jstrate··on Ask HN: What SaaS or apps are you paying for?
I pay for Charles Proxy, Digitalocean(droplets), and Netflix.
jstrate··on Bugger: Maybe spies aren't very good at their jobs (2013)
The assertion the author makes about the revelations of Snowden is incorrect. The author hasn't done their homework. Further, if you'd like to know about the history of the technical ability of spies, and how the information gathered was processed check out the book referenced, written by an actual historian.
jstrate··on Bugger: Maybe spies aren't very good at their jobs (2013)
Silly article, the revelations of Edward Snowden shouldn't really tell anyone much about the capability of spies, nothing we didn't already know. If you're interested in a good book about the technical history of the CIA check out 'The Wizards of Langley'. It gives a pretty accurate history of the technical ability of spies throughout the years, and the bureaucracy which limited them. https://www.amazon.com/Wizards-Langley-Directorate-Science-T...
jstrate··on Emacs is sexy
I'm surprised the article doesn't also mention the theme gallery here: https://pawelbx.github.io/emacs-theme-gallery/ I actually used it yesterday and am currently using the heroku theme(coming from zenburn for a few years).
jstrate··on New Zealand Will Give You a Free Trip If You Agree to a Job Interview
As an fyi to the folks developing this website and those thinking about signing up, I refreshed the page while logged in under my account and it loaded a different account. I have screenshots and other information to pass along if you give an email.
jstrate··on NASA’s new WB-57F (high-altitude aircraft) flies for the first time in 41 years
Looks like it flew yesterday https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/n927na#988ff01
jstrate··on US Senate Report on CIA Detention and Interrogation Program
Can you really not make a distinction between cold shower and televised beheading/castration. I agree there is something very wrong with this country if that is the case. I've spent enough Karma today.
jstrate··on US Senate Report on CIA Detention and Interrogation Program
Read almost half of it today and nothing really surprising. Still waiting for the Taliban, Al Qaida, and IS interrogation program reports though.
jstrate··on A foodie repents
"from an environmental point of view, density is good." The author is confident enough to gloss over this which makes me skeptical of his conclusions about any large scale impact of the 'foodie' movement.
jstrate··on Employee Equity
This is speculation but wont be hiring engineers until I can pay for it. I'd take a bonus instead of equity but I would rather the employee decide.
jstrate··on Employee Equity
I've worked at two startups, including one YC. Both were acquired by larger tech companies. I was employee #3 at one and rebuilt most of a broken codebase in the other. I got nothing out of either WRT options. I agree with the author on point 4 but I don't think more options are the answer, I should have just asked for a higher salary I would have been better off. Startup-bucks are even worse than a lottery ticket, because of tax complications and money required to cover strike price.

Now I work at a large tech company in SV and wont be involved in another startup unless I'm a founder.

jstrate··on Female Computer Scientists Make the Same Salary as Their Male Counterparts
Nice ageist stereotype. But that's alright for you to do right?
jstrate··on Governments admit to faking terrorism: a list
I wonder what this list would look like in comparison with a list of legitimate acts of terrorism. Hint: it would look pretty insignificant.
jstrate··on Bruce Sterling: Internet (1993)
>good things occaisionally come

Understatement of the century.

jstrate··on Bruce Sterling: Internet (1993)
I'm surprised articles like this are still posted on HN/reddit. Like most of the tech you use on your iWidgets it has deep roots in the US defense budget. Networks, GPS, digital maps, etc. Surprising this is posted here as it doesn't fit with most of the evil military industrial complex narrative that comes with linked articles.
jstrate··on Why I Stick with the Linux Desktop
The middle click paste really hit home for me. I recently started working at a mostly Apple Big Co. And the middle click paste is sorely missed. Maybe I can find some equivalent but I always just took it for granted.
jstrate··on Edward Snowden, The N.S.A. Leaker, Comes Forward
It wasn't intended to be pejorative I honestly want to know how these people passed whatever tests are required to maintain the United States secrets.

jstrate··on Edward Snowden, The N.S.A. Leaker, Comes Forward
I'm surprised the NSA/government agencies trust people like him and Manning with the nation's secrets. Based on what I've read he doesn't sound like the most rigorous individual. And Bradley Manning, childhood trauma and seriously questionable life decisions. Isn't this what the purpose of a security clearance is?
jstrate··on Thousands of Istanbul citizens walking to protest government
Certainly possible, she said Gezi park which I had heard come up so I just assumed.
jstrate··on Thousands of Istanbul citizens walking to protest government
My girlfriend is vacationing in Turkey and in Istanbul currently. I spoke with her last night and asked what was going on, she said a small amount of people were protesting trees being removed from a park. She said she believed it was a little more than that but nothing very extreme. It was interesting to hear her view after seeing it and then read the reddit/hn talk of government overthrow, rampant police brutality, and revolutions. I suppose it will be interesting to see what happens. And then uninteresting to see how few of these comments are relevant.
jstrate··on Coinbase Leads Charge In Bitcoin’s Consumerization
I've had this problem and have stopped using them. Since then I've been using localbitcoins and that's been fine. It's surprising to me that after $5 million in investment they are unable to figure out transactions.
jstrate··on Why People Hate the Google Bus
You know what would be even better for traffic and the environment? If Google employees didn't live fifty miles from their Mountain View offices.
jstrate··on U.S. Directly Blames China’s Military for Cyberattacks
>When the United States mounted its cyberattacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities

Stuxnet? I wasn't aware there was any definitive proof it was the US.

jstrate··on Manchester City Council
I'd prefer most government sites not designed at all, rather apis. And for whatever sites actually needed user input, etc just a header and form tag will suffice. I'm also in the minority which finds most modern web design intrusive. I want to use the service, not look at your art project.
jstrate··on Florida Teen Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad
> rushed to judgement

I suppose based on the fact the kid mixed chemicals and sealed the chamber? I've done the same, multiple times. Never was I surprised at the result.

I suppose OP could be correct and my racist views led me to believe her intentions were the same as mine when it was me mixing chemicals and sealing the chamber, somehow I doubt it.

jstrate··on Florida Teen Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad
Nowhere did I compare the two. Simply stating that event is very recent and would have an impact on the perception of the child making an explosive.

What is ignorant is the fact that reddit/hn is willing to completely ignore the fact that the intent was to mix chemicals and make an explosive device. Ask any school administrator if a student of any race would be punished for that.

Look at it from an administrators perspective, they are legally obligated to maintain a safe environment for children. If another student was injured it would be their job/income/family on the line.

jstrate··on Florida Teen Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad
The intent of opening and consuming a champagne bottle is different from the intent of mixing explosive chemicals in a sealed chamber, at a public school. I imagine if a child brought a champagne bottle to a school cafeteria, shook it up and threw it there would be significant consequences as well. Regardless of race.
jstrate··on Florida Teen Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad
Oh please, household chemicals have serious potential to react violently. Her intention was clearly to make something go bang. She was punished for it, maybe excessively, but immediately claiming racism is ridiculous.
jstrate··on Florida Teen Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad
Immediately citing racism as the reason for her punishment isn't grasping at straws, it's ignorant.

Did you read the part where she was creating _explosives_ on school property? Especially within two weeks of a major bombing involving household materials!?

jstrate··on Why aren’t younger Americans driving anymore?
I don't understand the "driving sucks, regardless of circumstances" mentality. Automobiles increase quality of life, along with practical range.

"My wife doesn't even have a license anymore. It's incredibly liberating." Really?

"I seriously wanted to kill people." Really?
