ju-st··on GLM 5.2 vs. Opus

ju-st··on TÜV Report 2026: Tesla Model Y has the worst reliability of all 2022–2023 cars (2025)
Because TÜV report are bullshit, Audis get checked and fixed by the dealer before the TÜV checks them, of course they have lower failure rates. TÜV competitor Dekra stopped publishing this kind of report years ago because of this https://www.dekra.de/de/dekra-gebrauchtwagenreport/
ju-st··on Comparing AWS Lambda ARM64 vs. x86_64 Performance Across Runtimes in Late 2025
Would be interesting to add a cold start + "import boto3" benchmark for Python as importing boto3 takes forever on lambdas with little memory. For this scenario I only know this benchmark but it is from 2021 https://github.com/MauriceBrg/aws-blog.de-projects/tree/mast...
ju-st··on CO2 sequestration through accelerated weathering of limestone on ships
We have already perfectly sequestered CO2 in the ground and still dig it up and burn it. Insane.

ju-st··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (November 2024)

  Location: southern Germany
  Remote: Yes
  Willing to relocate: Yes
Technologies: Python (Flask, backend), C# .NET (some WPF), AWS Solution Architect (Associate, actual experience mostly in Serverless: Lambda, DynamoDB, AppSync, Glue, S3, Athena, CDK, IaC), InfluxDB, Redis, OpenWRT
Résumé/CV: 6 years of experience working as Software Engineer in industrial IoT (IIoT) context. Focus was always getting the data from the machinery, processing it and making the data usable for the user. Processing data on the edge, providing and using a plethora of interfaces, processing data in the cloud, Data Lake, I have seen it all :-) Also worked as team lead/product owner for a while and had good success by reducing complexity. I have high standards regarding code quality. Contact me for full CV, Github.

ju-st··on Hetzner Object Storage
S3 Select is not available anymore for new customers. Athena with columnar file format (eg parquet) in S3 and partitioning with Glue Data catalog is the solution for OP's problem. The cost of this kind of queries is very low because you only pay the actual data consumed/requested. And with the columnar file format Athena only accesses the necessary columns. And the data in the columns is usually compressed so the amount of data is even less.

ju-st··on Maestro: Netflix's Workflow Orchestrator
I had the same question and asked Claude Sonnet, see its answer below.

In the context of a workflow engine like Netflix Conductor, a workflow refers to a structured sequence of tasks or activities that need to be executed to complete a specific business process or achieve a particular goal. [...]

To give you a concrete example, imagine an e-commerce platform's order processing workflow:

1. Validate order 2. Check inventory 3. Process payment 4. If payment successful: a. Reserve inventory b. Initiate shipping c. Send confirmation email 5. If payment fails: a. Cancel order b. Notify customer

In this workflow, each step could be a separate microservice or function. The workflow engine would orchestrate the execution of these steps, handling the flow of data between them, managing any errors or retries, and ensuring the entire process completes successfully.

Would you like me to elaborate on any specific aspect of workflows in this context? Or perhaps you're curious about how they're implemented or managed in practice?

ju-st··on Next gen 3D metal printing
Sorry I wasn't talking about density but the copper content of a powder which is printable. Googling a bit I found this presentation from 2022 showing that a density of 99.5% for pure copper is possible although at half the productivity of a copper alloy https://www.coppercouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/TS2...
ju-st··on Next gen 3D metal printing
Printing pure copper (99.9%) is possible since years with SLM process using lasers with an appropriate wavelength
ju-st··on Inverters with constant full load capability for electric drives
The 'full load' designation may be a distraction as the research appears to be focused on improving the cooling in general which obviously enables the use of less efficient and cheaper electronics.
ju-st··on Boeing chief must have engineering background, Emirates boss says
I remember some posts on HN describing ASML's software quality as atrocious.

ju-st··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
TÜV competitor DEKRA stopped publishing their "fault report" because most cars are nowadays fixed before being checked by Tüv/Dekra. ( https://www.dekra.de/de/dekra-gebrauchtwagenreport/)

That's why the buyer demographic of a car is the most significant factor in the ranking. Cars used by companies, seniors, wealthy individuals or cabriolets have a good ranking. Meanwhile cars bought majorily by frugal or smart customers (Dacia, Tesla) tend to have bad rankings. This is because it's much more cost efficient to let Tüv/Dekra check you car before doing any repairs. Also what is ignored in the ranking is that some faults are much more important than others. Afaik a bad parking light can have the same influence on the ranking as a broken down transmission.

ju-st··on FreeBSD replaces bubblesort with mergesort on SYSINTs
You could use a ADAU1701 DSP board (cheaper and shittier minidsp) or do it directly on a modern/fast microcontroller, e.g. ESP32. I used an ESP32 to adjust frequency response of a small diy loudspeaker (and added Bluetooth).
ju-st··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
I get much better results by clicking on the text input field and pressing enter every time after moving/zooming instead of clicking on "search this area".
ju-st··on MS Teams is down
Germany: Joining a meeting with invite URL worked for some colleagues, others could only join after the the group chat called them directly.

ju-st··on Tell HN: IPv6-only still pretty much unusable
If your office has a /48 you could surely memorize the subnet itself and/or give your important endpoint the shortest possible IP address like: 2001:db8:a0b0::1 or even something funny like 2001:db8:a0b0::0ff1:ce
ju-st··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2022)

ju-st··on Engineer distributes resume via IPv6 traceroute
Doesn't seem to be the case, apple.com does not have an AAAA record. :(

Also shame on Microsoft for no full IPv6 support in WSL2.

ju-st··on Logistics, How Did They Do It, Part III: On the Move
Absolutely, I was so proud of my Google skills for finding this blog three weeks ago, and now it's on top of Hackernews. The series about the decline of the Roman empire is amazing.
ju-st··on Oncall Compensation for Software Engineers
It is probably 875€/week normal salary for an IT operations job at a German bank.
ju-st··on Ask HN: Working in tech for climate?
Outside of HN bubble 55k€ is a normal/good salary for some regions in Germany (and maybe Austria, idk). Especially if you maybe add 10-30% to that number it should be not a problem to find senior developers. If you want to pay double that and still don't find senior developers then either your company is invisible (maybe start with advertising that kind of salary) or requires too specialized prior knowledge.
ju-st··on SQLite or PostgreSQL? It's Complicated
no, although the DB was not opened readonly mode. I tested with apachebench with many parallel requests on endpoints using only SELECTs
ju-st··on SQLite or PostgreSQL? It's Complicated
>> when more than one process need to acces the DB

> Easy, you use `journal_mode` set to `WAL` when you connect to the sqlite database.

and set isolation level and check_same_thread and PRAGMA synchronous and then put all queries in retry loops because the DB is maybe locked https://sqlite.org/wal.html#sometimes_queries_return_sqlite_...

I wasted so much time trying to get multiple sqlite queries running at the same time

ju-st··on We will never have enough software developers (2020)
> highest paid software positions in Germany are non-union jobs

How does one identify a well paying non-union employer? Noname companies in almost all cases pay much less than union employers.

ju-st··on Telegram has released user data to German Feds in multiple cases
I think you missed the first paragraph:

The operators of the messenger app Telegram have handed over user data to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) in several cases - contrary to what has been publicly reported so far. According to SPIEGEL information, this involved data on suspects in the areas of child abuse and terrorism. In the case of violations of other criminal offences, it is still difficult for German investigators to obtain information from Telegram, according to security circles.
