jstrate··on Ask HN: What IRC channels does everyone find interesting?
#clojure on freenode
jstrate··on Richard Stallman response to Boston Police efforts
I didn't really hear about any responses to law enforcement entering homes. If they were sweeping the area did anyone refuse entry?

Also really looking forward to the knee-jerk anti 2nd ammendment lobby using another tragedy as a prop.

jstrate··on Live map of SF MUNI
I guess this gives nice visualization to the deplorable state of Muni. Right now I see nine L trains clustered basically on top of each other in the Sunset.

Maybe one between market and West Portal and one on market near Embarcadero. I take the J and as usual I see independent cars running outbound right next to each other with unusually large and sporadic gaps between them.

Hard to believe $820 million for such a shitty service.

jstrate··on Join the tech community in passing immigration reform
Where do these assholes get off on speaking for the entire "tech community"? As far as I can tell there are a few website developers and vc partners on the founder list.
jstrate··on Don't be mean, it's stupid
https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/12/23/75

I reckon this is 'mean and a waste of space' then?

jstrate··on Don't be mean, it's stupid
Not much to this post for being on the front page, I guess I'll follow up with grow some thick skin. It's stupid not to.
jstrate··on SpaceX’s entry into $70 billion U.S. launch market draws Lockheed jab
I suppose the point I'm making is to the general sentiment I'm seeing in this thread. It will take better than a 50% success rate of putting satellites into orbit before Lockheed starts thinking about the huge disruption I keep hearing about on this website. If you were to put a billion dollar satellite into orbit who would you choose?
jstrate··on SpaceX’s entry into $70 billion U.S. launch market draws Lockheed jab
Launching a multi-billion dollar satellite is a different than a hello world rails application. The ULA record of successfully putting dozens of satellites into the _correct_ orbit is important here. Which I don't even think SpaceX has done yet.
jstrate··on How to Download Your Instagram Photos and Kill Your Account
There are also free services to migrate your photos to dropbox, drive, etc.

Full disclosure and shameless plug, I work for one. pi.pe

jstrate··on [dead]
It's not free.
jstrate··on On facing two years for protesting Stop-and-Frisk
I'd like to know how many of these stop-and-frisk cases result in discovery of a crime.
jstrate··on Why Don’t Americans Elect Scientists?
>He is arguing against putting scientists in government because the Nazis had scientists.

This doesn't comment does not merit a response, but no he is not.

jstrate··on DeveloperAuction gets developers paid what they're worth
>"DeveloperAuction says it is accepting applications from developers with “notable GitHub profiles,” CS degrees from Stanford or MIT or currently employed at Google, Zynga, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, Yelp and Square"

>"We help developers get paid what they’re worth through a competitive process,"

Only if worth is exclusively dependent on Academic Pedigree. Or having worked at a large corporation that relies on a consumer product. Seems to me it's a pretty limited service.

jstrate··on 'The Golden Age of Silicon Valley Is Over, and We're Dancing on its Grave'
I see a lot of comments addressed to "this guy" referring to Steve Blank. Let's not forget he's been involved in silicon valley startups since the 70s, including founding semiconductor companies. While they're no hello world rails startup, he has a proven track record and a first-hand experience of how the valley has evolved.

I suspect many of you haven't seen his take on the history of the valley, which might give context to his views.

jstrate··on Facebook Just Bowed Out of the Check In War With Foursquare
How about a conference? Music festival? I was at Outside Lands in GG park a few weekends ago and (given the price of a 3-day pass was $200) there were plenty of location aware smartphones used by ~60k people.
jstrate··on [dead]
I've lived in the Bay Area for ~24 years and I've actually felt maybe 4. I'd hardly call that often.
jstrate··on Should employers be blind to private beliefs? (Richard Dawkins)
I agree that science and faith are theoretically compatible, but you intentionally omit that they have been compatible in practice for hundreds of years.

I would say that the evidence that they are compatible is overwhelming: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_thinkers_in_s...

jstrate··on Apple drops Consumer Reports/iPhone 4 discussion threads
For some reason Apple spawns the opposite of such hatred. Zealous apple fans stand in lines for days to purchase products, I think some of the hatred is directed at that behavior. Back on topic though, some people just haven't drank the kool-aid and want to discuss problems in a support forum. I don't see this forum moderation as an issue, as it seems only disruptive threads that didn't address problems were deleted.
