justathrow2k··on Fake girlfriend, revisited
Sorry, what is it you're saying?
justathrow2k··on I was falsely arrested
So, I hope I'm using this term correctly, but it seems like you're building a straw man here. I certainly never made the claim that everyone has the same experience and outlook regardless of race. However, as I mentioned in another one of my replies, making a blanket statement that 'black people have no alternative to understanding how the world really works.', reeks of racism to me. In this day and age, people are born into many diverse situations, regardless of shared racial makeup.
justathrow2k··on I was falsely arrested
I would agree, that's not racism. However, I would say that a blanket statement about all members of a race such as this, 'black people have no alternative to understanding how the world really works.', is.
justathrow2k··on I was falsely arrested
This is an incredibly racist way to look at the issue.
justathrow2k··on YouTube Red is live
If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense.
justathrow2k··on The Thirty-Seven Basic Plots, According to a Screenwriter of the Silent Film Era
I think you could describe Groundhog Day as the sum of a few of those plots listed.
justathrow2k··on Why I Left the .NET Framework (2013)
>The .NET dev sitting across from me doesn't even use legit source control.

Well, there you have it, this guy knows a .NET dev who doesn't use legit version control, so the whole .NET stack is a joke. QED.

If we define the metrics by which we judge quality, then possibly yes, possibly no.
justathrow2k··on How Playing the Long Game Made Elizabeth Holmes a Billionaire
Shrug. Its totally possible the old wealth is gone, its totally possible its not. I should state, I don't think any less of this persons and their accomplishments. Just a bit of a nitpick on details.
justathrow2k··on How Playing the Long Game Made Elizabeth Holmes a Billionaire
Sure, but money and the connections derived from it certainly helps you get to that point.
justathrow2k··on How Playing the Long Game Made Elizabeth Holmes a Billionaire
Sure, but so what?

'One of her ancestors was a founder of the Fleischmann's Yeast company', and her great-great-grandfather was 'dean of University of Cincinnati College of Medicine,[11] where a hospital is named after him.'

justathrow2k··on How Playing the Long Game Made Elizabeth Holmes a Billionaire
Did you consider you're putting the horse before the cart? I mean to say....did you consider she has these connections because she comes from money? Sometimes they come hand in hand.
justathrow2k··on How Playing the Long Game Made Elizabeth Holmes a Billionaire
What precisely in the Wikipedia article you linked to made you suspect that her parents aren't rich? I saw, 'One of her ancestors was a founder of the Fleischmann's Yeast company', and immediately thought old money.
justathrow2k··on For Silicon Valley Hopefuls, Is College Irrelevant?
That's a bit presumption of you, perhaps all they wanted to be was someone who does 'webdev scut work'.
justathrow2k··on For Silicon Valley Hopefuls, Is College Irrelevant?
Fair enough, but I don't see how any of this has to do with the topic at hand, which was boot camps are for suckers. I wouldn't consider the junior developers who are working out well in the parents reply suckers - sounds like they're employed and working out well.
justathrow2k··on For Silicon Valley Hopefuls, Is College Irrelevant?
Really? I feel like lots of people know how to get a programming job with a CS degree, and you in fact hit the nail on the head in your response, learn the technologies that employers are going to want you to have. Experiences to learn these things aren't very difficult to find, imho.
justathrow2k··on For Silicon Valley Hopefuls, Is College Irrelevant?
Out of curiosity, why do you ask if they are web developers?
justathrow2k··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk – they come from families with money
For sure. Why you're getting my response, and others like it, is because well, this is a tech circle and we're talking about tech jobs, so in this context, it's certainly nowhere close to being a school no one has heard of.

edit: Your original comment (paraphrased) was, 'I go to this school no one's heard of, but my classmate get offers to <top-tier tech companies>', but the reality of this is that all of these top-tier tech companies are without a doubt quite aware of Waterloo and it's quality. The same can't be said for, what, I don't know, Cleveland State University.

justathrow2k··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk – they come from families with money
Children of rich parents come in all shapes, sizes, and colours, friend.
justathrow2k··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk – they come from families with money
You do realize that Waterloo has a CS program that's highly regarded (internationally), yes?
justathrow2k··on Joining a Different YC
You must have a very loose definition of help, too, if you consider renting your property for profit as act of help as opposed to a self serving act with the aim being lining ones pockets.
justathrow2k··on Joining a Different YC
It makes me question, however, what is Air BnB's 'social impact'? Providing an easier gateway for people to engage in illegal renting?
justathrow2k··on Things to Know When Making a Web Application in 2015
Yeah, yeah, I think I would. Someone's credibility as a programmer isn't destroyed in my mind because they say encrypt to describe hashing, especially if they are in fact, hashing and not encrypting and understand why.

This is something I've seen a lot of developers act elitist about, and it's always rubbed me the wrong way.

justathrow2k··on Ask HN: When did Firefox become so broken?
Isn't this question better suited for a FireFox dev/complaint forum?
justathrow2k··on Movie studio takeover
This seems all sorts of shades of unethical.

justathrow2k··on Take me as an Intern – 19yo student seeking internship
For what its worth, I agree with you. That is to say, I feel like a lot of the people here giving out praise are being a bit excessive with it and this is simply a flavour of the day paint by numbers web page. Still, it's a good effort for a kid in college looking to get an internship.
justathrow2k··on Take me as an Intern – 19yo student seeking internship
A design like that coupled with a product that people think has some value, perhaps.
justathrow2k··on Take me as an Intern – 19yo student seeking internship
These companies products generally aren't simply a website - their web sites serve as a catalyst for delivering an actual product that provides functionality. The link is question isn't a product hosted on the web, its simply a personal website.
justathrow2k··on That Way We’re All Writing Now
I agree with the example of the macro usage of thy->thee->you/your as being an instance of progression, but I don't see the current trends in internet slang as a parallel example of something that will have such a long lasting effect on our language as a whole, but instead, well, just what I said, I see it as a trend that will eventually be a ghost. This is a prediction, of course.
