juiyout··on Programmer's Resignation from 1985
> they’re better at bullshitting engineers to their face.

Why did you call me out?

juiyout··on Employees are quitting instead of giving up working from home
If you work in a team that requires lots of collaboration, you might not get to restructure work.

Can people call you or message you to clarify what you just now pushed at 11pm? Do you respond immediately? Let's say you do immediately because you restructure your night time as your best work time, does that mean you're automatically exempt from 8am meetings in a few hours?

Come to think of it. Pushing code at 11pm is not that unusual even pre-covid, but the expectation for the associated communication might be totally different.

juiyout··on Voyagers Detect an Increase in the Density of Space Outside the Solar System
I think it’s off.

It felt like saying “the velocity of distance”

juiyout··on Voyagers Detect an Increase in the Density of Space Outside the Solar System
Exactly where I got confused when only reading the title. After reading the article to realize it’s about the density of matter.

But what a concept though, how can a space-time be denser than any other? I’m not versed in this, maybe it can?

juiyout··on Tokyo Stock Exchange Blackout: One Piece of Hardware Took Down a Market
Agreed that 2 million USD is not much compared to total revenue.

However, you see, TSE YoY growth from 2017 to 2018 is roughly 4 million USD. Growth is hard as it is for TSE, leaving money on the table like this time definitely hurts.

juiyout··on Tokyo Stock Exchange Blackout: One Piece of Hardware Took Down a Market
Stock exchanges earn major share of their profit from processing the orders.

They just lost at least a whole day of revenue.

After compiling some number for their annual report[1], I would say the loss from TSE revenue alone is roughly 2 million USD. But considering the effect trickling down the revenue stream where other security partners whose revenue depends on earning transaction fees, I would say the real damage would be many folds of that 2 million loss from TSE.

I read it just now.

It seems that the massive part missed is that AWS claims Trump screwed with AWS.

juiyout··on Professor suspended for saying 那个 nà ge
If Ne-ga is followed by other nouns, it becomes more like "that.....that...tha..." or "the...the...the"
juiyout··on Professor suspended for saying 那个 nà ge
context is being purposefully ignored here though.
juiyout··on Professor suspended for saying 那个 nà ge
depends on the locale, in my area almost no one says nei ge.

I heard one cannot say "disabled", "hearing-impaired", "wheelchair-bound" as those are offensive terms.

juiyout··on The epidemiologist behind Sweden’s controversial coronavirus strategy
> We are in the middle of the epidemic and, in my view, the science shows that closing schools at this stage does not make sense. You have to shut down schools fairly early in the epidemic to get an effect.

Could anyone shed some light on why Sweden chooses not to close down schools fairly early?

juiyout··on If you imagine a business making surgical facemasks is working 24/7, guess again
Same in Taiwan, mask making has not been very profitable. Taiwan imports 93% of masks from China.

Govt stepped in quickly on the brink of this outbreak though. Govt called 34 companies together each responsible for different parts of mask manufacturing from material, machine parts, installation, assembly, etc and govt up front paid 6 million USD for 62 production lines to be installed and assigned military personnel to help man the lines 24/7.

Daily mask production ramped up from 3 million to 10 million in 3 weeks. This is only barely covering Taiwan's domestic needs. Taiwan is now aiming for daily production of 20 million.

For distribution, govt rations out all manufactured masks. Currently each citizen gets 9-10 masks every 2 week and I believe each doctor receives 40 per week. The price of the masks for regular folks is fixed at around 1 USD for 6 masks. It is free for med staff.

As for the installed production line, once the mask maker reached the production quota of 5 million masks for a particular production line, the mask maker gets to keep that production line for free. Note that the mask makers, once involved in this project, pretty much gave their business as usual.

I would think it is tax dollar well spent.

juiyout··on Time to Ban Wet Markets
Can't remember which reality show was it. But the concept was for a bunch of city people living in a small mountainous village without outside help. As I flipped though channels, there was an episode that caught my attention.

On this episode, these city people were craving for pork. I believe they were seeded a pig ready to be butchered. Now their community rule was "If you help out in butchering the pig, you get to have a share." Essentially in this show, you need to kill every single animal yourselves if you want to eat it. Those city people were not good at butchering either. I recall the scene was pretty ugly. Quickly some people decided they don't want pork anymore after some dry heaving. For those who went through with butchering, they get to make pork chops and cure their own bacon just to add some delight to their arduous rural lives.

I often wonder what I would do in that situation.

juiyout··on Time to Ban Wet Markets
It may be bizarre. I grew up on traditional Chinese medicine in Taiwan. Vast majority I had was various types of plants like you mentioned in power, pellet, or pill form very similar to western medicine. There is some medicine extracted from animal products like musk, honey, etc, though much less used.

There are major efforts in Taiwan's universities to reinterpret TCM with contemporary science methodology. In term of manufacturing, the process is very far from the image of a "wet market". Acupuncture & Tuina, as part of TCM, have been applied on athletes around the world.

Due to my first hand account of TCM, I'm unable to dismiss TCM just as easily as you.

One thing I like to point out though, Taiwan's regulations on wild life and traditional medicine may be what China currently needs to curtail future potential outbreaks. As you know, TCM is tremendously popular in Taiwan yet Taiwan doesn't produce outbreaks like its neighbors does.

juiyout··on Spotify to Apple: Time to Play Fair

juiyout··on Spotify to Apple: Time to Play Fair
In your vending machine example, it is a transaction, not a tax, as you implied and I agree. However Apple taking cut of app's revenue is awfully a lot like corporate tax.
