just_testing··on .NET 8
Thank you!! Good to know.

I teach for a living, mostly people of poor backgrounds, and a lot of them in the Third World. I understand your argument (and I buy some tools myself), but I can't tell them to use paid tools because the cost may be too high in the local currency and it adds up fast.

I really want to have that experience everywhere, including nose.js and the browser. It is so simple and intuitive

I interpret that as Minsky being... an unpleasurable person, to say the least.
just_testing··on Ask HN: When did 7 interviews become “normal”?
FINALLY someone on this thread that understands politics and freaking understands that human beings are not spherical and frictionless.

I know way too many stories of racist cops in Europe to believe talking to police doesn't get you in trouble in Europe also.

P.S.: I do have european citizenship. Also, dark skin.

just_testing··on David Graeber has died
Glad you shared this anecdote. I've only had contact with him online and it's good to see he was such a great person IRL.
just_testing··on Ask HN: Mind bending books to read and never be the same as before?
"Debt" and "bullshit jobs", both by David Graeber.

The first book really tears apart several of the "foundations" of economics. For instance, the creation of money as portrayed by Adam Smith? It's a myth, and no single place like he described ever existed.

Bullshit jobs is about the myriad bullshit managerial jobs we have and how we really shouldn't have them. It's capitalism, it's supposed to be efficient and yet, when he published a piece about bullshit jobs in an obscure anarchist magazine in 2013, it made so much impact The Economist wrote a response!

I am replying here with some constructive criticism, because I found it awesome. As far as I can tell, TileDB is like a better SQLite and better Parquet, is that it?

The webpage does not tell me exactly what TileDB is, so I'm having a hard time getting understanding what's underneath all the marketing mumbo-jumbo.

But if it is indeed a better SQLite/Parquet, DAMN, I'm so going to spread the gospel of this to all my students.

just_testing··on The ReMarkable Tablet: A Review
How does this compare to a kobo libra? I have one Kobo Libra, use it for PDFs, as the screen has enough DPI and is big enough, but it's not the best experience.

Absolutely love the Pocket integration and KOReader, though. Also, the lights.

just_testing··on A Lengthy, Pedantic Review of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver)
A Local Bike Shop without any huge internet operation? They aren't exactly the target for most high-profile linux rootkits.
just_testing··on A Lengthy, Pedantic Review of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver)
At first, it wasn't.

Buuut so many great bikes (and I ride to work every single day) and it was hard to accept the money.

I joke to people telling I am an addicted doing work for the drug dealer - of course I would receive in drugs, not money!

just_testing··on A Lengthy, Pedantic Review of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver)
Yesterday, I finished converting a bike shop to Ubuntu Linux only.

They are ridiculously happy because: - device drivers actually work - they don't have to worry anymore about viruses - they can use old machines without trouble

So yeah, zero customization - but a way better experience than Windows.

So, your crowd not only exists, but got me a new bicycle!

just_testing··on Google maps shows location of San Bruno shooting
This is one of those statistics where there are only two distinct values that matter:

- Zero shootings - Too many shootings

Any number bigger than zero is too much and we should do our best as a society to decrease it to zero.

just_testing··on Ask HN: Benefits of front-end JavaScript frameworks?
Look, you're kinda confusing things.

For instance, I work in a lot of projects with Django on the backend and Angular or React on the frontend.

The gist of all that stuff is: REDUCING COMPLEXITY. Tying your hands, so you can free your mind.

As Django and Rails are a way to better organize stuff on the backend, so are those frameworks a way to organize stuff on the frontend.

For instance, take React+Redux or Vue+Vuex: you bind all the transformations on your UI to a single object. All stuff that happens on the UI is a consequence of a transformation on that object.

So: 1) You just gained undo/redo, if you track alterations on your object. 2) You know the state of your application at all times, just looking at the object. You can also keep it and save it for later use.

Now, compare that to something you would do on jQuery. It is a great tool, but it wasn't built with that complexity in mind. So pretty soon you're dealing with actions happening in 5 different places. It gets way harder to wrap your head around it.

FREELANCE - São Paulo, Brazil

  Location: São Paulo, Brazil
  Rate: USD 50/hour

What the hell I am: Software Engineer by Day, Data Scientist by night
What I bring to the table: More than 10 years of programming (mostly web frontend/backend and GIS), developing products now used by thousands of people. For three years, I began to branch into data products for NGOs, in which I made:
  - The biggest crawl of land properties in São Paulo
  - Finding out more than US$ 2.7 billion of property in São Paulo owned by offshores (for Transparency International, report here: https://www.transparency.org/news/feature/us2.7_billion_of_saeo_paulo_brazil_property_linked_to_offshore_companies)
  - Making the biggest transit fines map in the country, geocoding over 13 million badly written addresses (had to create my own geocoder for that).
I love doing data products like those, and want to do more of those. I have a fancy CV here: http://tiagofassoni.github.io/fancy-resume Email: tiagofassoni@gmail.com

just_testing··on Snips Uses Rust to Build an Embedded Voice Assistant
amazing! Do you have any timelines for portuguese? (And, quite specifically, brazilian portuguese?)

Thanks!

just_testing··on OpenStreetMap Is in Trouble
I'm also interested in the development of OSM (being an editor and a data consumer) and I've witnessed first hand some of your issues. For instance, once I've had to create my own "geocoder" for transit fines in São Paulo using OSM data, because no geocoder commercially available would be able to deal with the data.

So, now that we clarified I'm not a troll, nor a bot, I ask you: how should we deal with those issues? Join en masse the OSMF so we can vote for a change? Begin the "New-OSM-But-Better Foundation"?

I also think having layers (particularly, layers vouched by governments) would be awesome. I saw several governmental branches in Brazil wanting to be more integrated with OSM - this would allow them to stay "inside" OSM (and being an accredited citizen), instead of creating their own silos, importing data from time to time.

Just dropping by to thank you guys. This extension will be amazingly useful to me.

One question for the good fellas at Sourcegraph: Is it possible to run that extension in firefox? Did you try something like that? Is the code open, so I could give it a go?

Recent work includes:

- Crawlers for opening public datasets in Brazil

- Website for searching Freedom of Information Act requests in São Paulo

- Website for public consultation on locations for semaphores for blind people.

- A website (http://cappuccino.works) on Data Analysis using Open Data (and releasing all the code used as opensource), so independent journalists in Brazil could do data-based reporting on important issues. So far, the plan is working, I've worked with several news venues in Brazil and even international NGOs, such as Transparency International.
