Fascinating article. I wonder how the next decade will compare to when the Big 4 played. Tennis is now doing a three year trial of guaranteed baseline earnings but only for the top 250 (https://www.atptour.com/en/news/baseline-december-2024).
This is sad to read as someone who only recently started appreciating Wong Kar Wai films and wants to visit. Although I have been reading about the speech/thought suppression and creative exodus for a long time.
This was much better to read than typical annual letters. I'm not in this space at all so the examples were interesting and helped me appreciate the complexity of the business.
This is but one symptom of a larger curriculum disease being inflicted on schools across the country. "Just" providing a digital alternative to the book doesn't solve the root problem.
Ok so is a Moka pot for making coffee in the North American sense (drip coffee), or espresso (even if it is not at as high pressure), or something in between? I do pour overs daily and have never used a moka pot.
Well said, that last bit especially. The regulations on medical devices are on how the manufacturer markets it. Should be the same for driving technology.
I don't know NYC rent control policies but my experience with it in Berkeley was excellent. I negotiated down (in 2010) to $945/mo. After 5 years of rent controlled increases I was still paying less than $1,050/mo. In the same time, the identical next door apartment (new tenant) rented for $2150. When I left, my unit was rented out for $2,500/mo. Professional management company, owner lived on other side of the country, old but everything worked and they always fixed anything that came up. I'm realizing now that you are talking about affordable housing while this was open market but wanted to comment on the power and usefulness of rent control.
Property. When you buy something it’s yours and you can give it to who you want. Want to gift a movie ten years from now to a friend or heir? Good luck.
Personally, I'm finding the transition from Slack to Teams absolutely maddening. Do people actually prefer Teams or is it that many large enterprises already had Office 365 licenses?
I've only driven Tesla's for short amounts of time. What is the comfort level on longer trips both seat and road noise/bumps, etc? Are the suspensions pretty comfortable?
As someone who has been on both sides, it amuses me to see programmers (many who could not be called engineers), reduce non-programming roles to sending emails and having meetings. There are absolutely some people who frustratingly cannot do any work on their own without a meeting - they are mostly good at guiding a group and making sure communication and progress is happening. However, there are SO MANY skills and functions outside of programming that go into building the right thing the right way at the right time. Costco doesn't beat Sams with more engineering, they did it with strategy.
What always surprises me in discussions on this topic is that many (seemingly) Chinese-origin commenters are bewildered that anyone opposes China's behavior. They've fully bought into the CCP narrative that the Govt is merely making the best decision for a lazy and unproductive people. Stripping people of the ability to choose their identity, stripping them of freedom of thought, stripping them of language and culture, stripping them of choice itself because their primary purpose is industrial output is wrong. I have no illusions that outside forces will change China's practices, but I don't see how they build a harmonious and prosperous society long term while doing what they're doing to large chunks of their population. So much of western innovation is based on immigrants ability to leave repressive govts for freedom of thought and practice. Will China ever be able to move from copying IP and manufacturing for others into inventing for itself?
I like the concept. It reminds me of city-wide scavenger hunts/challenges in college that helped me learn a new city. Maybe that's one activity where a local/focused version would come in handy.
