> Well, no

No to what? No, if somebody was making a totally different argument we wouldn’t be having a different conversation? Or no that I wouldn’t be proven wrong in your hypothetical where I’m wrong?

>You can't just make a broad assertion in support of your views and then complain "oh, I only meant a more narrow version" when people say it's too broad.

Lmao I’d ask what you mean by “you can’t clarify stuff” but

I like this complaint about a guy not using his merit, effort, or capability and taking the shortcut of inheritance to become a… prince

> and it was the core part of an argument that people need a minimum of 2 acres of farmland

Then we would be in an entirely different thread talking about something else? I was pointing out that trying to use “I refuse to understand what I read” as a dunk doesn’t really work. If you’re trying to say “What if I invent imaginary circumstances where I am right and you are wrong?” then yeah, I’d be helpless in that situation

jrflowers··on Scrap (2006)
I like the transition from “I have an issue with what you said” to “I have an issue with what I imagine you said” after getting clarification

That aside the statement was fine as written. For example it takes deliberate and active misunderstanding to twist the statement “people eat meat” into “there aren’t any vegetarians”

> > many non-vegans think (whether or not it is true) that vegans believe themselves superior.

> It's hard to imagine a reason why someone is vegan, that wouldn't logically entail such a self-image.

I know a guy that’s vegan because he shit himself after going to an Outback Steakhouse

jrflowers··on The “mechanical miracle” that ruined Mark Twain’s life
I don’t think this article about Mark Twain, a famous guy one hundred and fifty years ago, lost all of his money betting on the wrong thing is about chat bots. He lost his money before all that

We will never know if Mark Twain would have or would not have lost his money betting on chat bots because he lost it all on a different machine that didn’t work

jrflowers··on The main way I've seen people turn ideologically crazy (2025)
“I have exactly one ‘extremist’ belief that I’m willing to share and here’s why I think it’s correct” doesn’t do much to clarify what constitutes extremist other than stuff the author is too smart to believe
jrflowers··on The “mechanical miracle” that ruined Mark Twain’s life

> At no point does anyone seriously comment "wtf do we even have alcohol|anti-depressants" when they see an add for one or the other.

People absolutely do talk about their opinions about alcohol/antidepressants. Also a lot of places ban or restrict alcohol advertising.

jrflowers··on The main way I've seen people turn ideologically crazy (2025)
I like that the author doesn’t clarify what constitutes an extremist idea aside from suggesting that he doesn’t believe in any. “Extremism is when people, who are dumb, don’t know facts unlike me, who is very smart” is a kick ass theme for an essay
jrflowers··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo

While it is a shame that tptacek has to see “commuters“ going both ways it is good to know that the people of Aurora have this beautiful park

jrflowers··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
>are you saying office buildings bring less to the community because so, so, so many more people work in them than in data centers

>Mine is that office buildings are not generally filled with workers from the immediate municipality in which they're situated.

Since neither are data centers, which aren’t filled with workers, you could’ve just said “yeah”

“Office buildings bring less to communities than data centers because of all the people that work in them” lmao

jrflowers··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
That’s wild, where do all the people from Aurora work? The data centers? Also what does the specific building or set of buildings you hate in one town have to do with the concept of office buildings
jrflowers··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
Wait are you saying office buildings bring less to the community because so, so, so many more people work in them than in data centers

Do you think a community is your house
