juangacovas··on Do svidaniya, Igor, and thank you for Nginx
Lighttpd has received very nice updates lately (HTTP/2, etc.) and I use it daily for mission critical servers (facing private customers) behind HAProxy, Varnish and the like. No problems so far after 5 years.
juangacovas··on Imap-backup: Backup Gmail or other IMAP accounts to disk
Imapsync at https://imapsync.lamiral.info/ is an updated CLI tool that effectively syncs big or small IMAP boxes. More for moving han backup, it can serve you well since you can interrupt the process and sync huge boxes without having to pray for the entire box to copy at once. I've used it for years as a migration tool and keeps being updated.
juangacovas··on Ask HN: How do you build your personal start page?
I like the simple system of DokuWiki, no databases.
juangacovas··on Things to say when you're losing a technical argument (2001)
And then sometimes you see them fly away to another job after not much time
juangacovas··on Minimum Viable Secure Product
"Ensure non-production environments do not contain production data"

Yeah right, so how can you reproduce some bugs that only appear on production data, on other environment that is not production?

juangacovas··on Memcached vs. Redis – More Different Than You Would Expect
Not tested recently, but 3 years ago it was said that Redis was slightly faster than memcached for PHP sessions -for example- and I benchmarked it to decide to change. Add persistence to that formula and Redis was a winner for me (put your app into maintenance mode, reboot server(s), enable app again and your users can just resume operations...)
juangacovas··on ScummVM 2.5 “Twenty years ago today”
Also remember to look for replaying using Roland MT-32 emulation for enhanced music: some adventure titles had better music and effects with that card, and for some folks it was not easy to have it.
juangacovas··on Generate ASCII graphic for code or mail signatures
My take on ascii generation stuff:

[2]: https://asciiflow.com (fast online diagrams)

juangacovas··on Maybe the spaghetti code conjecture is false
>spending hours chasing down obscure bugs with endless print_r's to follow state changes

It's not better chasing that using an interactive debugger with expression breakpoints? (pause execution when some variable/property changes?)

juangacovas··on Napster.com banned at some universities for clogging networks (2000)
You reminded me The Eye [1], an archive of stuff like that including old software and an overwhelming bunch of non-mainstream and abandoned things

juangacovas··on Fedora Workstation: Our Vision for Linux Desktop
I stopped worrying about breaking linux workstations and not-virtualized servers after discovering "Relax and Recover" (ReaR) which allows "Acronis-like" ISO rescue to previous "snapshots". I think it's nice to at least know you can. I wrote a guide to backup using sshfs with ReaR, here[1]

juangacovas··on Developers fix multitude of vulnerabilities in Apache HTTP Server
lighttpd is still a thing (I use it for very critical stuff)
juangacovas··on Developer experience is user experience
Yeah, I care about the code that comes into the repository: charset, tab/spaces, style, etc. Who cares about the OS or IDE the developer used to commit or type? Unless you see a productivity/code issues problem...
juangacovas··on To Don't – The reverse to-do list
A code style guidelines seems like a nice don't list to me, if accompanied with examples
juangacovas··on Ben Nadel: I Wish My Relational Database Tables Were Narrower
A recent real case... HFSQL table with 220 columns, Select * one row, 1 second. Select just some columns, 0.015 s.
juangacovas··on Ask HN: What does database (internals) development look like?
As others have mentioned, MariaDB also hosts a Jira: jira.MariaDB.org

Curious detail is Jira itself doesn't officially support MariaDB.

juangacovas··on WinFsp – Windows File System Proxy
Haven't tried the latest versions of WinFsp + SSHFS-Win, glad to see a new GUI for the later and new versions. My experience is good but if you have an unstable connection, the mapped drive didn't reconnect by itself at all times. For a better experience I've always relied on RaiDrive (free with Ads) or SFTP Drive from N software (free for non-commercial)
juangacovas··on Ask HN: Do You Use a Debugger?
Well, a debugger on a breakpoint should allow you to inspect any local scope variables along the globals, go through the call stack.. And you can watch vars, execute immediate commands and more in others. If that's not "print" on breakpoint...
juangacovas··on Linux Kernel Security Done Right
I used to put main kernels compiled for a very standard distro, on production, and manually updated twice a month after testing a bit each release.

  * One time I dodged a data corruption bug with a default, common filesystem, that obviously got rapidly patched.
  * Last time and very recently, main kernel introduced a bug that made NFS just don't work for clients trying to connect, until a patch was released and applied for those servers.
On the other hand, also saw a vendor mainstream bogus update that rendered the boxes unpingable after a reboot. Could patch before a reboot was needed so day saved.

You're almost never safe. But I agree some testing helps. Anyway not everyone has the infra and/or resources.

juangacovas··on Ask HN: What is your ideal email backup solution?
Since nobody mentioned it, imapsync[1] is a gorgeous command line utility that does one thing and does it well: copy an IMAP account from server A to server B, by sync only, so you can stop / disconnect at any time and continue where the copy left.

We use it to transfer around email hosting, but it's also suitable for backups due its sync only mechanism.

juangacovas··on Ask HN: Which vintage computers do you find interesting?
Same here about Olivetti. In case you didn't know, last year I learnt about PCem, an emulator to bring back to life those XT 8086 8088, 286, 386, 486... Take a look at my page about it ;) https://juangacovas.info/doku.php/windows/howtos/pcemu-page
juangacovas··on Ask HN: Do you self-host your database?
Sorry, I meant multi-source replication (different masters, different DBs to same slave(s)).
juangacovas··on Ask HN: Do you self-host your database?
Self-hosting MariaDB with multi-master replication. Works pretty well for my cases. Have a friend that was surprised by the AWS pricing changes on Aurora (they charge per query now instead of bandwidth/usage?)
juangacovas··on Microsoft Teams 2 will use half the memory, dropping Electron for Edge Webview2
For the sake of discovery, I'd say Manticore search does a pretty (and fast) good job with full text searches and suggestions.
juangacovas··on Rufus: Reliable USB Formatting Utility
Thanks for this, indeed I've been able to recover a stick that went non-visible anymore, by using InitDisk
juangacovas··on We Must Start Planning for a Permanent Pandemic
> knowing that our health care systems will be overwhelmed and a decent chunk of the population (10%?) would die

So you accept in your theory that you can die because of an overwhelmed health care that cannot save you from a trivial otherwise treatment, not Covid19

juangacovas··on The architecture behind a one-person tech startup
I've had some cases of customers asking "what happens if your company dies" for cloud services even knowing the company I work for is +30 employees, so not just for "one person company", some people seems to care about what happens to their data / service. I'm just wondering if that comes from conferences or talks that points out that a lot more/less.
juangacovas··on Show HN: My personal website is a shell
This reminds me the HTML5 terminal component, which didn't get much attention. I've used it for some API works and is indeed useful / cool
juangacovas··on Ask HN: How to get a Logo/ Corporate Designs in 2021?
I have good experiences with Logo Design offers at https://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=56
juangacovas··on We created a fake language to root out resume liars
I've interviewed on occasion (IT related). By far, the worst experience was about someone I approved and later discovered he clearly cheated/lied in the interview. Like, I set too high expectations and slowly but consistently realizing that "this guy just lied to me" in so many levels.

I learnt from that so yes, for me, lying in an interview is the worst thing you can do.
