jrubinovitz··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
Hi this is to cover the cost of the non-profit. There's a thing called fiscal sponsorship where you can basically let people use your non-profit status and it's great for kids who want to throw hackathons to not worry about taxes, but hack club still needs to pay for that non-profit status.
jrubinovitz··on Building a Cross-Platform Web and Mobile App from the Ground Up
That's so important when you're shipping at startup speed and it's so tempting to just rush to the next thing. I am going to try this with my next cross platform app.
jrubinovitz··on Building a Cross-Platform Web and Mobile App from the Ground Up
> On mobile, we generate a QR code that can be scanned by a phone running the Ambrook app to download and run the latest Javascript bundle live on the phone.

This is awesome!

jrubinovitz··on How to spin your scientific research out of a university and into a startup
It's very helpful to know you can negotiate with tech transfer offices. I always assumed their (not-go-great) terms were non-negotiable and was super dissuaded against starting something while a researcher at a university.
jrubinovitz··on About CRDTs
what are you working on?
jrubinovitz··on Decapitated Worms Regrow Heads, Keep Old Memories
Traumatic memories are accepted as sometimes being stored in some capacity in human body regions other than the head, I'd be very interested in seeing if this is connected, as research progresses.

jrubinovitz··on Elliptic Curve Cryptography for Beginners
Well done, loved the use of interactive graphics. Curious if you will continue this approach, but for more advanced cryptography, or move on to other things. Would love a more in depth guide to cryptography in this format.
jrubinovitz··on BetterWorks and CEO sued by ex-employee for alleged sexually suggestive assault
Your comment seems to be 100% independent of this accusation.
jrubinovitz··on Ask a Female Engineer: How Can Managers Help Retain Technical Women?
I guess we disagree there.
jrubinovitz··on Ask a Female Engineer: How Can Managers Help Retain Technical Women?
If these are your issues as well, you can join in and help fix them. No one is trying to invalidate your problems; this is a call to action for better engineering management practices.
jrubinovitz··on Stupid hacks from stupidhackathon.se
I think you email them and are not a jerk and have a stupid website and then you have one.

smart organizers, stupid hackathons.

jrubinovitz··on GitHub lost $66M in nine months of 2016
I think it's more that hiring and coddling ~600 white men is really expensive.
jrubinovitz··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
"Why don't we have some politics but discuss it in thoughtful ways? Well, that's exactly what the HN guidelines call for, but it's insufficient to stop people from flaming each other when political conflicts activate the primitive brain. Under such conditions, we become tribal creatures, not intellectually curious ones. We can't be both at the same time."

I think this calls for more moderation so users that can speak civilly and intellectually about politics can do so, not banning speaking of politics entirely. "Conflict activat[ing] the primitive brain" is rather infantilizing, gaslighting, and not true.

jrubinovitz··on Data driven look into the pipeline
I would love to see more companies do this (e.g. via their Slackbot). Real diversity numbers are going to be key in making change.
jrubinovitz··on The Facebook Method of Dealing with Complexity
This is how you discriminate against the minority, quite literally.
jrubinovitz··on Ask Sam Altman anything
Excited to have Sam talking to some younger hackers today.
jrubinovitz··on AWS Loft Program Expands to NYC
Will be interesting to see how the free coworking space works out.
jrubinovitz··on I'm a woman CEO and it doesn't change anything
Isn't Front YCS14? I would love the author to revisit this another year into the company.
jrubinovitz··on Being a single founder with a speech impediment
I also had a stutter and some other speech problems as a child that are pretty much gone, but can flare up when I'm nervous. My solution has been public speaking. Now I'm less nervous when speaking and I know how to handle any stuttering that slips through as gracefully as possible.
jrubinovitz··on Introducing government.github.com
Philadelphia is a great city for open data/open government. There's a Chief Data Officer and a pretty active Code for America brigade.
jrubinovitz··on Fedora 20 Will Be Named Heisenbug
I was really hoping this was a "Breaking Bad" reference (Walter "Heisenberg" White and his fedora).
jrubinovitz··on Psychotherapy via Internet found as good as or better than face-to-face
This is the actual paper documenting the study the article refers to: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165032713...

"Method A total of 62 participants suffering from depression were randomly assigned to the therapist-supported internet-based intervention group (n=32) and to the face-to-face intervention (n=30)."

"Limitations Due to the small sample size, it will be important to evaluate these outcomes in adequately-powered trials."

"Conclusions This study shows that an internet-based intervention for depression is equally beneficial to regular face-to-face therapy. However, more long term efficacy, indicated by continued symptom reduction three months after treatment, could be only be found for the online group. "

They go in depth into the limitations of the study in section 4.1, but in a nutshell the sample size was too small and heterogeneous. I look forward to seeing more research in this area, but one cannot make the claim "Psychotherapy via Internet found as good as or better than face-to-face" just yet.

jrubinovitz··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
Yes, I do not feel comfortable giving this site my HN credentials.
jrubinovitz··on Desktop App for All Your Email
Hmm, I have IMAP enabled and this isn't connecting to my Gmail. Any possible fixes?
jrubinovitz··on How Manpacks boosted their average order size 84% and reduced churn to under 2%
A good friend of mine worked for BirchBox, a subscription beauty service for women and men (Birchbox men), as an intern last summer. From what she told me, the work they did to create a community around the service helps the company beat out gorillas such as Amazon. For instance, people will record themselves opening their Birchbox order and post it on Youtube (do a Youtube search, the top unboxing I get has 57,996 views). I think Manpacks also plays to the community, as evident by them tweeting with the fellow who wanted safety razors.
jrubinovitz··on Hackathon Hacks for Organizers
Please write a blog post. I saw some Michigan hackers at hackNY as well and would love to hear more about the Michigan hackathon tour and where it's taking you guys.
jrubinovitz··on Hackathon Hacks for Organizers
In the past, PennApps organizers went out of the way to cater to my dietary needs (dairy-free), but I think it was too big for that this year. Maybe allergen inclusion on the registration form could have informed organizers on the ratio of different foods they could get?
jrubinovitz··on Watch YC Startup School 2012 Live
"It wasn't about taking over the world, it was about being baller in San Francisco." -Travis Kalanick, Founder of Uber

Sounds like a good starting goal to pursue with a start-up.

I love the design. Did you guys use any framework for the design, or is it all you guys?
jrubinovitz··on Ebay Acquires Svpply
I interned at Skillshare up until late July, and we shared an office space with Svpply. They are a cool bunch of guys and they seemed to be working pretty hard this summer. I wish them the best at Ebay.

Is this the second NYC acquisition by ebay (the other I know of is Hunch)?
