jurassicfoxy··on 'My eyes hurt' searches spike on Google following solar eclipse
A little evolutionary pressure can't be a bad thing, right?
jurassicfoxy··on Paying off people's medical debt has little impact on their lives, study finds
But what value is credit score, really? Like, the most mundane thing credit score might affect is that you have to put a deposit down to get a fancy phone, or an internet service.

No one's buying houses, no one needs to buy a car on credit, etc. Credit score is highly overrated, no?

jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: What is the most useless project you have worked on?
This is mission critical.
jurassicfoxy··on Study uses wearables to show that physical activity lengthens REM latency
Whether the measurements are accurate enough is not clear, but they are certainly precise enough. I (and all my friends) can easily see huge differences in HRV on nights of drinking, it's pretty amazing.
jurassicfoxy··on Study uses wearables to show that physical activity lengthens REM latency
It's pretty awful. Though they seem to be capable of detecting terrible sleep, at least. Gotta love a 40 sleep score night.
jurassicfoxy··on Pilot study shows ketogenic diet improves mental illness
Sadly my experience is that keto did absolutely nothing for my overall mood. Strict keto for many (6+?) months. I was quite disappointed by my own lack of results, mentally. Physically: absolutely amazing results.
jurassicfoxy··on JetZero: Ultra-efficient blended wing body jet
In Economy (not lay-flat) the best feature of having a window is about having a wall next to you for sleeping, not for sight-seeing.
jurassicfoxy··on Jasmin Paris Becomes First Woman to Finish Hardest Race
He (Laz) only creates special races, truly sadistic ones. He has zero interest in putting on regular 100 milers. There are thousands of those, but his races are among the most challenging and interesting in the world. He also invented the even more sadistic Backyard Ultra format!
jurassicfoxy··on Jasmin Paris Becomes First Woman to Finish Hardest Race
Exactly. Plus people that finish it can run really hilly 100 milers in ~16 hours. And they finish this one ins just under 60 hours. So I'm guessing it's quite a bit more than 100 miles!
jurassicfoxy··on More than 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2023–more than any year on record
Just did some searching.

According to stats Canada, in 2022 there were 334,081 total deaths (https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=131003...). There were 13,241 MAID deaths reported in Canada in 2022, according to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euthanasia_in_Canada). So that's 3.96 % in 2022. So I guess the claim of 5 % is actually possible.

jurassicfoxy··on Chasing Passive Income, Americans Turn to Vending Machines
I want to make a vending machine that sells vending machines. It'd have to be real fuckin' big.” — Mitch Hedberg
jurassicfoxy··on Pilot of Boeing flight says he lost control after instrument failure
> and the gust triggered a short in some electronics that caused the screens to go blank

That is a hilariously complex first guess.

jurassicfoxy··on Bruno: Fast and Git-friendly open-source API client (Postman alternative)
Second vote for Paw. I also was not happy about the buyout. It has some quirks, but pretty awesome overall.
jurassicfoxy··on Incorrect Stack Exchange answers make me angry
As some higher-up comments have stated, since the answer is Closed as duplicate, it is more limited to interaction than a regular open answer.

Also editing an answer to something completely different is definitely not in the right way to "solve" bad answers, I think. My guess is the edits would be revoked, in any case.

jurassicfoxy··on Apple Orders 'Neuromancer' Series
People are going to complain "This Neuromancer story totally rips off the Matrix!", before realizing the order of operations.
jurassicfoxy··on European summer weather linked to North Atlantic freshwater anomalies
What an idiotic philosophy.

> If we don’t cause an extinction event, earth will do it just fine without us.

But we are, clearly.

jurassicfoxy··on Smoking has long-term effects on the immune system
Grow up. What a stupid thing to brag about. And in no way refutes the original point, that it's disgusting, stupid, and inconsiderate. But obviously you know that and don't care.
jurassicfoxy··on A record number of Americans can't afford rent
> This false premise that "living alone" is some sort of social achievement needs to end.

