julius_set··on Bitcoin is a disaster
I see a lot of biased posts on Hacker news regarding Bitcoin. How it will replace fiat, how it will revolutionize banking, how it will continue to go up in price.

The fact is that the technology powering Bitcoin is not great. There are better alternatives to Bitcoin, transactions still take a long time to finish on Bitcoin. And the alternatives themselves need to be refined too.

There are also still a lot of scam coins in play, I personally know a few founders (no relation and no business doing work with them), where they admitted to me their coin was a scam in them getting rich.

So I’m skeptical, very very skeptical. These “friends” got rich off poor chaps looking to make a quick buck. I am almost envious, then I remember that the feds or IRS or some other institution will come after then at some point.

One of them is paying off their current user base because they got hacked.

julius_set··on AirPods Max
Lol this costs more than a Xbox Series X or PS5 for comparison and with Xbox Game Pass you’re at same value as AirPods Max but with hours and hours of entertainment. This isn’t worth $550 probably $200-$300 around AirPods Pro price.
julius_set··on U.S. states plan to sue Facebook next week: sources
Why not telecom? This is dumb. Yes I get it Facebook did so e idiotic things I agree, but Telecoms are pillaging us everyday.
julius_set··on I should have loved biology
A lot of it is tied to the dog and pony show that is pre-med. You have 90% of the class interested in going to Medical/Dental school. So most students are NOT interested in the WHY but the How can I get an A.
julius_set··on Masayoshi Son had help pulling SoftBank from the brink
Nice PR piece for Son, their public relations department must have pulled some nice strings after all the heavy losses Mayoshi racked up lol
julius_set··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
Ok legit question, is Biden’s mental health an issue? (i.e. Dementia, Alzheimer’s). Surprised my family brings this up, and I’m not sure how to reply back to them..
julius_set··on The rise of platonic co-parenting
So the kids grow up seeing their parents as just associates. Sounds healthy, what a great way to show your kids how intimacy, empathy, and a normal romantic relationship works.
julius_set··on Netflix Android and iOS Studio Apps now powered by Kotlin Multiplatform
This is for an internal app, makes sense that it worked out well for them because the internal app is mostly a greenfield project. Some resume padding and performance review check offs for those associated with the project, however this Kotlin Multiplatform is NOT stable enough for most large scale applications.

For starters good luck turning on / off features, handling UI state, and tying in the business logic to that state. And good luck mangling dependencies and build times with a new added Kotlin dependency :-)

julius_set··on Vega-Lite: A Grammar of Interactive Graphics
Why is it so hard to create a simple data table with 2 columns in Vega? Literally 0 examples in your documentation for this.
julius_set··on Sketch: Proud to Build a Truly Native Mac App
They’ve literally stated that Sketch app has live collaboration coming
julius_set··on Aliens on 1k nearby stars could see us, new study suggests
Cue the plot of Doom Eternal
julius_set··on Black Hole Visualization in Unreal Engine
“I have no mouth and I must scream” basically but black hole edition.

Wonder if it’s possible for some type of unique intelligence to live inside a black hole.

There are lots of particles rushing towards the singularity and if there are “holes” small enough in the black where these particles spaghettify maybe some some electrical activity might organize together into some kind of intelligence (for brief moments).

I.e. conscious “beings” spontaneously appearing and disintegrating in and out of existence at these extreme gravitational levels.

julius_set··on Vapor – Decentralized Web over Bitcoinized HTTP
This looks like the perfect example of I have a hammer so everything looks like a nail. Not needed, unnecessary, and most likely expensive (meaning will bloat up my server costs) :-)
julius_set··on Android In a Box – Run Android applications on any GNU/Linux operating system
As someone who’s been writing both iOS and Android apps for almost a decade now. This made me chuckle, the sheer absurdity of Android being the standard when Google can’t even ensure mass adoption for their latest releases is just too ironic.
julius_set··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 14
There’s a very vibrant backend community for Swift, Vapor is growing and used in production for a lot of companies.

julius_set··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 14
I mean you can say that for any language. If someone has to learn C or Java, you still need to learn how those languages work, build domain expertise and so on.

