justanorherhack··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
He is likely citing birth rates are less than death rates in most of the developed world. There is a bit of a lag effect in pop count because boomers and extensions of end of life. Japan is at the forefront of this and has more elderly in diapers than children. Another aside that's Interesting is their societys professional landscape is very ageist against youth. I don't know anything about how immigration impacts things.
justanorherhack··on Crab crisis in Bering Sea a sign of ‘borealization’
"And the oil drilling project itself (the capital, labor, materials, etc) is definitely a waste of human effort -- no doubt about that."

No doubt huh?

justanorherhack··on Facial recognition tech gets woman booted from Rockettes show due to employer
Yes and if enough people actually thought about it and cared then they wouldnt participate and the market would change. But instead just like with regulation they don't care. It's just one is forced and one is a choice.
justanorherhack··on ‘Two years of lost immigration’ is responsible for half of missing workforce
Yea and there are Americans that want those jobs to keep the lights on and get paid over 6 figures.
justanorherhack··on ‘Two years of lost immigration’ is responsible for half of missing workforce
This is the root issue and it's systemic wage suppression. It's also surreal when entire management structures are h1b1 visa workers and speaks to deeper cultural issues that nobody wants to talk about.
justanorherhack··on CS quotes found while browsing Notepad++'s code
Good for you, but I think it reflects more poorly on your maturity that you think some funny comments on a solo project reflect the maturity level of an author so negatively or that that even matters. How many solo projects have you made with millions of users translated in 80+ languages? Given your assertion, maturity is not required for success. The author has made political statements with his work and clearly takes a more artistic approach.
justanorherhack··on Ask HN: Am I getting older or did typing on the iPhone become unbearable?
Ill as in sick?

Most of which is the result of policy.
justanorherhack··on Improving Firefox Responsiveness on macOS
Would really love to switch. But Firefoxs extension management is unusable in my opinion. Can't quickly turn on/off extensions.
justanorherhack··on Which language to choose? Wanna develop an IoT solution
Go. I’m an consultant and have a golang iot platform that does ingest transforms rules alarms. We have 10k devices and use Scylla and it just works.
justanorherhack··on Why “go nuts, show nuts” doesn’t work in 2022
Can’t have cake and eat it too. I think the order in which these have occurred speaks to the regulators priorities.
justanorherhack··on Google postpones MV2 shutoff in Chrome stable to June 2023
The extension management ui is terrible in Firefox and I haven’t been able to figure out how to disable or manage many multiple extensions.
justanorherhack··on A CTO should be technical
Maybe you should interview and find out why people do this. I have been coding for 10 years professionally, started coding in middle school and high school competitively. I live and breathe tech because I love it. Yet to work at all the nice companies I have to be able to identify an a problem pattern and implement an ‘optimal’ algorithm twice in an hour or it doesn’t matter.

Also what constitutes an awesome GitHub? Because unless you run a project with > 100 stars it’s little more than academic and doesn’t matter.

justanorherhack··on Censorship by big tech at the behest of the U.S. government?
This.

As an under the age of 30 person, Covid is a small threat. But asking questions about a government mandated vaccine that was rushed through testing in an unprecedented manner labels you a loony. Questions like who is going to be liable for the inevitable even if small bad reactions? Not big pharma, they were absolved in the contract of all liability. If they were so confident and if this is so safe that I don’t have to worry about it as a citizen why did the lawyers ensure that they wouldn’t be liable?

What about the precedence of liberty this sets? In a series of weeks the government removed nearly all agency overnight and everyone complied. There was no real debate on pros and cons of the total lockdown.

The ineffectiveness of masks other than n95 when changed out daily. Which nobody had.

I have friends that still won’t consider the vanity fair article or lab leak theory as anything other than conspiracy.

Oh yea and the ever falling efficacy of the vaccine itself.

