jsjohnst··on Windows on ARM Is Here to Stay
It’s amazing to me how little folks dig into the actual data of the test results used to make these “headline” claims. As is always the case, there’s some serious cherry picking of stats and a ton of apples to oranges comparisons.
jsjohnst··on Google DeepMind shifts from research lab to AI product factory
Just because a company is 99% one thing, doesn’t mean that the 1% remaining don’t have moments of real genius. What it does mean however is that when those real genius moments happen, the company isn’t in a good position to capitalize on it (ala Xerox or Kodak mentioned previously, but there are so many more).
jsjohnst··on The Backrooms of the Internet Archive
The photo was taken in the early 2000s though!
jsjohnst··on LSP-AI: open-source language server serving as back end for AI code assistance
Awesome, thanks for the pointer to get me jump started!
jsjohnst··on The Backrooms of the Internet Archive
My guess is because the image didn’t exist in other archives and it’s a very obscure site so why would someone have seen that? More probable they stumbled on something random like this in the wild or on Internet Archive?
jsjohnst··on LSP-AI: open-source language server serving as back end for AI code assistance
Curious how this compares to the locally run AI code assistance that Jetbrains has added to their products. I’ve found it to be pretty good for what I want (which is very minimal assistance), it’s just a bit too eager to suggest code sometimes.
jsjohnst··on The Backrooms of the Internet Archive
I remember seeing this before. Curious how / who found the original in the Wayback archives? Didn’t see that mentioned in the article.
jsjohnst··on Strange File Resizing on DOS
Hadn’t heard this tidbit before, but it’s definitely on brand for most other things developed in the early Microsoft era. Significant portions were heavily inspired by prior work in most cases, with some outright copied or acquired from the original source.
jsjohnst··on South Pole Water Infrastructure
Little surprised that there aren’t contamination concerns with pumping waste water back into the snow pack. I guess at -60° it doesn’t travel far, but still.
jsjohnst··on Generative AI Handbook: A Roadmap for Learning Resources
It’s definitely an awesome resource after digging into it, very glad you’ve shared!

Like GP, at first it seemed potentially a bit shallow when skimming before I realized the format. Naming things is always hard. Somebody else mentioned “dictionary”, but dictionaries aren’t linear/sequential building upon prior content like you have. Honestly I probably wouldn’t worry about it to much, it either works for someone or it doesn’t.

Anybody have the tl;dr on the contents of the documents?
jsjohnst··on Generative AI Handbook: A Roadmap for Learning Resources
Seems you aren’t wrong. It does link to a lot of external resources that look good though.

Makes me wonder if they should’ve avoided naming things like “chapters” as it sets the wrong expectations.

> It was seen as the responsibility of the leader to bring wealth to his followers in exchange for their loyalty and courage.

Replace the word wealth with prosperity and the same applies for your later example. The leader is just someone you can’t see, touch, or hear so is harder to displace.

jsjohnst··on What kind of bug would make machine learning suddenly 40% worse at NetHack?
> how would the model know what this unexpected message means? It would probably just ignore it and continue playing as normal.

Then that’s a poor model then. Significant anomalies should be flagged for manual review, otherwise you corrupt datasets unintentionally.

jsjohnst··on What kind of bug would make machine learning suddenly 40% worse at NetHack?
As another commenter said, it’s quite obvious about it. For such a key difference, I’d think they’d have the model run record a log for later inspection. Or they’d be watching the game play. Or something similar.
jsjohnst··on Is It Time to Stop Filming Strangers in Public?
I think a reasonable outcome would be to make a distinction between incidental recording (I have a camera recording Times Square and happen to pass you) as opposed to direct recording (as in you are the subject of what I’m recording). It’s definitely a grey area still, but would help if we want to apply limits on this type of content.
jsjohnst··on What kind of bug would make machine learning suddenly 40% worse at NetHack?
Interesting story, if maybe a bit oversold. Since the game apparently announces this (didn’t know that), shouldn’t the model have detected a significant difference during the gameplay?
jsjohnst··on How many photons are received per bit transmitted from Voyager 1?
Didn’t realize the math would be that straightforward. Is there something the author isn’t taking into account or is that a decent plausible range?
jsjohnst··on Kino: Pro Video Camera
Personally, for the tiny amount I paid back in 2017 for the app, $59.99 one time now is cheap to me. That’s under $1/month over that time which is well worth it to me. If I got “locked out” if I stopped paying, then I’d feel different, but that isn’t the case so keep up the good work!
jsjohnst··on Kino: Pro Video Camera
I’ve been a Halide customer since the first week it was released. I’ve gotten numerous updates since and not been locked out of anything available when I purchased (and including many new things since too) without having to pay another dime. In fact, the app has never even mentioned the option to subscribe, I only learned of that option via this thread and found it buried deep in settings. I value their work, so I’ll now pay as I heavily use the app (among other of their products), but to say I’ve been forced to and/or “locked out” is dare I say grossly inaccurate at best.
jsjohnst··on Corn fields occupy how much of each state?
Among the issues reported by other comments, those over index for the size of the state. Nebraska produces close to twice as much corn as Indiana for example, it’s just a much larger state.

For those looking for concrete data:

Iowa: 13.1M acres

Illinois: 11.2M acres

Nebraska: 9.95M acres

Minnesota: 8.6M acres

Indiana: 5.45M acres

Ohio: 4.75M acres

> Funny to see myself being downvoted for a harmless call for a reason

You made a critical snarky dismissal comment, what did you expect?

Might I suggest reviewing: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

Here’s a couple to specifically call out:

1. Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something.

2. Please don't comment about the voting on comments. It never does any good, and it makes boring reading.

> reality should know that someone can obtain any of your property

There you go, was that so hard?

Bitcoin isn’t some magical panacea, the reality is it’s as easily stolen/taken/lost in 99% of cases as anything else.

Sure, there might be some ultra tiny percentage of folks who are truly secure with it, but there is virtually the _same_ number who are ultra secure with other non-bitcoin stored value systems.

Respectfully, disagree completely. Like somebody else stated, clicking in the Arabian Sea just to the west of India neatly splits the two circles without cutting continents. One circle becomes Africa / Europe / Asia / Australia, the other becomes North & South America.

> You don't have that option with digital fiat, even if you wanted to.

Yes, you could, you just need to acquire the digital fiat anonymously through one of many methods. Then burn all record of it and watch your money disappear the same way as taking it to the grave, just no death required. Or go ahead and die if you must, but you’ll still not prove that Bitcoin is any different or any less “takeable”.

> Is there any way to enforce that in a way that can't be worked around with a shim?

You can’t definitively prove something was written in Objective-C or Swift, but you can often definitively prove something was not written in either pretty easily just by looking at the assembly.

That’s the very definition of “taken” isn’t it?
