jrh206··on Ask HN: How to talk with logical flow and coherence at interviews?
Those clips are painful.

DeGrasse Tyson interrupts Rogan right before important words - punchlines. For instance, in the first clip, Rogan begins “what’s interesting is that the town is -”, and DeGrasse Tyson takes that moment to pattern break: “wait, wait, wait, have you seen that they did Starry Night in bacon?!”. Rogan blinks, stunned. His point about the town lost forever.

Regardless, it’s possible to be well prepared but not interrupt the person you’re talking to right as they get to the juice. I would suggest Sean Evans and Nardwaur as examples from the other side of the fence - interviewers - who are unrivalled in preparation and give their guests a chance to speak.

jrh206··on A man who uploaded 2M videos to YouTube [video]
YouTube have begun asking people for their opinion on videos in quick surveys.

Every so often (for me, every 2 days or so) there is a blue prompt with a video you watched recently. "What did you think of this video?" You're asked for a rating from 1 to 5, and then you can provide a little more data to contextualise your rating. For instance, if you vote 5, you're presented with a list of adjectives like "heart-warming", "motivational", "entertaining", etc, and you can choose as many as you like. If you vote 1, you're asked "did you regret watching this video?"

YouTube are optimising for user time on site, not time on video, so they use these surveys to steer people away from videos that you might binge but regret, and leave YouTube.

Right now, at least, the surveys have an enormous impact on which videos are pushed by the algorithm. I use the surveys personally to tailor my recommendations (and try to push creators who I think deserve more views). That is, I basically answer them honestly.

jrh206··on Imagen, a text-to-image diffusion model
I believe that this tech is possible, but this site doesn't provide it. Look at the source of the page: it's just a bunch of sleeps and then you 'download' the same file you provided.
jrh206··on Judge orders trial in Tesla autopilot manslaughter case
> Tesla cars come standard with advanced hardware capable of providing Autopilot features, and full self-driving capabilities—through software updates designed to improve functionality over time.

The marketing is weird. They mix up current capabilities and future aspirations deliberately.

For instance, here:

> The system is designed to be able to conduct short and long distance trips with no action required by the person in the driver’s seat.

They actually mean that the system is designed such that "in the future" it will be able to do this. The previous sentence is "All new Tesla cars have the hardware needed in the future for full self-driving in almost all circumstances", and you're supposed to carry that context forward into the following sentence.

Another aspiration, which if you weren't reading carefully you might assume was a present capability:

> All you will need to do is get in and tell your car where to go. If you don’t say anything, your car will look at your calendar and take you there as the assumed destination. Your Tesla will figure out the optimal route, navigating urban streets, complex intersections and freeways.

It's intentionally misleading.

PS. Yes, there are caveats: "Current Autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous". That doesn't make the rest of the marketing copy clear.

jrh206··on Practical advises on recommendation systems in production
Indeed, "advice" is a mass noun, so it has no plural form. It's just like "rice".

One grain of rice -> one piece of advice

Lots of rice -> Lots of advice

jrh206··on Tell HN: People underestimate the effect of colleges in making lifelong friends
Why the men and not the people?
jrh206··on Ask HN: Why are there so many companies trying to reinvent the terminal (badly)?
The point is that you can choose which facts to present. In any case, “(badly)” is clearly an opinion and not a fact.
jrh206··on Ask HN: Why are there so many companies trying to reinvent the terminal (badly)?
The OP is very negative in tone[1], although curious. I think the person you’re responding to provided a solid answer to OP’s question, whilst imbuing their answer with a reasonable response to OP’s tone.

[1] "(badly)", "always some startup with no good will", "Electron" (arguably), "filled it full of always-online trackers"

jrh206··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
Absolutely.

Another data point: I play the organ, which involves playing a large keyboard with your feet (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedal_keyboard). The structure of black notes is crucial to being able to play without looking (which is important because you’re simultaneously doing various other things). Concretely, I couldn’t imagine playing the organ without being able to slam my foot into the right hand side of a B flat in order to know that my foot is on top of the B. If you watch an experienced organist’s feet you’ll see them do this all the time.

