junipertea··on IRS tests free e-filing system that could compete with tax prep giants
As long as the system is correct and I don't get jailed I would use it out of principle regardless of UX.
junipertea··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
Not sure you can do anything more unpopular than lay off 80% of your workspace, saddle your company with 13B debt and drive away advertisers only to bet everything on a $8 subscription paid by right wing simps. Like, what else unpopular would he need a scapegoat for?
junipertea··on Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs
Well, yeah. Experience with multibillion companies is lottery, knowing software a commodity.
junipertea··on Europeans drain billions from banks, fed up with shrinking savings
Until the options go bankrupt
junipertea··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
We need more data efficient neural network architectures. Transformers work exceptionally well because they allow us to just dump more data into it, but ultimately we want to learn advanced behavior without having to feed it Shakespeare
junipertea··on Making Python faster with Rust
That’s a lot of opinions for so little exposure. There are a lot uses that don’t involve docker or a dozen virtual envs.
junipertea··on CoLT5: Faster Long-Range Transformers With Conditional Computation
There was no competition in academic publishing until openai made it so! The research probably started way before gpt4 became a thing.
junipertea··on Dalai: Automatically install, run, and play with LLaMA on your computer
That’s 68 billions of parameters. It probably does not fit on ram. Though If you encode each parameter using one byte, you would need 68GB RAM which you could get on workstations at this point.
junipertea··on Germany opposes EU plans for client-side scanning
I definitely agree surveillance is happening and I don't mean to do a whataboutism, but why such emphasis on Western internet? Are you implying this does not happen elsewhere? If we take a counterpoint to West, India and China both have significant surveillance of their citizen and they account for the other third of the world population.

Let's just agree it's a problem everywhere?

junipertea··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
I love thinkpads but the T480 is basically objectively worse in every single aspect except price and repairability. I don’t think I can go back from all day battery and quiet CPU during high loads.

I could definitely use my T450 for however long I need and know I can replace parts, but I’d rather have macs for 5 years and upgrade for another performance bump. Some things are just nicer

junipertea··on Programming AIs worry me
But if you can try asking for different things and it takes 10s to create, it might be easier to just iterate like that than ask a developer to spend a day on it.
junipertea··on Ask HN: Open-source ChatGPT alternatives?
Even openAI with the massive success and popularity gain can not sustain keeping it for free. The 0.02$ cents is a bargain for the value provided.

OPs point was most of us can't burn 10k on a internet hobby project, and it costs probably 10x-100x more to train. How would you expect to provide people a free service? People are training it to open source right now, so please be patient.

junipertea··on Blue Origin manufactured solar cell prototype from lunar regolith simulants
Maybe bragging rights. My dog photo collection can survive societal collapse.
junipertea··on Now Available: Ivory for Mastodon by Tapbots
What's wrong with wanting to get paid for a product you develop?
junipertea··on ChatRWKV, like ChatGPT but powered by the RWKV (RNN-based, open) language model
They also did reinforcement learning on top of a frozen trained model. It is considerably more than just attaching a UI as that would just finish sentences compared to answering questions. https://huggingface.co/blog/rlhf
junipertea··on Ask HN: Is long-term employee commitment to the same company still appreciated?
Finanically, it's probably a bad move. But I am happy at my current job (4th year in) and I'm getting steady promotions and progress. Over the years my impact increased dramatically and I don't think I would've done anything as significant if I left by end of my second year.

I don't see a person jumping ship every 2 years as a liability, as long as they onboard quickly and get their job done. It's always great to retain more knowledge but we move on if it doesn't.

junipertea··on AI models that predict disease are not as accurate as reports might suggest
Maybe removing a human from the equation would lead to more honest outcome? E.g. people google all sorts of issues more earnestly than they would describe it to the doctors. The bottleneck would be properly understanding what the user intends, which might be out of reach.
junipertea··on Snap lays off 20% of employees
I think hardware is not a reason for their current downfall. Going into hardware is away to diversify and avoid the problems they are facing right now: TikTok.
junipertea··on Show HN: SaveSlack – create searchable knowledgebase from your Slack community
1. Confluence is awful. 2. The reality is, people use slack right now and share an enormous amount of knowledge within channels. Would it be better if everyone spent effort writing knowledge to a wiki and linking it? Maybe. It is not happening right now and this tool solves a problem that does exist.
junipertea··on The euro has tumbled near parity to the US dollar
1. It's not as common as everyone claims. 2. Big money comes with US companies, and then you can be at whim of US timezone, or worse, a big company that is not remote-first or asynchronous.
junipertea··on Ask HN: Why not replace gifted education with no assignments for top students?
"Gifted students" can easily become lazy with no motivation and milestones and end up being overtaken by "average" student with work ethic.
junipertea··on Ask HN: 6-hour workdays more important than 4-day workweeks IMO
Different learning styles are actually disputed [0], but I agree that 1. it's easier for employer to fit everyone in one box. 2. If people had more individual approaches, they would work better

junipertea··on Lepiter: Knowledge Mgmt and Multi-Lang Notebooks and Moldable Dev
Sounds nice, but where is the download button?
junipertea··on Meta's A.I. exodus: Top talent quits as lab tries to keep pace with rivals
I make 6 figures. I honestly do not look at food prices when I shop. It's a negligible expense after rent, savings and mortgage.
junipertea··on Tesla drivers report a surge in ‘phantom braking’
While it is true just some chinese EV manufactures use LIDAR right now (Nio, Xpeng), Volvo[1] and Mercedes[2] are on board. I believe once the sensors become cheap enough, people will just use that rather than bet on cameras.

junipertea··on Tesla drivers report a surge in ‘phantom braking’
Because they are forced by NHTSA. I fully condone that btw.
junipertea··on Gains I'm seeing from my second brain tool
Second brain is a pretty common term for curating your knowledge in a structured way. While a text editor is a main component of it, it tends to allow us to:

1) connect notes/ideas using tags or links

2) automatically generate graphs/views (some even do sql)

3) make it easy to look up past information.

Some people can do it using a single txt file in notepad.exe and ctrl+f, some people add tags/headers/titles to make it easier, and some people go full graph DB with roam research. You might not enjoy that (and based on the comments, we enjoy dumping stuff to it more than using it), but no need to dismiss this.

junipertea··on TSMC’s Arizona Culture Clash
Free market is the ability to choose from either camp, with majority picking the former.
junipertea··on Video streaming battery life improved from 12h (12 Pro Max) to 25h (13 Pro Max)
Maybe the variable refresh rate helps as well?
junipertea··on Alabama man dies after being turned away from 43 hospitals as Covid packs ICUs
This is really upsetting. People literally tossing vaccine into the trash to claim they are vaccinated and can travel.
