jurassicfoxy··on Proposed Oklahoma skyscraper gets redesign to become USA's new tallest building
Haha, I had a good chuckle at the rendering with all the ads. The brew pub especially.
jurassicfoxy··on Show HN: Checkmate Champ – a training tool for chess tactics
I love curated checkmate training, and I would disagree with the other posters. I would in fact recommend you don't make the training "random", but keep them in line with the book. Presumably, like Polgar Mates, there's a sequence to it.

The main thing I'd recommend is having illegal moves do nothing, and make drag and drop more clear. The "floating ghost piece" is actually not the cursor, and that's kinda not very nice UX. You might try a "click to place" technique instead of drag & drop.

Is this book out of copyright now?

jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: Is the job market dead or something?
We had an intern (who was great) who has struggled to find work for almost a year now, going by LinkedIn. Awful. And if he can't get a job, I can't imagine how most young devs feel these days.
jurassicfoxy··on Greenland startup begins shipping glacier ice to cocktail bars in the UAE
I love it. The ultimate in trickle-down economics. Sell renewable products at insane markups to rich idiots.
jurassicfoxy··on Changes we're making to Google Assistant
I definitely exist in a bubble, but it's especially useful while driving. Or for searches "Hey Siri, what is the capital of Zambia?" is faster than typing it, and you don't even need to reach for your phone. (Of course Siri is awful and can barely do basic things.)

We use it quite a lot.

jurassicfoxy··on Wind turbines are friendlier to birds than oil-and-gas drilling
I didn't realize how stupid of an argument this was until my girlfriend pointed out how every single highway/landscape/street is absolutely covered in powerlines. The very few wind turbines are beautiful in comparison to what you see all over the continent, every day.
jurassicfoxy··on Why does holding a key fob to your head increase its range?
It's really funny when people don't believe it though. At first glance it looks like such an obvious "you're a gullible idiot" hoax, haha.
jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: What books do you want to read over again?
The Children's Hospital, by Chris Adrian. So great!

https://store.mcsweeneys.net/products/the-childrens-hospital

I've also read A Prayer For Owen Meany (John Irving) more than once.

jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
I think it's hilarious that anyone smart & hardworking enough to build a tool this neat would bother cheating on an exam in the first place, haha.
jurassicfoxy··on Anti-aging drug for dogs moves closer to gaining FDA approval
I'm paying something like $100 CAD per month, I think? Dog is 33 kg.
jurassicfoxy··on Anti-aging drug for dogs moves closer to gaining FDA approval
My understanding of Librela is that it specifically targets arthritis pain. I don't think it has anything to do with the breed, but more about what kind of pain they are in. My bigger, older dog did much better on it, but not as well as my dog with elbow dysplasia, who basically was made brand new again.

The other comments imply the same; it will depend a bit on the dog's condition. That being said, I still stand by my miracle drug assertion. And seemingly side-effect free.

jurassicfoxy··on Anti-aging drug for dogs moves closer to gaining FDA approval
In addition, if anyone has an older dog, they should also immediately look into Librela: https://www.zoetisus.com/products/dogs/librela/

This is a miracle drug that pretty much instantly changed both my (older) dogs' lives. Every vet tech I've spoken to (it's a monthly injection) agrees it is amazing.

jurassicfoxy··on New calf brings new hope, and new concerns, for embattled Sumatran rhinos
There is no hope, to be honest. I think we should start taking bets on total taxonomic loss for this extinction event. I think we can beat the Triassic at 83 %. Go humans!
jurassicfoxy··on Scientists battling orcas sinking yachts tackle problem with heavy metal music
Imagine being a scientist on the wrong side of the orca wars. Spend your time figuring out how save nature, instead.
jurassicfoxy··on Waze will now warn drivers about crash dangers using historical data
Typically I'm only worried about police during highway driving, so I don't actually mind the phone usage that much. You make a point: it's not the greatest & safest, but Waze has a much better UI than Google Maps for this, so it's very quick.
jurassicfoxy··on Waze will now warn drivers about crash dangers using historical data
Waze is really good. No comment on the accuracy of the directions, but I loved the crowdsourcing, and the warnings were the best of any of Apple, Google, & Waze. Loved the very accurate "police ahead" warnings.

