just-ok··on Facebook staff now to be known as “Metamates”
It’s completely wireless and requires no additional hardware (neither extra sensors nor a $1500 PC). That’s leaps and bounds beyond the first-gen Vive.
just-ok··on More than 1M fewer students are in college, the lowest numbers in 50 years
You can’t say “most state schools” and then cite UCLA, which is one of the top public universities in the world.
just-ok··on Counterfactual Theory of Value
Heh, this is kinda fun.

Another follow-up question, then: How did you manage to spend 50 hours making it? Did you sit there, painstakingly, making one leg thinner than the rest for some reason? Did you sleep? Did you spend 20 hours of it browsing HN? In either case, this would likely fall under the category of unproductive labor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Productive_and_unproductive_la...

There's also the distinction of "socially-necessary labor", which feels (to me) like Marx's parallel to subjective value - the more socially-necessary, the more valuable the labor (a nice table vs. a crappy one).

In any case, the value is not just a measure of "hours put in" as you're making it out to be here; clearly I put more labor into it than you if mine looks/performs better in the same amount of time.

just-ok··on Counterfactual Theory of Value
Not exactly, because the master woodworker’s prior labor to gain that experience would factor into the value assessment.
just-ok··on Debit cards are hidden financial infrastructure
One of the biggest wins from credit cards (imo, of course) is reward programs. Getting a 1-3% discount on purchases is pretty nice (plus, obviously, fraud protection, etc.). However, some issuers are using crypto to claw back at this perk; for example, the Coinbase debit card can give you 4% back.
just-ok··on Debit cards are hidden financial infrastructure
How does this change with a debit card?

just-ok··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
> Even now we don’t know if they’re necessarily harmful.

Micro-plastics are definitely harmful, e.g. they’ve been associated with lower fertility [1,2]. We’re actively engineering our own extinction.

just-ok··on How do I opt my access point out of Google Location services?
Except they are: Google undoubtedly uses the set of WiFi networks near you for location-based tracking on Android, even if your GPS is off.
just-ok··on It's virtually impossible to read old iMessages and they take up tons of storage
Hm, yet I have no problem searching phrases that go back at least five years.. I would say the burden of proof is on the author here to extract the database from the phone and prove that the messages didn’t get deleted, lost in an upgrade, or otherwise cleaned up.
just-ok··on It's virtually impossible to read old iMessages and they take up tons of storage
If you can remember a term, any term, that was written in the message, you can search & jump to it directly. For my girlfriend and I, it was the bar we went to on our first date. This feature only gives you small subsets (a couple dozen, maybe) messages near the query result, but then you can just search for the last message again and get the next “page,” so to speak. Of course, remembering such a term is hard, which is what I assume you mean by “search for old messages is unreliable,” but it’s at least a possible workaround.

just-ok··on No safe level of alcohol for brain health: observational cohort study [pdf]
But you just defined what a "standard drink" is, no? All of those values are supposed to be equal:

5oz of wine * 12% = 1.5oz of spirits * 40% = 12oz of beer * 5%

so I'm still confused...

Edit: Wait, do you mean the size of a full glass? That's... an odd way to measure things.

just-ok··on No safe level of alcohol for brain health: observational cohort study [pdf]
> Glasses were converted to UK units as follows: red or white wine = 1.7 units; fortified wine=1.2 units; pint = 2.4 units; spirits = 1 unit; other (e.g. alcopops) = 1.2 units. Amounts were also converted to grams pure ethanol (1 UK unit=8g) to aid international comprehension and comparison.

Can someone explain these numbers to me? They claim to measure one “standard drink” (all of which are equal), yet each variant is a different number of units? Furthermore, wine is more (stronger?) than spirits? I must be missing something.

You’re right: “meaningless” was a heavy-handed attempt at continuing the parallel on my part. And sure, they weren’t doing anything wrong, but they fundamentally were wrong in the rules they followed previously. Similarly, if you adjust a principle, you admit that it didn’t hold for you in the first place.

As a tangent: while the parallel to scientific theories is good on the surface, it does lump in this idea that there’s a universal set of correct principles. Isn’t that just philosophy, then? Logical arguments about which principles are sound & universal. Maybe the lesson is to pick principles from the battle-tested ones rather than trying to develop your own.

just-ok··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
I’m sure plenty of people would agree to an absolute “I don’t steal” principle—one that covers a pretty significant number of conditions & circumstances-and yet not go back to the register when they accidentally walked out of the grocery store with something, or compromise it more significantly under stress of hunger. In this case, one could argue “I don’t steal” was never a principle they actually held.
just-ok··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
I think your loose definition of “principle” does not meet many others’: it’s definitely intended to be stricter than a heuristic.

Of course even though you can have relaxed principles, e.g. “I usually don’t lie” vs. “I don’t lie,” I think the point here is that if you believe or preach a particular “principle,” but then adjust it for yourself when it’s convenient (for example a “just this once” scenario), it was never a principle to begin with.

just-ok··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
In the same way that a scientific theory was meaningless if it failed a test, a principle was meaningless if it needed to be adjusted when actually put to use.

I hear this all the time, but you’re sooo unlikely to be important enough for this to actually matter. And even if it did happen, the attacker would still need your password (and sometimes your phone number) first.

just-ok··on Oatly: The New Coke
Oat milk is great for vegans or lactose-intolerant people and froths way better than the other non-dairy milks, so I'm not sure where the oat milk => Starbucks jab comes from. Either way, my local coffee shops started carrying oat milk much earlier than Starbucks.
just-ok··on Apple Introduces AirTag
Can you share how you did that? I've been trying to achieve that for both Bluetooth and Location Services (mini-rant: not adding a CC toggle for that is such a dark pattern) but haven't been able to pull it off.
just-ok··on Apple Introduces AirTag
Eh, losing your sense of direction due to the crutch of GPS isn’t adaptation; it’s regression. Not all of us are okay with being screwed if the convenient floor of modern life fell out from underneath us. :)
just-ok··on Apple Introduces AirTag
Yeah I’m surprised more people aren’t mentioning this: I’m really not a fan of being an involuntary participant in Apple’s mesh network.

I guess I could monitor my Bluetooth status more often, but the Control Center toggle (intentionally) doesn’t turn it off entirely...
