jrimbault··on Fossil versus Git
I believe the video game industry (and other industries where code co-exists with large binary assets) mostly uses Perforce and Mercurial
jrimbault··on The curse of strong typing
> I hope I was able to show, too, that I don't consider Rust the perfect, be-all-end-all programming language. There's still a bunch of situations where, without the requisite years of messing around, you'll be stuck. Because I'm so often the person of reference to help solve these, at work and otherwise, I just thought I'd put a little something together. [emphasis mine]

As you can also see from the table of contents at the top of the article page, it goes through a great breadth of topics. And you can use that table of contents to jump to the afterword.

jrimbault··on Parsing JSON faster with Intel AVX-512
I'm using this comment as jumping point.

What's cost/opportunity to optimizing for a specific platform/instruction set ? At what point is it worth doing, when isn't it worth doing ? AVX-512 strikes as something... "ephemeral".

jrimbault··on Swarming drones autonomously navigate a dense forest
Isn't it the case that only 1 in X soldiers actually fires their weapon ? I think vaguely remember something to that effect.
jrimbault··on I accidentally loaned all my money to the US government
My intuition tells me that nowadays, if you can embed an arbitrary program "keylogger" onto a computer, it should also log most user events, not just "keyboard events", including screenshots of areas around mouse clicks, maybe a small OCR module etc.

Of course, a physical keylogger is a different beast, but really, if you got physical access enough to install an actual piece of hardware...

jrimbault··on I accidentally loaned all my money to the US government
But if there's a keylogger installed, why would the same keylogger not take regular screenshots ?
jrimbault··on Why Pessimism Sounds Smart
I think it's a rhetoric device close the antimetabole.

jrimbault··on Why Pessimism Sounds Smart
That's probably one of the quotes I was thinking of but couldn't think of.
jrimbault··on Why Pessimism Sounds Smart
You can be optimist about your goals but pessimist about your means. There's probably any number of quotes from military strategists about that kind of thing.
jrimbault··on Rustaceans at the border
> The kernel has to stand alone

Why ? (un-opionated "why")

To reuse the migrant melting pot metaphor used at the end of the article, the "kernel has to stand alone" seems to mirror the states wanting a "strong border" (while the idea of borders and states has a beginning and will surely end).

It's actually english going through a heavy compressor, vowels extended, consonants hardened.

jrimbault··on Why I love Formula 1 (and why you might like it too)
Thanks :) that was why I asked here
jrimbault··on Why I love Formula 1 (and why you might like it too)
Is there something similar to F1 but with autonomous cars ?

Just a race between autonomous cars, pitting teams of engineers directly against each other instead of via the human pilot.

I guessed that would involve some pretty different design of the cars, since without the human much of the current designs around safety wouldn't apply. Cars could go faster, slow less, take more risky trajectories.

There's RobotWars, but these always seem (currently) like a weird RC toys competitions.

jrimbault··on France ends gas heaters subsidies
FYI : wrong, so you can remove that "probably" from your mind.

In France, developers are amongst the most well off salaried people. A junior developper would already be well above the median income and amongst the top 30% earners.

jrimbault··on Storing UTC is not a silver bullet (2019)
Solar noon is much harder to "remember" since it varies so much over the year (and over the yearS)
jrimbault··on Storing UTC is not a silver bullet (2019)

jrimbault··on Parsing bitstreams with Nom
Preamble : not saying you're wrong.

The idea of fighting ("[being] in a constant battle with") the compiler seems weird to me, the compiler is my automated helper, the stricter it is, the better I work and I thank it for correcting me.

jrimbault··on Learn Rust by writing a small OS
Just to add to this comment, sometimes (often) the Rust's documentation(s) will point out footguns in C which is a valuable resources in & of itself.
jrimbault··on Star Citizen will limit its roadmap, as players are getting upset over delays
From what I know, talent is usually cheap enough relative to the total cost of a game, it's the whole pipeline around integrating voice acting and motion capture into a game that's really expensive. In this[1] episode of that podcast they talk a bit about the costs around that. If you decide to do voice acting and motion capture you also have to adapt the whole game and writing around that decision, which balloons costs a lot since you've decided you want _that kind of game_.

Especially in that real law is left for judges to interpret, and that's a deliberate feature to allow "wiggle" room.

So, it's not, it's just the first change to an already existing document. The first article of your constitution describes the legislatives institutions. I (vaguely) know that, I'm not even American.

I really like this tweet[1], which is bit cheeky, but gets also at the issue that everyone "basic" needs are actually different.

jrimbault··on Glibc is still not Y2038 compliant by default
I'm exactly of this opinion, it's better for us (programmers/admins/etc) to deal with some level of breakage now (gigantic as it may be), than for actual users to deal with breakage with their future dates.
