justforasingle··on Fewer people are using Elon Musk's X, according to analysts
This is what I was referring to in regards to a signup: https://mastodon.social/auth/sign_up

By the way I would hardly characterise myself as being 'on a tilt' in my post, I simply stated that mastodon was x.com but for the other side. Perhaps you are on a tilt and anyone level-headed appears as tilted?

justforasingle··on Fewer people are using Elon Musk's X, according to analysts
I started an X account recently and the posts they put into my feed were the most intensely negative tweets and imagery I've ever seen interspersed with sports shit I also could not block. It didn't matter how many times I tried to block a certain kind of content another account posting the exact same thing would be in the feed. I didn't want to see basketball, Hitlerism, political tweets or Gaza gore yet that is all I was shown. I deactivated my account and checked out mastodon instead and the signup screen for that was blatantly censorious and would be like using twitter with annoying leftists instead. Where the hell do normal people hang out online to have a chat?

Imagining the kind of stuff swirling around the average twitter/mastodon users head is unreal. There must be radicalism beyond measure just beneath the surface ready to blow for every sort of group all across the world.

justforasingle··on ISIS claims responsibility for Moscow concert venue attack that killed least 60
Pretty interesting. Russia has a virtual 'open borders policy' with the central asian states recently.
justforasingle··on The Symbolism Found Within Ultima IV's Box Art
Seems more 'Moses-like' than 'Christ-like' to me.
justforasingle··on UC Berkeley community condemns EECS professor's misogynistic discussion post
Damn.. That guy in the linked images "anonymous giraffe" is 5'2 student with no job and no money. The image right before that is an Indian guy literally paying people $20 to be introduced to girls.
justforasingle··on Why did we wait so long for the bicycle? (2019)
I would consider treadmills known to exist as early as 4000BC as an early step towards bicycles. Commonly used for grinding wheat or moving water - possibly even cranes. There both gearing and leg power interact - just gotta apply the force to a set of four wheels and you're halfway there.
justforasingle··on Reddit Said to Price IPO at $34 a Share, in a Positive Sign for Tech
Any word from the 'Blackcat' group that said they would leak sensitive info at the IPO? They exfiltrated like 80gb of data a year or so ago.
justforasingle··on How to Start Google
Perhaps they shouldn't use esoteric abbreviations. YAADH.
justforasingle··on How to Start Google
What is YMMV?
justforasingle··on "Lots of people in CS are (almost surely) GPT-ing their peer reviews"
There are a lot of seething and butthurt replies to you for some reason. Imagine the above but in regards to any other piece of technology.

"I use calculators in all my calculations now, and I'm really transparent about it. For $20, I now have a pocket calculator, and can at any time whip it out and calculate a long, difficult problem - and get a correct calculation based on my inputs just a few seconds later. Is there a single reason not to use it?"

Are the concerns in the other replies consistent with their own outsourcing of willpower & mental effort to technology?

justforasingle··on Three Components of Social Order
Would be nice if he credited Rudolf Steiner, as that is clearly who he has taken the concept of the threefold social order from.
justforasingle··on F-35A officially certified to carry nuclear bomb
The B61 is 3.56m long. I had to wonder if the internal bomb bays could fit something like that and found a pic on reddit with it tucked in with quite a lot of room to spare.

justforasingle··on NASA Unveils Design for Message Heading to Jupiter's Moon Europa
I came here to post something similar. Look at the engraved art on the tantalum plate... It looks like mass produced etsy trash to be hung on the wall of an idiots home - like a sign saying LIVE. LAUGH. LOVE.
justforasingle··on Nikon to acquire RED
Pretty interesting. If you look on netflix approved camera list[0] there are none from Nikon. Personally I think RED cameras are overhyped and are a major reason most netflix shows all look and feel the same. I don't think its the colour grading or lenses - its something about the camera itself that just feels shit and doesn't give me the same access to a scene the same way something like sony's HDVS from 30 years ago does.[1]

justforasingle··on The propagation of error in classical geometry constructions (2018)
I bought a copy of TASCHEN's "The Elements of Euclid" with illustrations by Oliver Byrne from his book in 1847. As I was working through a lot of the later problems I could see myself causing these sorts of errors due to a skill issue. For example as I dragged the pencil vertically down a ruler the wooden side of the pencil (above the lead) rested on the ruler. As I dragged the pencil down my arm lowered and my wrist changed orientation so that the lead of the pencil was now resting against the ruler as I completed the line. It was honestly so frustrating to see the corners and arcs of my diagram look like abstract dog shit because I was too much of a dumbass to use a ruler correctly.
justforasingle··on [dead]
How does Jennifer know there were no other women in the room? She might be misgendering everybody in there.
justforasingle··on How computers entered the classroom, 1960–2000
I remember my primary school won a sun microsystems competition somewhere around the year 2000. We got our first computer lab set up with a few dozen PCs, and it was the only room in the school with air conditioning. That room was a god send in the Australian summer. Thank you sun microsystems.
justforasingle··on Microplastics found in every human placenta tested in study
I always personally thought the principal source of microplastics was polyester (polyethylene terephthalate). I most often see it linked to plastic bags and containers instead. I'm half way to replacing all my clothes with organic fibres - seeing the mass of polyester in my dryers filter every week was starting to spook me out and the airborne 'dust' blowing off it when removed reminded me of asbestos.
justforasingle··on Power Metal: is it really about dragons? (2018)
I found power metal because I was looking for a more positive sub-genre of metal. What I was listening to before often had ahrimanic themes - death, violence, satanism etc.
justforasingle··on Show HN: Refractify – Optical software against myopia
fabulous placebo, got it!
justforasingle··on Show HN: Refractify – Optical software against myopia
I don't know what that means - All I have are my own anecdotes and others.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=endmyopia+resul...

I personally went from -3.0 diopters to almost 20/20 vision. So either I'm experiencing a fabulous placebo or the 'known mechanisms' aren't as comprehensive as we've been led to believe.

justforasingle··on Show HN: Refractify – Optical software against myopia
A deeper look into this shows that the owner of the site (Jake Steiner) is very controlling, and hides advice and information behind paywalls. I recommend reducedlens.org over endmyopia.org for this reason.
justforasingle··on Show HN: Refractify – Optical software against myopia

Its about controlled axial length changes to the eyeball with differing methods.

justforasingle··on Sweeping chronic fatigue study brings clues, not clarity to mysterious syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome seems like a rebrand for ye olde neurasthenia. I have to wonder why 'hysteria' didn't get the PR treatment considering it is the other pole of neurasthenia. It really is the same sort of collection of symptoms under a large umbrella.

Neurasthenia was considered to be a result of lower processes (intake and transformation of food) becoming too demanding for the upper processes (respiration). The upper organisation was thought to be reaching its conclusion before it fully balanced nourishment with respiration. Excessive independence of the metabolic processes from the upper organisation of respiration were thought to bring about ‘hysteria’ - neurasthenia's polar opposite.

Please don't downvote because I don't mean this post as a snarky jab or justification of pseudo-science - I just have to wonder why if you're going to have such an encompassing definition of something like CFS, why would you then dig around in the mud of cellular automata instead of looking at overarching qualities as some did in the late 19th century? It seems to me that you either need to confront the definition or work on the same level as it.

justforasingle··on YouTube's search function is atrocious now [video]
That is a good tip. Many people doing this will run into another silent youtube change, which is higher resolution options for older videos are completely removed. Some videos I have in my saved playlists marked 'HD 1080p' now only have a maximum resolution of 240p. Very sad.