I also find C major horrible.

jrh206··on Esports stars have shorter careers than NFL players
Certainly some esports skills are transferable. There are (for instance): surface level things, low-level mechanics (e.g. CSing in MOBAs); larger strategies (e.g. team play, map movements, game sense); and meta-learning things, like how to learn games efficiently, take care of yourself, work with a team in the physical world, manage a career, etc.
jrh206··on Ten richest men have six times more wealth than the poorest 3.1B people
I think I’d be ok with that. Trouble is, right now, plenty of people don’t have a good standard of living, and the wealth accumulated by the ultra-wealthy could make a dent in that.
jrh206··on Mathematical outreach: The good, bad und ugly
I interpreted it as an artistic choice, since the outreach Twitter account is all German. It's different from the article's actual title though - which I thought was an anti-pattern for HN.

It's quite a long one (40 tweets)! As a non-Twitter user, I will never understand why this is preferable to a blog post. However, some people seem to prefer it, and it's getting engagement from non-Mathematicians, which is all that matters really.

jrh206··on Two weeks later David Bennett is alive, his pig’s heart beating soundly
I've met plenty of reasonable vegans. I wouldn't consider them to have an eating disorder. I eat meat.

When I've engaged with discussion about this with them (usually because I asked), I've found their arguments personal and convincing.

jrh206··on You Feel Like Shit
When I was a child in Yorkshire I used to hear pop all the time. My parents and grandparents would say it. Nowadays it seems to have faded in favour of soft/fizzy drinks, but my grandma still says "pop".
jrh206··on Happy New Year HN! What are your plans for the new year?
Thank you! I'd prefer it to be faster too, I sort of rushed this one out as a POC. The next one will be a tighter.

I used Final Cut Pro, but tbh I didn't like it very much. I'm going to try Premiere next. I recorded it in IntelliJ with the built-in mac screen recorder (QuickTime). I used a plugin for the presentation-mode theme, but I've since got a new computer and I can't remember the name of it right now...

jrh206··on Companies that had successful pivots
I certainly view Netflix as a pivot. The things the company has to do, day to day, are just drastically different.
jrh206··on Happy New Year HN! What are your plans for the new year?
I quit my job. My last day is next Friday. I have 2 years' worth of living expenses saved up and the conviction that I'll find a way to make it work.

I've spent 2021 developing self-respect and solidifying self-care routines. I started a regular fitness practice, quit alcohol and stimulants, and grew closer to friends and family. Over the holiday period, I've reflected, and realised: I care so much about my body, what I put into it, and how I look after it - so why don't I have the same respect for my time, and what I spend the vast majority of my day doing?

In the short term, I will create the best free Java tutorial videos in the world. I think the state of Java tutorials on YouTube is currently poor, full of misinformation and inefficient scripting. And I intend to change that. My first: https://youtu.be/CN27X68YO4I.

jrh206··on Java Virtual Threads Preview
I really hope they change this `Thread.ofVirtual()` and `Thread.ofPlatform()` language; it sounds clunky and doesn't read like any Java that I've seen before.
jrh206··on Going to Work for the Tor Project
Personally I would say: “the issue with v2 is its design, not its implementation” or “one of the issues with v2 is its design, not its implementation”.

However your initial phrasing is perfectly intelligible, and probably grammatical (not that that’s so important, if it’s intelligible).

jrh206··on Things I’ve learned in my 20 years as a software engineer
Yeah, in principle it's a great idea. Realistically no rational candidate would believe that the lunch escort has no input.

jrh206··on NFT sales plummet nearly 90% from their peak as collectibles market cools
They are proof of ownership if you trust the originator of the NFT, in this case it would be someone like the photographer or Getty.
jrh206··on Monetizing open-source is problematic
All other factors aside (I think the responses from David are completely reasonable and bookend this discussion completely).

The enterprise plan for Faker Cloud is $500/month [1]. Retool donate $500/month to Marak [2]. I understand that the donation is not the same as paying for the service. But it seems pretty shitty and greedy for Marak to complain about this, _even if_ Retool were in the wrong (Marak could have tried to resolve the issue with them properly, first, before starting a witch hunt).

Don't bite the hand that feeds you. This sort of thing really disincentivises me from wanting to donate to or use this project. Personally, I would completely support Retool stopping using faker.js and pulling their donation - but of course they can't do that since it'd be a PR nightmare.

EDIT: I see that Open Collective reports that Retool's donation to faker.js has been cancelled. I assume that it will be reinstated per David's comment [3]. But as I said above I wouldn't blame them for cancelling it.

They kind of are. A one-man shop can only do one thing at once. Either they save costs on data storage, or they spend that time doing something else.
