jrs235··on The sordid reality of retirement villages: Residents are being milked for profit
How does that work? If the parents live in a filial state but the children don't?
jrs235··on After getting Jimmy Kimmel suspended, FCC chair threatens ABC's The View
Because Sinclair needs the FCC to approve a merger for them. They read between the lines and know that to get it approved they need to apply pressure on ABC to can Kimmel to appease someone.

I wish the law that restricted the number of public stations/licenses a single entity could own was still in place. It was created to prevent what's happening now, silencing of varied and different ideas, views, and opinions.

jrs235··on Starbucks won't lose cash-strapped customers;its customer service is world-class

jrs235··on "Your" vs. "My" in user interfaces
It might be a bit lengthy and a UI challenge on smaller screens/interfaces but I hate pronouns and unnecessary thinking, I'd prefer Current User Documents (or Current User's Documents) and All Documents. Sometimes I might be logged in as my personal user, sometimes as Admin, sometimes as one of my children. "Your Documents" or "My Documents" makes me hit the brakes in whatever I was trying to do/look for to figure out "who am I" [logged in as].

Edit: Actually it should be "[Username]'s Documents" not "Current User's Documents" otherwise I have to stop to remember who I'm logged in as...

jrs235··on AI Startup Founders Tout a Winning Formula–No Booze, No Sleep, No Fun
Right? Like if one's identity is found in you work and one doesn't step back there's a good chance they think amphetamines are a good thing one should take to stay awake and work more.
jrs235··on Samsung taking market share from Apple in U.S. as foldable phones gain momentum
Noise cancelling is a feature and useful. Airpods? Annoying, I can't tell if the person on the sidewalk is trippin' or talking to someone on the phone via their difficult to see airpods.
jrs235··on Samsung taking market share from Apple in U.S. as foldable phones gain momentum
Personally I think they're ugly. They might have some functional advantage, that I don't know. I believe they're going to be the cyber truck of mobile phones, primarily a status symbol.
jrs235··on They blew up a boat far offshore, killed eleven people, and called it justice
Their only belief is might makes right, power above all other principles.
jrs235··on MAGA declares war on the property tax
I think of it as: You don't own land. You don't buy land. You purchase and own the title to exclusive use of the land that is recognized and protected by the government. That's what one is paying for and typically any additions (real property, i.e. structures) attached to the land. Property taxes (id prefer land tax) are the annual "protection" fees.
jrs235··on U.S. guided-missile cruiser crosses Panama Canal, warships deployed to Venezuela
Now the stupidity and comments around renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War makes more sense. Seems if he can't win a Peace Prize he'll opt for a war one.
jrs235··on Six months into tariffs, businesses have no idea how to price anything
It's part of the plan. Small farms will be the ones to go bankrupt. The large corporate, black rock et al owned, "farms" (read businesses) will be bailed out and allowed to scoop up the little ones for pennies onto the dollar.
jrs235··on US retail giants raise prices due to tariffs
Because their businesses will be targeted and persecuted by the petty administration who demands no dissent.
jrs235··on US retail giants raise prices due to tariffs
When demand destruction (due to lacking discretionary income) occurs...
jrs235··on US retail giants raise prices due to tariffs
>I think tariffs are a regressive tax brought on by the most economically illiterate administration

That's the kind interpretation. The maligned one is they are brought on by those who lust for power and control and realize those come from more wealth and tariffs increase wealth disparity, increasing their percentage of the whole higher even if the pie shrinks.

jrs235··on What is going on right now?
I think I'm good at making inferences from tidbits of information (or so I think) but I don't think I'm good at speaking confidently, other than speaking confidently that I don't know everything.
jrs235··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
Because private for profit prison businesses can make money off them. Public is paying for private profits.
jrs235··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
Pro money/business party wants/needs more people in prison so their private for profit prison businesses can make more money on legal slavery.
jrs235··on Vibe coding creates a bus factor of zero
Interesting. I just posted a similar comment as a sister comment to yours above (at least at the time of reading the thread) to another persons comment about cost of AI code going to zero... Which was basically the same as you believe here.

jrs235··on Vibe coding creates a bus factor of zero
Will the cost of AI-generated code approach zero? I thought the hardware and electricity needed to power and train the models and infer was huge and only growing. Today the free and plus plans might be only $20/month, once moats are built I assume prices will skyrocket a order of magnitude or few higher.
jrs235··on Volkswagen gates a new vehicle's full horsepower behind monthly subscription
I'd like to patent to Edition Display now. I mean if folks are paying for the better performance I'm sure they'd like their LCD Edition Display to show the world they're special! Static edition emblems won't suffice anymore. Oh, and if you stop paying or cancel your subscription, your Edition Display reverts back to saying "Basic" again.
jrs235··on White House in Talks with Intel for 10% U.S. Government Stake
The Republican party is now the party of billionaires, grifters, the dumb, and the duped.
jrs235··on Good system design
In other words they believed in principles other than increasing personal power
jrs235··on Microsoft's latest Windows 11 24H2 update breaks SSDs/HDDs, may corrupt data
Great. So this might be the cause of ally problems. I just happen to cloning drives to swap out with a larger one and Windows 11 is so slow. Also seems there were issues found that needing fixing after cloning.
jrs235··on White House loyalty rating for companies
Sort of. I was still too quick. In the first paragraph you didn't but that's because you were trying to be charitable. Your final sentence brings it full circle.
jrs235··on New executive order puts all grants under political control
But but but American Exceptionalism! Americans are the best and brightest! The rest of the world can't compete! /s

Those doing and supporting what's happening a) care only about power, b) honestly think they and America is superior, c) both and d) think this time is different assuming they are educated and know history.

jrs235··on Claude is the drug, Cursor is the dealer
Wait until their answers steer towards solutions/products via paid promotion... Ugh.
jrs235··on White House loyalty rating for companies
*Trump favors transactions that offer short-term benefits to himself (via maintaining or expanding power or money).

FTFY.

jrs235··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
Thank you. Well said.
jrs235··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
If they are, or consider themselves, libertarian they are royal libertarians (not georgists) and therefore "might makes right" and "live free" means violence. A belief in "four legs good, two legs better".
jrs235··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
Anything not aligned and christened by the MAGA movement is considered left/woke/Democratic Party/etc. which means it's bad until they change their minds and adopt it, if they ever do.
