It’s very hard to prove, yes. But you need to deal with the association with SDAM, and the differences in outcomes on the https://aphantasia.com/study/vviq.
jtbayly··on GLM-5.3-Flash
I’ve got a bunch of sites that can be viewed from (checks notes) the internet. If people in Europe don’t like that, they can block it, or choose not to visit it. In the meantime, you’ve proven exactly what I first said, which is that they are claiming it applies worldwide. Here I am, just putting a site on the internet, and you’re telling me I have to follow EU laws concerning it. Nope. I don’t.
jtbayly··on GLM-5.3-Flash
They obviously don’t have a valid claim to be able to tell everyone who wants to put a website on the internet that they have to do it the EU way, which is what we’re actually talking about.
jtbayly··on GLM-5.3-Flash
That’s pretty funny to say when the EU claims GDPR applies worldwide.
jtbayly··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
Makes sense. I am still getting a feel for the different levels of these processors.
jtbayly··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
It’s not obvious to me. It’s somewhat surprising, even, given the specs I just looked up:

M1 Max: 400 GB/s memory bandwidth, ~20.8 FP16 Tflops

M4 Pro: 273 GB/s memory bandwidth ~17.2 FP16 Tflops

So no matter what they do, you blame them? If they pay not enough, they are bad, if they pay enough, they are also bad. Ok.
jtbayly··on Qwen 3.8-Flash-Next releasing tomorrow (125B a6B)
You got me curious so I looked up the previous chips[0].

Memory bandwidth M1: 68 GB/s M2: 100 GB/s (47% increase) M3: 100 GB/s (0% increase) M4: 120 GB/s (20% increase) M5: 153 GB/s (27.5% increase)

So, M6: 170 GB/s (11% increase) doesn’t seem impossible, though I would have expected more.

jtbayly··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
Hide My Email already uses plain old @iCloud.com as the domain.

They are not changing the subdomain. There isn’t one. The announcement is they are leaving it as-is.

The email addresses for sign-in with Apple do use the @private.iCloud.com subdomain, but again, that’s not a change.

With the memory shortage, many places you can’t buy most models on the spot. Wait times are almost two months for some machines right now.

jtbayly··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
You act like I’m an idiot. It was cancelled immediately when ACA was passed, and I couldn’t afford the new plans the same year.

My point about the current plans is that if you want to call them a “scam” because they are high deductible, you have to call almost all current plans scams.

jtbayly··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
It was a high deductible insurance plan, not a monthly subscription to all your healthcare needs. Why would you call that a “scam”?

And for the record, it was not as high a deductible as most “silver” plans on the exchange currently.

jtbayly··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
The plan was cancelled because of ACA requirements. I had had it for several years prior. Yes, plans change, but this was different.

Especially when the buyer and seller are the same huge monopoly entity, but the payer is “somebody else,” the incentives are completely perverse.

I lost my individual healthcare plan, and I couldn’t afford the new ones. Remember when they said you could keep your plan? Yeah, that’s the one I lost.

Wow. My comment is auto-collapsed. I'm not aware of this phenomenon on HN. Is it a moderation thing? It hasn't been downvoted. I don't think I've been shadow-banned or had this comment flagged or anything.

Anyway, to answer your question, I was pointing out that the request for "important knowledge and moral lessons that larger society needs" and "communicating solutions to how to live as a human" as well as lamenting that "We are adrift without instructions" is actually a request for religion. Religion is how to make sense of how to live. So the comment is asking for religion and rejecting religion at the same time.

At the same time, I was pointing out that one religion in particular has directly addressed the point that "writing is not the goal." The "word"—or "logos" in the greek—is the reason, the logic, the rational principle of the cosmos behind the words. It points to that need for a solution for how to live, as well as showing there is a real answer.
