jtokoph··on Pirating the Pirates
I’m guessing parts that weren’t in the books
jtokoph··on Show HN: Snapdrop: Instantly share files between devices. No setup, no signup
It seems to be the original developer relaunching. Here is an old show HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10791403
jtokoph··on Show HN: Pull every comment out of a Google Sheet, in the browser
Comments on Google documents have always annoyed me. Resolved threads disappear into the ether. Intermediate comments are hidden, so you always need to dig for context.

UX for collaborative documents needs some innovation but Google has no incentive.

I appreciate this work you’re doing

jtokoph··on US police fear Meta smart glasses could be used to secretly record them
The article can be 100% written by the Guardian but with a seed planted by a “leak” from Meta.
jtokoph··on Please consider running a NTP server in the NTP Pool
It needs to be an IP so it can be one of the “A” records returned by dns lookups of pool.ntp.org.
jtokoph··on Please consider running a NTP server in the NTP Pool
You just use a subset of the other known good nodes in the pool as your source. You’re just acting as an edge node for load distribution
jtokoph··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
It’s also enabled by default now if I remember correctly.
jtokoph··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
My previous org’s GHE went down all the time. It couldn’t handle the CI and automation tooling hitting it as often as an org of our size needed it to. So I can totally see cloud not being able to handle the new AI scale
jtokoph··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
Isn’t there confusion here between independent contractors and subcontractors?

Amazon is subcontracting out delivery to smaller companies, for example ACME Logistics, LLC. Amazon tells ACME when things need to be delivered. ACME then hires delivery drivers, whether the individuals in vests are full-time/part-time/1099 independent is another thing. I doubt Amazon is hiring any 1099 workers directly, but I could be wrong.

jtokoph··on Illinois just passed a law that puts Linux on the hook for age verification
How old is the root user? How about the nginx user? How about “nobody”?
jtokoph··on Cancelling Cursor
I still like to code a lot "by hand" but appreciate the AI based auto-complete/tab completion. What are folks using these days instead of Cursor in that respect? VSCode + Copilot?
jtokoph··on Australia's social media ban has failed
Won’t kids just make a new secret account that doesn’t belong to the family? Like you said, they will do it anyway
jtokoph··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
The most evil part of this is that drivers have been conditioned to click on these “surprise waiting for you” notifications. BMW usually had fairly cute holiday animations that were a fun surprise. I actually looked forward to them until I got bamboozled by this one…
jtokoph··on Female US rower completes historic solo journey from California to Hawaii
I always assumed it was because they had storm resistant cabins for sleeping and supply storage.

Daily use boats probably don’t need as much in that respect.

jtokoph··on OpenWrt One – Open Hardware Router
200 horsepower vehicles are also obsolete. Any modern car should have 500 horsepower with the braking and safety systems to back it up.
jtokoph··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
My first thought is that it would be the very successful YouTubers that get approached by hollywood. And those people are already doing well for themselves independently and would most likely not want to move to the corporate culture without creative control.
jtokoph··on The Power of a Free Popsicle (2018)
I was once gifted a $100 bottle of alcohol after a project finished. I don’t drink much booze. I would have rather had the $100.

It very much depends on the gift.

jtokoph··on The map that keeps Burning Man honest
I think that’s how many were actually found over the limited testing areas. You would need to multiply by the testing area ratio
jtokoph··on Show HN: Built a daily game where you sort historical events chronologically
Most people share their result with friends and family in text threads. It’s for fun and starts discussions, many times out of a solution being surprising or tough. The best times are when one of us can’t figure out a solution and we give each other hints.
jtokoph··on Vercel April 2026 security incident
This announcement in its current form is quite useless and not actionable. As least people won’t be able to say “why didn’t you say something sooner?” They said _something_
jtokoph··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
Great point. We’re about to get a wave of Apple Products with “Apple Intelligence” in a similar way.
jtokoph··on GitHub appears to be struggling with measly three nines availability
Pretty soon, the only 9 they’re going to have is the 9 8s…
jtokoph··on The next fight over the use of facial recognition could be in the supermarkets
In California, the pharmacy computer queries some state database to log the purchase and get approval. If you buy too much too quickly your purchase will be blocked.

My closest pharmacy “loses its connection to the system” frequently which results in them being unable to sell me the medicine. The computer will refuse to ring it up.

jtokoph··on Hammerspoon
My external mechanical keyboard doesn’t have media keys.
jtokoph··on Meta planning layoffs as AI costs mount: Reuters
The original reporting as mentioned in the title: https://www.reuters.com/business/world-at-work/meta-planning...
jtokoph··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
I agree. Apple may even replace out of warranty
jtokoph··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
This makes Asahi Linux so valuable to me. I'll just move to linux on my M2 Max when MacOS drops support.
jtokoph··on Switch to Claude without starting over
I've told the LLMs that, when traveling, I don't care about nightlife and alcohol. Because they have a memory of this, when I ask for a sample itinerary for a 2 day stay in a new city, it won't waste hours in the day on the party street, wine tasting, etc.

For example, instead of recommending a popular night club, it will recommend the stroll along the river to view the lit up skyline or to visit the night market instead.

It knows other preferences as well (exploring quirky neighborhoods, trying local fast food joints and markets)

jtokoph··on Layoffs at Block
One day there will be a CEO who actually pays the severances out of their own compensation.
jtokoph··on Algolia Hacker News Search GitHub Project Archived
Both HN clients that I use are failing to load/update. I think they both pull data from the Algolia search endpoints.
