jrflowers··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
> Negligence can be "unintentional" but still land you in the realm of having a guilty criminal mind.

That’s just another way of saying “not all crimes require a guilty mind” with extra steps

jrflowers··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
> Crimes always require intent, the mens rea element.

LMAO “there’s no such thing as negligence” I type on my phone as my car plows through the doors of a Black Angus

jrflowers··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Feeding documents into a copy machine and getting progressively angrier and more confused as it prints out copies of them. Incandescent with rage I scribble “WHY IS IT DOING THIS?” on a scrap of paper and put it in the scanning bed

jrflowers··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
> One person speculated that the timing may have something to do with Mullenweg’s annual trip to the Burning Man festival, after which he tends to return “with ideas.” This year’s festival ended on September 7.

HN needs to allow some html in comments so we can put ‘lmao’ in <blink> and <marquee> tags

That depends on why, in this scenario, have I not walked out of my house in thirty five years
jrflowers··on I resigned from Anthropic today
Trying to imagine seeing years of transparently obvious marketing stunts and retconning my own memory because I read a tweet

Or seeing a tweet saying that a thing doesn’t count as a publicity stunt if some unknown number of employees mumble about it being spooky behind closed doors and thinking “that makes sense and sounds true”

jrflowers··on I resigned from Anthropic today
“I’m resigning because the company is doing the exact thing that I’ve spent three years helping them do” lmao

I liked the video of it googling a pediatrician. Being able to type a word into a search bar and finding a website relevant to that word? Truly the stuff of the future
jrflowers··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
This is an article that only cites Zitron’s opinions about subjective model quality. You’re tisk-tisking people to be objective about a bunch of words saying that the author’s opinions are better opinions than the guy he’s talking about OP

Some guy wrote that he’s grumpy because he couldn’t sleep and decided to dunk on an internet personality he doesn’t like, it’s not the ceremonial placement of the ur-kilogram

jrflowers··on METR and Redwood Offer Holy %^ Postmortem of the HuggingFace Hack
I’m not sure that you’re using “hype” or “coherent” correctly here but what other observations might a person make that sharing them gives you concern about their “worldview”?
jrflowers··on METR and Redwood Offer Holy %^ Postmortem of the HuggingFace Hack
I am trying to figure out how a stranger calling need an “anti-hype hypeboy” online is supposed to make me less curious about how much this thing cost. Can you elaborate on how avoiding being called this is preferable to knowing things? What other stuff should people not know about?

jrflowers··on METR and Redwood Offer Holy %^ Postmortem of the HuggingFace Hack
Have any of these reports ever said how much the cost would’ve been for the hack itself? It seems like “for twelve million dollars (or whatever) worth of tokens our bots made a bulletin board and found an exploit in our buggy grader” would be much less of a hype generator

“Your own link”? Do you think the poster you’re replying to is The New York Times?

This is the thread where we’re all agreeing that Elon Musk has a reputation for making stuff up, I think you might mean to be posting in a thread where people are talking about how cool he is or something. You posted that the two things are unrelated so you might be mixing up a conversation that is happening with one that is not happening here

If I wanted to have a completely different conversation, unrelated to his reputation for making stuff up, with a fan about his creations I’d say something like “He created reusable rockets? Wow that Elon guy must have so many patents relating to aerospace and manufacturing” but that would be a totally different thread

jrflowers··on Starbase, LA
It is factually true that Elon Musk has a reputation for saying things will happen that do not end up happening. Picking out some things that you like about him and posting them while excluding the dozens of publicly documented examples of him either lying or (very charitably) being so “hopeful” that he’s disconnected from reality is indistinguishable from volunteering support.

If your Tesla (made by a company he took private at $420/share) makes you passive income as a robotaxi while you sleep, which you spend paying off the loan you took out in 2020 for the ticket to Mars that you bought to avoid covid which ended up being pointless because nobody got it past April then I’d understand being confused about his reputation. If not, you kind of just posted a roundabout way of saying that you don’t care or notice when he makes stuff up.