Like most of you I'm sure (beating a dead horse here) I really wish they hadn't been bought out by Google.

jurassicfoxy··on It shouldn't matter if people work multiple jobs. -Former VP of HR at Microsoft
Exactly. HR employees are the most untrustworthy folks in any organization, short of the executives that direct them.
jurassicfoxy··on 53% of U.S. dog owners hesitant about the rabies vaccine
When I asked my vet about the efficacy of Lyme disease vaccine (which I'd read was mostly pointless, more risky, and not-long-lasting) I felt like a total anti-vaxxer.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2870557/

He wasn't the greatest vet, but I don't think he'd ever even considered the possibility that a vaccine wasn't simply the best (only) option.

Not an anti-vaxxer, but with the world of knowledge at our fingertips, we shouldn't necessarily hate people for wanting to "do their own research", despite how poorly they do it.

jurassicfoxy··on Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It
I actually felt that way as well (and I have dogs, not kids). I felt like 2 days a week in the office was like a mini-vacation from home. Other than the commute (which negated most of the benefit) getting out of the house felt like socializing.
jurassicfoxy··on New JWST results show we’re on a path to finding alien life
I found https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/2023/webb-discovers-methane-car...

which says that K2-18b is 120 light years away, in the Leo constellation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_(constellation)

Also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K2-18b

jurassicfoxy··on Insomnia REST client now requires an account
I was really disappointed with the Rapid API buyout, but anyway, the client for Mac seems essentially unchanged, is the good news.

The weird thing is that I can find NO mention of the client on their site: https://rapidapi.com/products/build-apis/

Which, to me, is a bad sign. I suspect someday I'll be forced to give it up.

jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: Is 36 too old to (re)start a career in tech?
Man, 36 is young. I'm a self-taught programmer who started as an engineer, and although that obviously gave me a huge leg up, I started at the bottom as a Junior dev. I was about your age when I took my first coding interview.

The harsh truth is actually that you could do a computer science undergrad, complete a master's degree, and start a PhD, and still be younger than I am now!

jurassicfoxy··on Lichess: Block Ads and Trackers
Lichess is truly amazing.

I am a monthly Lichess donator, and you too can donate via https://lichess.org/patron

jurassicfoxy··on Boarding a plane is a nightmare. Here’s how we got here
I would tend to agree with you. Of all the horrible aspects of airplane travel, boarding is definitely not the worst. Just sit patiently until last call then saunter on. Staying calm and patient is the hard part, of course.
jurassicfoxy··on The Evolution of Vi and Vim
Great article, thanks for sharing.

I love Vim, and although my usage is totally vanilla these days, I use Vim plugin for VSCode which is awesome (lack of :norm is the only downside I've found).

Vimium for Firefox is also a must-have https://addons.mozilla.org/en-CA/firefox/addon/vimium-ff/

jurassicfoxy··on ‘Friends’ and ‘Seinfeld’ knew the cure for loneliness
I don't know about Manhattan, but I can tell you in my small hometown, you can walk down to the pub any night and you'll meet up with some friends randomly, no planning required. It's actually amazing.

Of course this is much more difficult in large cities, but it's something to work towards, and is clearly possible.

jurassicfoxy··on Ancient Earth globe
For some reason this makes me feel depressed. I guess it is the lack of functional time machine combined with the on-going Holocene extinction.
jurassicfoxy··on Rain Panels: Harvesting the energy of falling raindrops
Not in the PNW!

> A tourist arrives in Vancouver on a rainy day. He gets up the next morning and it's still raining. In fact, it's still raining three days later. He goes out to supper and spies a young kid. Out of despair, he asks, "Hey kid, does it ever stop raining around here?!" The kid says, "How should I know, mister? I'm only six."

jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to the “coming wave” of delivery drones?
My friend had coffee delivered via drone (Canberra, Australia) and it was pretty fun. Certainly feels less wasteful (energetically) than a car & driver. The massive drone was pretty cool, too. That being said, Canberra is probably the perfect city for a drone delivery service, with so much open space.
jurassicfoxy··on Programmatic SEO
It's shocking how angry this article makes me. In an era of scummy ad-tech, decreasing search result quality, and explosion of crappy web content, I'd be embarrassed to publish this.
