jrcii··on Knuth versus Email (1999)
I was reminded of RMS's autoreply:

I am not on vacation, but I am at the end of a long time delay. I am located somewhere on Earth, but as far as responding to email is concerned, I appear to be well outside the solar system.

After your message arrives at gnu.org, I will collect it in my next batch of incoming mail, some time within the following 24 hours. I will spend much of the following day reading that batch of mail and will come across your message at some point. If I write a response immediately, it will go out in the next outgoing batch--typically around 24 hours after I collected your message, but occasionally sooner or later than that. Please expect a minimum delay of between 24 and 48 hours in receiving a response to your mail to me.

If your message is hard to understand or responding takes real work, the response could take longer.

So please wait 48 hours after sending a message before you resend it, remind me about it, or ask if I have received it. If it has been less than 48 hours, the absence of a response from me only means you have not given me time to answer.

If you are having a conversation with me, please keep in mind that each message you receive from me is a response to the mail you sent 24 to 48 hours earlier, and when writing it, I probably had not yet downloaded your later mail.

If you are in big hurry to speak with me, and one day's delay would be a serious problem, you can ask my FSF assistant to phone me. Send mail to <rms-assist@fsf.org> saying what you would like to talk with me about, and giving your telephone number. You can also call the Free Software Foundation office at 617-542-5942 (weekday Boston business hours) and ask them to phone me on your behalf. If it's really important, try both!

An intermediate measure is to email me your phone number and ask me to phone you.

But if there isn't enough hurry to warrant phoning me, please don't bother the FSF people. The mail you already sent me will reach me before any mail they could send me now on your behalf. I will respond as soon as I can.

To contact the Free Software Foundation, use one of the addresses in https://www.fsf.org/about/contact/email.

If you do not wish to receive this message ever again, please send a message to rms-autoreply-control@gnu.org with the subject "OFF". Otherwise, you might receive a reply like this one up to once a month.

jrcii··on How Software Gets Bloated: From Telephony to Bitcoin
> random and useless 'nice to have' touches

We can probably conflate this type of problem with the second you mentioned. If the changes are that much of a problem there is probably something wrong with the software architecture. From a programmer's perspective it's easy to forget that the code exists to serve the user's experience, the user's experience shouldn't be crafted to serve the code.

I've expended 0 effort to find the answer to this myself, but I wonder if this is based on the OTR protocol, and if not, why not.

Headlines like this just reinforce my feeling that the "Internet of Things" concept is bad/premature. Maybe I'm pessimistic, but it strikes me as "Let's take this network technology that we've yet to make reliably secure or private and put it in everything!"

I'm a big fan of this project, too. However I'm disappointed that the final price is going to come out to about $1200 http://neo900.org/estimate

There seems to be a fair amount of money and attention being invested in secure messaging, Mark Cuban's Cyber Dust, Blackphone, the various things by Moxie's Open Whisper Systems, etc. However the Neo900 as far as I know is the only solution offering a sandboxed baseband which is critical.

There's one more factor which is the configuration of QoS. This can be as easy as checking a box in a GUI for home routers. I've also spent days configuring Cisco switches, OpenBSD queues, VLANs, etc to achieve this.

It could be argued that the power of lame duck presidents cuts both ways since they can act with less fear of reprisal. You may still be right about prioritizing congress.

Related, I once read an AMA on Reddit where a congressional staffer advised everyone to do their best to get op-ed pieces in newspapers which mention your elected officials, since it was their job and the job of the staffers they knew to compile such pieces for review every morning by the legislator.

jrcii··on FBI argues it can force Apple to turn over iPhone source code
> It's certainly not working for the echo chamber of HN

True. I would also go a bit further and say it doesn't appear to be working with the House Judiciary Committee. I watched all five and a half hours of the inquiry and overall, the committee including the chairman seemed strongly on Apple's side. There were only 2-3 dissenting positions in favor of the FBI.

jrcii··on Why do we work so hard?
>This will sound moralistic, and I don't mean it that way

It's truly sad that the culture of people in computing reading this forum, which reflects the nation and west as a whole, is so disconnected from God that you feel the need to disclaim the profession of morality or religion.

You've touched on a larger issue that occurs to me often. Though your point is valid, my response to a company making the argument would be, "too bad." /They're/ the ones making billions in revenue by voluntarily accepting a business relationship with millions of customers. If you want the revenue from those millions of relationships, it's also your responsibility to manage your side of the bargain with those millions of relationships, that includes your legal (and many other) responsibilities. Is scaling to keep up with your responsibilities to millions of customers easy? No. However that's not the customer's problem.