I agree. I find the idea of living around other people absolutely detestable, but I do often wonder how much of this is cultural.

jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: Looking for lightweight personal blogging platform
Nice work! I love underground documentation. Dubious font color choice ;)
jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: How did yall meet your SO?
If you like long long walks, you could check out trail running / ultramarathon groups. Lots of people to meet at free running nights, which is twice a week at every running store. You don't even have to run! Just walk!

Do you have a dog? You could do dog training. Do you do art? You could take art classes. Do you like to code? (Obviously) Go to coding meetups. Do you like writing/poetry? Go to poetry / open mic night. Do you like games? Check out gaming stores for social events.

Do NOT expect to get dates at these places: that's a bad strategy. But try to meet friends at these places. You meet partners by proxy, and by having fun with your friends.

As a straight male: it's a lot easier to meet guys than to meet girls. Use that strategy.

jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: How did yall meet your SO?
Second this. Bouldering is the MOST social sport on earth. Literally 80 % of the night is sitting around chatting. Plus it's full of young, fit, healthy people, and a good quantity of women. It's honestly perfect.
jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: How did yall meet your SO?
I have met several great partners through dating apps, but it's certainly not easy. Very demoralizing. It's a grind.

I met one partner at my sport club, one partner at UFC night (friend of a friend) and my current g/f I met through my brother. I would say it's certainly easiest to meet people "humanely" in person. It won't break your soul like online dating, but it honestly requires just as much effort.

You have to GO to parties. You have to hang out with your friends, a lot. You cannot be looking for a girlfriend, but try to keep expanding your circle. Like, I have some friends who do not have ONE attractive single friend. Attractive people congregate, so try to hang out with more interesting, sociable, attractive friends. This sounds like weird advice, but I think "choose your friends wisely" applies to many facets of life, and dating is certainly one of them.

jurassicfoxy··on How to write a novel using the snowflake method (2013)
I'm curious to know if authors of great books know the "ending" ahead of time? In Stephen King's case, I'd say "no". In John Irving's case, where the ending is often "put the book down in awe", I'd assume he MUST, right?

I'd love to write a book, I have ideas, I just don't know if I'll ever have a good ending.

This must be the curse of most aspiring writers!?

jurassicfoxy··on US investigation of Tesla steering problems is now one step closer to a recall
> which I admit I personally despise

That's extremely funny. I don't even notice them, but my dad ruined his sun visor once trying to get those damned stickers off, hahaha.

jurassicfoxy··on Ask HN: What to do with small units of time during the working day?
Pushups, air squats, DB military press, neck exercises, walk around the house, adjust your standing desk height for the next block of work.
jurassicfoxy··on Watching Ads on Amazon Prime Video Is a Deal Breaker for Some
I despise ads, and cancelled my Prime immediately upon hearing the news about "additional ad free fee". I did watch a lot of their movies, but at the price it was hardly worth it to begin with.
jurassicfoxy··on Developers experience burnout, but 70% of them code on weekends
Coding and software development are an amazing outlet for creativity. Software developers have the potential to do truly amazing, fun, useful things.

I think that's why coding on the weekends is such a prevalent "problem". Of course, I don't think it's "the" problem at all.

jurassicfoxy··on It's merely a matter of time until disinformation leads to calamity
I believe that a significant quantity of right-wing posts, on Reddit, Facebook, etc. are not only shared by idiots, but are in fact blatant political cyber-warfare.

Just as an example: https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN1CZ2OF/

Things like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romana_Didulo didn't emerge in a vacuum.

https://www.cyber.gc.ca/en/guidance/cyber-threats-canadas-de...

jurassicfoxy··on It's merely a matter of time until disinformation leads to calamity
It's always surprised me how the governments in power have done almost nothing to counteract this, given how political the misinformation can be.

As an example, the federal liberal government in Canada is facing an onslaught of very right wing American-style propaganda. Why not actually take steps to minimize this?

jurassicfoxy··on Anon Boeing engineer reveals why the 737 door blew off
One thing I don't understand is the why the door isn't designed so that pressure doesn't seal it tighter. Like a manhold cover. It seems at least the door needs to be "lifted" to be removed, so the missing bolts hold it down (but presumably do not hold against outward pressure).

I guess that's why it doesn't immediately fall out.

Has anyone seen mechanical or assembly drawings of these things?
