junga··on Has the world become less colourful?
> I think most people aren’t highly motivated to do that.

But they were in the past? I don't know but I wonder why this might have changed.

junga··on Put That There [video] (1983)
This makes me wonder if Siri's ever got told "Hey Siri. I want to talk to your manager".
junga··on Help me identify possible tracking device found in my car
Sure. But otoh the car is idling for tens of minutes maybe and possibly no single part of the engine and exhaust system is gaining the needed temperatures to operate cleanly. This means more emissions, more wear and more stressed out neighbours. I'm sure about the last one at least.
junga··on Help me identify possible tracking device found in my car
I am unable to find a source for this. Until now I thought heating up stationary is bad concerning all possible aspects, including emissions.
junga··on Flânerie: The Art of Aimless Strolling
20 years ago I enjoyed this too. But today I can't imagine burning fuel as a past time activity. It even makes me angry thinking others still do this.
junga··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired? (June 2022)
I managed to survive three rounds of PI Planning before going nuts. Wasn't the only reason to leave that company but surely a big pain point.
junga··on Stop Validating Email Addresses with Regex (2012)
And it becomes super annoying when you can't paste into the second field. Had to implement this once - should have rage quit immediately.
junga··on Playing with DALL-E 2
I think I've never read text while dreaming.
junga··on Wolfenstein 3D secrets revealed by John Romero in lengthy post-mortem chat
But don't play that data track on your stereo as it might destroy your speakers! I was really afraid of this back in those days.
junga··on The hardest program I've ever written (2015)
But you are not me and here we are.
junga··on The data are clear: The boys are not all right
I tend to agree with that piece. But what made me ask for data in the first place was my perception of the opening of your post which I read as „living in a traditional two parent household is more beneficial than being a white male“ since you mentioned race and gender.
junga··on The data are clear: The boys are not all right
Since you mentioned data: You sure do have data to back your claims?
junga··on The UX on this small child is terrible
We got this book from my colleagues for the birth of our first child. Surprisingly it's quite good. I expected it to be a cringeworthy collection of nerd jokes but it's full of reasonable advice.
junga··on Everyone on Earth is your cousin (2015)
> […] and having video of your boring everyday interactions with them is better than having only your memories of them.

How comes? To me, the most valuable things from the past are the memories. Not photos, video and stuff.

junga··on SARS-CoV-2 escape in vitro from highly neutralizing Covid-19 convalescent plasma (2020)
I just had this thought yesterday: Could the process you described be sped up? If there was a virus variant that spreads faster but is less deadly it would replace the known variants but do less harm. So let's head to the bat cave and build the virus variant we could handle. (what could possibly go wrong?) At least in theory this should be possible, right?

Edit: Fixed typos

junga··on The Burnout Society
> […] but it's OK to be mediocre.

Being worse is pretty ok also!

junga··on Nuclear fusion is close enough to start dreaming
Is this still an issue when fusion power is available?
junga··on People who have unusual, or non-existent, inner voices
Hmm, I then hear my inner voice repeating that text and shouting FOO at the same time. It makes me feel stupid because I can't stop repeating what I read.
junga··on Klimaticket: All public transport in Austria with a single ticket for 1095 EUR/y
I'm not sure if I'd agree. This might as well be another mutation of sunk cost fallacy. Anyway, the sooner you sell your car, the higher the price. (ignoring really old and valuable cars here)
junga··on Klimaticket: All public transport in Austria with a single ticket for 1095 EUR/y
Prices for travelling by car should contain way more stuff than just gas. There's taxes, insurance, repair and all that nasty stuff that really makes very high costs per mile or kilometer if you do the math.
junga··on Cat Automatic Sprayer
If you can‘t recognise that one cat then you could maybe somehow mark your cats?
junga··on Cat Automatic Sprayer
I wouldn‘t stress the fact it‘s a stray cat too much. In my experience the situation wouldn‘t be any different if the aggressive cat had an owner in the neighborhood. Disclaimer: I don‘t have cats myself but all the cats in my area (non stray) seem to use my ground as their toilette :(
junga··on Show HN: An app that helps engineers fight back against pointless meetings
Wow, 90 minutes. That‘s mind boggling. How many people do attend these daily meetings? I guess there‘s only a few persons using most of the time for their talking?
junga··on Hatetris – Tetris which always gives you the worst piece
Wow, like every time I grab the old gameboy and play some rounds of tetris I just think the very same thing: tetris is a wonderful anology for life. And of course I did not expect someone else to think the same. Thank you! :)
junga··on Best practices for remote software engineering
It‘s not the middle of the afternoon all around the globe at the same time. Some of us already spent eight hours slacking off.
junga··on Raspberry Pi Lego Sorter
Lego Sorter as a Service coming soon!
junga··on Poor evidence that Q-tips are harmful
Just asked my significant other about this. She uses her right hand for her left ear.
junga··on Apple Silicon M1 chip in MacBook Air outperforms high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro
Citation needed.
junga··on SpaceX Starlink average speedtest is 42.3Mbps down / 9.7 Mbps up
And hitting the back button sends you to the linked page.
junga··on Things Unexpectedly Named After People
Mariabidet is a good one. This will stick in my head forever! Especially when flushing :)
