jriot··on The death of the ‘Millionaire Next Door’ dream
I separated at 11 years from the AF as an air traffic controller; September 2023 would have been 20 for me. For the past three years I have been working for home as a senior data scientist - my life has been far better as a civilian.
jriot··on What cats do when we’re not looking
She was rescue cat, I would never declaw a cat and my wife felt we were the only ones who could take care of her. We don't let her outside as she has no way of defending herself and we live the deep south with plenty of animals that could kill her.
jriot··on What cats do when we’re not looking
My cat loves being outside, practically lives outside. He kills birds occasionally, but predominately hunts rabbits and squirrels. He also eats them on my porch. I have an indoor cat as well (she had he claws removed before we adopted her), and their muscular structures are entirely different, the outdoor cat feels strong, lean, and with the natural look of a cat. Cats aren't meant to be indoor animals - no animal, humans included, are indoor animals.

jriot··on Ultra-processed foods and the corporate capture of nutrition
Ah, sorry about that.

Edit -

Preparing each meal everyday is time consuming but I view it as the best investment in my family's life. We rarely get sick, if so its a day (a cold) when the weather changes. We sleep a solid 8 hours a day, and only go to the doctor for our yearly health check-ups. We also highly active naturally so this factors into it.

jriot··on Ultra-processed foods and the corporate capture of nutrition
Randazzo's is currently my favorite! Though I pre-ordered a Dong Phong's this morning as I was unable to get one last year.

Local Data Science prospects are low to non-existent. I work remotely and remote prior to Covid. Companies reach out and don't seemed concerned about my location so I don't foresee being remote an issue.

jriot··on Ultra-processed foods and the corporate capture of nutrition
Roux is an odd one as that is butter (oil) and flour at a 1:1 to ratio cooked over heat until the desired color is reached. It's the key ingredient in gumbo which has been made since at least the early 1800s.
jriot··on Ultra-processed foods and the corporate capture of nutrition
Cooking in general is time consuming. You and I appear to eat vastly differently, yet we both make our own food from scratch. For breakfast I eat 10oz whole milk, 2 - 3 strips of bacon, 2 - 3 eggs, and grits with butter (at time I'll have potatoes or toast depending). Our other other meals will include roasted vegetables, potatoes and meat.

Now I do live in Louisiana and Mardi Gras is right around the corner which means King Cake. Is this healthy for me? No, not at all. But it's once a year and we buy them from the local bakeries, where each bakery has their own recipe. Does this it make anymore healthy? Probably not, but they are good.

jriot··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2020?
One book that changed my life this year:

Yuri Rytkheu - When the Whales Leave

jriot··on “Really successful people say no to almost everything”
As children we didn't focus on a full-body workout. Though most children, at least when I was growing in up in the 90s are in far better shape than most adults. Sure a 12 kid couldn't help move an oak dresser but they are better overall physical shape. If adults were just active playing sports, I'd suspect obesity and related health issues to decrease with mental health improving.

I know there are many here on HN that will loathe the idea of playing sports.

jriot··on “Really successful people say no to almost everything”
I'm the complete opposite in this regard. I currently spend 2 hours a day training for boxing, spend time on weekends mountain biking and wish there was more time! At some point I'll be financial independent where I will be able to devote even more time.

With that being said, would it help people to view exercise as play time? If you go play basketball with a group of guys, are you exercising or playing? For me it doesn't matter, I'm going to be out there either way but for others would the mental shift make a difference?

jriot··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?
How are those principles not valid today?
jriot··on The Native-American Origins of Gumbo
Forgot about that! I have two different drive-thru daiquiris near my house. We had friend's visit from Seattle and we took them. They were surprised how much alcohol they put in them. They expected them to be weak since it was drive-thru daiquiris.
jriot··on The Native-American Origins of Gumbo
I live where I can get cracklins', Boudin, and snowcones on the side of the road. Is that extra right?

Where in Louisiana?
jriot··on Germany plans to dim lights at night to save insects
My backyard in Louisiana has quite a few of them at night. I see probably 20 - 50 a night back there.
jriot··on Why Washed-Up Dudes Like Me Can’t Let the Skateboard Go
Depending on the flow of the skate park it is a ton of fun to just ride the flow of the park. You don't even need to do any tricks just ride it all is an immensely good time.
jriot··on Millions of US farm animals to be culled by suffocation, drowning and shooting
As other people have alluded it is called processing as killing is one portion. We processed 100 chickens a month ago at my neighbor's house. The first step is to put two small slits in the artery on their neck while they hang upside down in a traffic cone; easy process as they don't fight or try to get out. Next, you put the dead chicken in hot water (temperature needs to be specific to not cook them), then the de-feather machine, then you cut the head/neck and feet off, then clean all the insides out, then they sit in ice water for a day or so before you package them. We don't sell them, we do this for ourselves and pack our freezers with the meat.

I haven't done larger animals from the killing but have butchered large cuts of meat. It is a time-consuming process while being physically tiring.

jriot··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
We have four chickens for eggs and one rooster. They are about as easy an animal as you can have. If you have a fenced-in backyard you can let them roam around all day, they will eat all the bugs back there. This is good for as we live in southern Louisiana which provides a plentiful amount of bugs. They are also more resilient than you would think, in terms of the winter for you. You'll learn as you go, might lose one to a hawk as we did, and have to clean up the carcass.
jriot··on Finnish basic income pilot improved wellbeing, study finds
Correct. An example would be to look around military bases or colleges that cater to the military. Rents are often on par with BAH (Basic Housing Allowance) and college's per credit hour is often near the $750 rate.
jriot··on Vitamin D Insufficiency is Prevalent in Severe Covid-19
I live in south Louisiana and I am often outside without a shirt or sunscreen on, my skin is not damaged.

jriot··on Exceptionally gifted children: long-term outcomes of acceleration (2006) [pdf]
The size of milk is easily explainable. I, a 230 lbs powerlifter am roughly five times larger than you at 50 lbs. My body requires more calories, nutrients than yours does. They can easily see that I am much larger than them, so it makes sense to them. As well as being factual.

I say this because my kids used to ask this often.

As a Cajun, it amuses me to read the comments. We'll boil up some crawfish, break them in half, eat the meat, suck the head, chuck it, do it again.

You can do that in certain parts of the US. Idaho and Alaska for example largely fit your descriptions.
jriot··on Tricks to start working despite not feeling like it
I have fallen over on the ground after 20 miles of running in both legs my quads and hamstrings were cramping. I got up and ran another 10 miles. Didn't have any choice, either run 5 miles back to the check-in table or 10 miles to finish the race.
jriot··on The technology pushed into schools today is a threat to child development
And kids who had social skills yet struggled with math still had to do math. School isn't just the Rs, it's also about learning how to function in a society with other people.