But let’s check cress to make sure I’m a dr.

justanorherhack··on I assure you, medieval people bathed (2019)
If it was a cultural value to feed people outside of the home before yourself and food donation was a cultural promoted ideology then that means there were lots of people to feed..
justanorherhack··on We're improving search results when you use quotes
As said in other comments this is great but I wish they would get lower some of the search stealers like Pinterest, redbubble, yelp, and LinkedIn. There also a lot of top x sites that are practically generated and thinks like user benchmark that are complete garbage.
justanorherhack··on GraphQL is quickly moving to one of my least favorite technologies
The ready made servers often don’t handle authorization well or at all. Prisma is just an orm. This reads like somebody who hasn’t built a lot of prod stuff.
justanorherhack··on Why the Windows Registry sucks technically (2010)
Very dismissive take. How many billions of dollars in man hours have registry errors created with the only solution often being to reinstall windows.
justanorherhack··on Rumor: Google Stadia May Be Getting Shut Down
His point is highlighting that even if you pay for it you don’t actually own the game. In this weird market you only own the game if you pirate it.

Ip laws are the worst and terrible for the market. Especially the media companies that just recharge you for for the same content just to watch it on a different medium.

justanorherhack··on Ex-CIA coder behind WikiLeaks ‘Vault 7’ cache found guilty of espionage
Wikileaks was leaking before vox had any readers to shill

Most of their leaks are bipartisan

justanorherhack··on Browser Extension to Bypass Media Sites Paywalls
Huh I was annoyed when I went to open a ticket rexently and the original repo was locked..
justanorherhack··on Why I Don't Like Golang (2016)
IMO it’ll be slower to write crud apis and there are some missing batteries you have to look for, it’s fairly verbose but I think some of that will change with generics and hopefully more pattern matching.

On the flip side when you deploy it, it will like just work and run smoothly. Also very easy to add full integration tests as you can create a mock http server at runtime, paired with some db tools (go migrate) it’s very easy spin up a whole env and test it. It’s also very easy to get at lower level things like headers and cookies without it getting in the way. Also much of the web middleware is interchangeable or a few lines away from an adapter as there is a common interface in the std lib.

justanorherhack··on Why I Don't Like Golang (2016)
In 5 years of writing to code this has never prevented me from naming a file what I wanted to name it. I enforced conventions are nice, when I need to look at what’s different between platforms I can very quickly do so in any large repo.
justanorherhack··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
Lots of other countries have firearms and don’t have school shootings. Switzerland and Israel come to mind.
justanorherhack··on The Science of Interviewing Developers
Is it me or is stack overflow watering itself down to be more appealing to a wider audience. Which will cost it’s actual audience..
justanorherhack··on The Constitutionality of Civil Forfeiture (2016)
The reason it’s wrong is the post is written as if slavery and all it’s sins fall on America, that America wouldn’t exist today without this ideal and that a great correction is due. All of the ‘developed’ world at the time were slave owners. Also slavery was not new it’s as old as time and every civilization had it’s own version of it. It wasn’t white supremacy as in we are doing this because we are better its class warfare asserting power over one group, the conquerors and the conquered. Was that group dehumanized? Yes but many of the founders wrote and stood against it and didn’t view them as subhuman. Pretty sure one of them freed and married a slave. The 3/5ths compromise at the time was a compromise to have slaves considered as people with rights to vote while other states didn’t like that because it meant they were people. But it was a great compromise just like the civil war, if the idea of slavery and white supremacy ie man is not created equal was so rooted then why was there decades of conflict over it…
justanorherhack··on NSA Swears It Won't Allow Backdoors in New Encryption Standards;)
From the article: “In 2013, it was reported that the NSA had paid $10 million to the security company RSA, in exchange for which, RSA allegedly implanted a compromised encryption algorithm into its products’ software called Dual_EC_DRBG. This algorithm is widely believed to have acted as a backdoor for the NSA. In 2014, it was reported that the NSA had been intercepting U.S.-made hardware that was being sent abroad. NSA operatives would allegedly implant the products with backdoors, repackage them, then send them on their way. In 2015, networking products manufacturer Juniper Networks announced that a suspected backdoor had been discovered inside the operating system that runs its firewalls. The NSA is long suspected of having been involved or having been inadvertently responsible for security weaknesses that allowed hackers to get inside the devices. In 2020, Congress tried to get a straight answer out of the NSA as to whether it was still planting backdoors in U.S.-made hardware and software. Then NSA staffer Anne Neuberger said: “We don’t share specific processes and procedures.” In February, it was reported that a backdoor affecting most Linux distributions had been discovered. The backdoor, dubbed “Bvp47,” was reportedly “linked” to the Equation Group, a well-known hacking group inside the NSA.”

There has been a constant barrage in congress against cryptography and hard encryption. They have lowered the standard algorithms used for things like Wi-Fi in the past.
