Really? That's what you get from this post?

Working quite well here in Switzerland...

Came to write this. 100% agree.

Interesting how this thread reads when you replace "Microsoft" with "NASA" or "Pharma Companies" and "Windows" with "Globe Earth" or "Vaccines"...

At the time we start using a lot of it (enough to matter), we would also be capable to mine it from comets or moons.

The German localization of the website really needs some corrections.

Wow.
justin--sane··on My offer numbers from big companies
Bern, Switzerland here. I know plenty of people with families and sub-100k the are perfectly happy with their respective salary as well. I'd say it's a matter of personal spending habits what's an "ok" salary. After going back to uni, I'm also happy and ok with < 50k (of course this wouldn't be all that ok if I had kids rather than a cat).

> Not rich? Work smarter - you probably have a much better perspective on what the masses need / use than a rich person does. Convince a money man to invest in your ideas.

So how many people have the cognitive abilities or the educational background to 'work smarter"? Looking down from the ivory tower telling the factory worker or the sales assistant to "work smarter" to "get rich" is a nasty mix of ignorance and arrogance. For mosylt people the only option to keep their head above the water is to work harder.

> Rent is too high? Consider the chances your SV startup will make you a millionaire are near 0. You may want to live elsewhere.

Yeah, everyone can move whenever they want. Who cares about family, friends and maybe the job you like. The rent is higher now, so just move where you and people like you belong.

> Don't like your elected officials? Tough shit, 50% of the country does or doesn't.

Bullshit. While there are countries that run some perverted version of democracy, most developed countries are pretty good building governments with way higher approvals.

> Your boss or management sucks? Chances are they think you suck too. Find a new job you enjoy and are appreciated. Work culture is like dating and not everybody is compatible.

Yeah, with a job market like the current one you, the employee, have all the power. /s A LOT of people are happy to have a job and just quitting because their boss is a dick? Not gonna happen because not possible.

> Nature and the universe aren't fair. Don't expect anything to be given to you.

And that's why we give money to the elderly and disabled, make education accessible to everyone, have social welfare, pay doctor's bills for people who cannot afford it and try to counter ghettofication by subsidizing flats in more expensive areas. At least some countries do that, and guess what - those are the ones with the highest living standards for everyone.

This is extremely nice. "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information" and "Envisioning Information" are, IMHO, masterworks.
justin--sane··on Show HN: Labit – a network of laboratory pages for research groups
10, since it is policy here to use a subdomain of the university.

Of course, all data hosted on the lab website is usually not sensitive. But I know of a couple of unis where the policy is quite rigid and they simply do not allow any external hosting. Do you have any plans to allow self-hosting? It seems to work quite well for wordpress and ghost...

justin--sane··on Show HN: Labit – a network of laboratory pages for research groups
I would actually be interested to move our research groups website there. However, I'd first have to check with the Uni IT / security if it is allowed to host a website externally. This could be a general problem - did you look into University policies to see if this could be an often occuring issue?

You might as well say climate change is a myth. We're out of agricultural space. Everything that means decreasing yields is a bad idea. The population growths, however land does not - it might even shrink due to climate change. While the high food waste is usually named as THE problem, it is only part of it and a wasteless utopia is far, far away - and stopping waste in place A doesn't really help people in place B.

justin--sane··on Want to see Windows 10 through the eyes of a Mac user? Strap in.
But for pretty much all these things are, well, apps. Ever since I started using Visual Studio Code (also true for Atom etc) I don't care that much about the OS any more. Except for gaming, where there is really only Windows. The only OS-related problem that I currently have is, that I can't work on my VR side project on my Linux box at work. Oh and iOS development ...

What about the heavily increased land use in organic farming?

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959652617...

What about the pesticides used in organic farming? I'd jug some Roundup (LD50: 5,600 mg/kg in rats) before eating Copper sulfate (LD50: 30 mg/kg in rats) used in organic farming.

My main problem is, that the whole thing is just a big appeal to nature. More natural does not mean safer for consumption or better for the environment.
