jsdevtom··on What reversing, modernising old games tells us about the economic impact of AI
Ai slop
jsdevtom··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
The fact that these bureaucrats think they have a right to add age-verification to information is ludicrous in the first place. This should be as much non-news as 'Lawmakers unanimously decide death is legal'.
jsdevtom··on Canceling "Hey"
The article says:

> You do not need to deport all of them to deport the ones who "take over public spaces".

And continues to assume that DHH is talking about mass deportation. He's not. He says:

> When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them.

He's not saying we should deport _all_ gypsies just because one group is taking over public space.

jsdevtom··on FBI used iPhone notification data to retrieve deleted Signal messages
If I have access to the UI, I don't need to break your encryption.
jsdevtom··on Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
Today I learned for the 7th time, never to go with Godaddy.
jsdevtom··on Astro 1.0 – a web framework for building fast, content-focused websites
We've built multiple websites with Astro.js, including customer facing ones such as bustinger.com, and love it.

Simple to use, blazing fast results. JSX. Use another framework you like inside it (e.g. React, svelte).

Thanks, we couldn't stand by idly any longer while people are getting scammed out of their life savings.
jsdevtom··on Ask HN: I'm in a rut. How did you get out of yours?
Take on more responsibility. Specifically say yes to something you want to do but are scared of. Like starting a business or getting a dog.
jsdevtom··on Don't use Kubernetes yet
What about if you need rolling deployments?
jsdevtom··on Ask HN: Why do various new accounts keep getting blocked?
I really have no idea what could even make sense. The cause I consider most likely is that they have a bias toward blocking new accounts, and only if you do display certain behaviours, will they not block you.
jsdevtom··on Ask HN: Why do various new accounts keep getting blocked?
Thank you!
jsdevtom··on Ask HN: Why do various new accounts keep getting blocked?
I went out of my way to turn it off before logging on to those sites. I thought it could also be because I religiously remove my cookies.
jsdevtom··on Ask HN: Why do various new accounts keep getting blocked?
What about young people who are new to the internet? Should we increase the cost of entry (or just flat out ban it) for them too for their lack of online reputation?
jsdevtom··on Ask HN: Important nonobvious startup/business lessons you've learned?
Market before you build.
jsdevtom··on Ask HN: How to Make Passive Income?
I would change this to:

1. Find a profitable niche 2. See if you could market to said niche in a way where you have an unfair advantage. 3. If yes to 2, market and sell the product before you have it to ensure demand 4. Build the product.

jsdevtom··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
All these arguments about school times etc. My code would be eternally ridiculed if I mocked the Date object to artificially change the time, instead changing the time school started for certain months.
jsdevtom··on Open letter from the BMJ to Mark Zuckerberg
While I agree with you for the most part, their responsibility should not be fact checking. That should be left to the individual.
jsdevtom··on Launch HN: Slip (YC S21) – Build and sell interactive programming courses
Good idea. Please consider generating websites from the courses to allow people to "white label" this. Alternatively, offer iframes or an api - a kind of headless CMS. This would allow course creators to feel comfortable not being so locked in.
jsdevtom··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
Thank you. The majority in this thread seem to assume a higher net effect in preventing the spread through vaccination than is really the case.
jsdevtom··on How the UK's online safety bill threatens Matrix
The current UK politicians are so mind numbingly naive in so many ways.

jsdevtom··on Signal server no longer open source (German)
Here, I translated it with DeepL:

Signal server no longer open source For almost a year, the public code of the Signal server has not been updated - the servers are running a different version.

Article by Hanno Böck published on April 6, 2021, 8:58 a.m.

The encryption at Signal is top, but for some time now the server-side code is no longer publicly available - and Signal doesn't like to talk about it.

Last modified on April 22, 2020 - that's the current status in the Git repository of the server code for the encrypted messenger Signal. Apparently, Signal has decided not to publish future changes to the server-side code. This has not been officially announced, and inquiries are not answered.

Signal is considered the gold standard in encrypted communication. The protocol implements end-to-end encryption, which is considered exemplary and has been reviewed by cryptographers many times. The source code of the messenger is publicly available and is under a free license; anyone can examine it and modify it if necessary.

The code of the Signal clients is still available What is still true for the client apps has not been true for Signal's server-side code for some time. The code published on Github no longer receives updates, while Signal's servers are running a newer version.

On Signal's official forum, a user asked about the current server code back in June 2020. A lengthy discussion thread followed. Already in the past, there were periods when Signal's publicly available server code was released with delays. But the repository has never been orphaned for as long as it is now.

Many users prefer open source software, and the reasons are many. It is hoped that the code can be examined by independent people, security holes or backdoors can be found more easily. Another important aspect is the possibility of a fork: if a project develops in a direction that is not supported by users, others can take the code and develop it further themselves.

The fact that Signal's code is open source has contributed a lot to the messenger's good reputation, and Signal advertises this itself. For example, the Signal website currently features a quote from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who emphasizes that he trusts Signal because it is "open source, peer-reviewed, and funded solely by grants and donations."

Because Signal is end-to-end encrypted, security does not depend on server code. The client is still open source and can be peer-reviewed. Nevertheless, the server code, which is no longer open, is not without consequences. For example, it is no longer possible to run your own Signal server or fork the entire system.

Signal is silent about the reasons It is remarkable that Signal does not explain its step. None of the user questions in Signal's forum and on Github were answered by members of the Signal team. Golem.de checked with Signal's press office and also received no response.

"I think the Signal team should at least tell us why the server repo is currently not updated," writes a user on Github - and he is obviously not alone with this opinion.

jsdevtom··on The Fed Will Buy Bond ETFs Now
Printing money is, by definition inflation. Printing money in to the hands of people who spend it is stealing from savers. Effectively discouraging responsible financial decisions in favour of lending.
jsdevtom··on The Fed Will Buy Bond ETFs Now
This will just inflate the everything bubble further than it has ever gone before. Terrible news.
jsdevtom··on Ask HN: How to find work while homeless?
Homeless shelters often offer the homeless an address. Use this address to get a bank account (you may have to go in to a few branches to find one who accepts the homeless shelter address). Now walk around town and ask for a job in every restaurant/ Cafe/ whatever and give them your CV and ask if they have any jobs. As long as you are smartly dressed and smell fine, you should be able to find a job. Try not to do illegal work - it's often a scam. Shave in the local library with disposable razors when there are hardly any people there. Use this time to wash as well. Now, the bank may need an employers wage slip. Explain to the employer that you need a letter from them for the bank in order to open a bank account stating that you will be working for them soon. Give this letter to the bank. This often works. Try to tell as few people as possible that you are homeless. You will probably have to improvise on these steps. Most importantly and the hardest: remove the victim's mentallity. You are breathing, appreciate everything that you can, even adversity. Nothing is wrong with you. You will look back on this time in the future and be grateful for this. Without it you would not be as strong as you are going to be.
jsdevtom··on Spaced Repetition
Thanks tashi. Great point!
jsdevtom··on Spaced Repetition
I built splearn.io to learn faster myself through spaced repetition learning. Anyone can log in and use it 100% free though. It has offline sync and text to speech for spelling. It only uses active recall (actually tests you) for maximum efficiency.