Swift is a very nice general purpose language and I’ve been writing code decades in almost most mainstream languages. I much prefer writing Swift code, in face some of my back end projects have been written in 100% swift, this allowed me to reuse models and APIs with the iOS and MacOS counterparts.

julius_set··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 14
That’s not a problem with the language that’s just you not knowing how to use it, two very different things.

Associated values with enums are very powerful features of the language.

julius_set··on How poker and a spaceship imposter game make you better at life
Among us is nothing new it’s a rehash of an old Starcraft 1 map mod called “The Thing,”

The idea was you had up to 8 marines and 1 was a zergling, stick together until the timer runs out to win.

Fun times. I miss those days.

julius_set··on Microsoft to acquire ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks for $7.5B
People are forgetting that the original Zenimax Studios is not exactly the most pro-gaming group of shareholders. Their original motivations were to increase shareholder value (I imagine that Fallout 76 decision was a factor among this).

I think Microsoft’s gaming vision aligns well with Bethesda’s and they probably have a better vision compared to Zenimax board of directors.

julius_set··on How to Hide a Billion Dollars: Three Techniques the Ultrarich Use to Dodge Ex-Sp
I would say still thinking too narrowly, some interesting science fictions novels had knowledge as a form of currency in some technocratic societies (The Omar ~> Deus Ex Invisible War)

Not saying this is the best solution but again different form of “currency / money.”

Imagine you are a human who is part of a hive mind, (think Deus Ex Helios AI) you wouldn’t have a need for money.

julius_set··on How to Hide a Billion Dollars: Three Techniques the Ultrarich Use to Dodge Ex-Sp
Think we need something better than the concept of money.
julius_set··on The Forgotten Ones: HP Nanoprocessor
For a second I got excited this would be a “HP” lovecraft themed software blog post
julius_set··on The Three Bay Areas (2017)
Even if this article is a satire peace, it’s extremely ignorant.

What about the people that earned their keep as category one? For example I have friends who are refugees who now fit into bracket one.

This article makes it seem like category 1 are self entitled yuppie brats.

julius_set··on GitHub Public Roadmap
So are we finally getting dark mode for Github on web?...
julius_set··on Forget Google, time to end the Visa-MasterCard duopoly
Just curious why PayPal or Venmo?
julius_set··on Has GitHub been down more since its acquisition by Microsoft?
I mean makes sense. They are probably migrating their infrastructure over to Microsoft’s and such.

Disclaimer: I don’t work at MS so no clue, but have been part of acquisitions

julius_set··on TikTok and 53 other iOS apps still snoop your sensitive clipboard data
I mean how big of a deal is this?

UIPasteboard.general.string gives you access to what the user copied. I’m sure some apps are just trying to provide a better user experience...

Example: they’ve copied a website make it easy for them to share it

julius_set··on Testers vs. TDD
Can someone address the argument of:

Writing tests for everything (or almost everything) as proposed by TDD results in... more code to maintain.

This is the argument most teams have had that I’ve observed which resulted in little to no tests added.

I’ve seen above in both small teams (startups), and large orgs,

julius_set··on Ask HN: What’s a big trend we should all be following?
Shift away from swiping based dating apps. Most people I’ve spoken to have all been infuriated over dating apps, and are now looking for alternatives. Big opportunity here
julius_set··on Airbnb Is Moving Off of React Native (2018)
Every time there’s a thread about React Native the RN fanboys come in droves, the reality is that RN is an abstraction over Native Mobile and will always be inferior to it.

You will end up debugging issues for supporting multiple platforms via one codebase.

I like React just not for Native Mobile, nowadays stick to native Swift or Kotlin and wait for SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose to make Mobile development seamless
