jra101··on Valve Source Engine Running Faster on Linux than Windows
You can use the EXT_direct_state_access instead of bind-to-modify.

  glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_2D, texId);
  glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_2D, ...);
vs

  glTextureImage2DEXT(texId, GL_TEXTURE_2D, ...);
jra101··on Valve Source Engine Running Faster on Linux than Windows
Immediate mode is very useful for drawing a single triangle that fully covers the viewport, something that is quite common for any sort of image processing or post processing. In these cases your performance will entirely be limited by the complexity of your fragment shader or by raw fill rate and not by the method you used to submit the vertices to the GPU.
jra101··on Carmack on why transatlantic ping is faster than pushing a pixel to the screen
He is doing a clear which is pretty much the fastest path in hardware.
jra101··on Android Design
The ideal behavior would be if the app is launched via another app it should not touch the back stack. If I launch the email app from the home screen or app folder, it should populate the back stack so that hitting back brings me from the email I had open to the inbox.
jra101··on TVs are all awful
I have a Panasonic VT30 plasma display that was released May 2011 and I had to explicitly disable overscan when I plugged in my PC via HDMI.
jra101··on Resolutions for programmers
Another sport I would highly recommend is rock climbing. Most cities have an indoor climbing gym and on the whole I've found other climbers to be very friendly and helpful to people just getting started.

There is also this whole puzzle solving aspect to rock climbing that I was unaware of before I started climbing. You can mostly brute force your way through a route if you are strong enough but there is always a more efficient way to do it that uses a fraction of the energy. Figuring out the right way to do a route is very satisfying to my inner nerd.

jra101··on Windows 8 for tablet hands on
They also showed ARM devices from NVIDIA, Samsung, and Qualcomm running the same build of Windows 8 with no problems.
jra101··on Improvements in Windows Explorer - Building Windows 8
Very happy the Up button is back, biggest thing I missed from Windows XP.
jra101··on New gaming laptop with innovative UI by Razer
Oh neat, I initially thought it still had a normal trackpad centered under the keyboard but that is just a small bevel for opening the laptop.

Having the trackpad on the right makes a lot of sense, hopefully we start seeing more laptops that do this.

jra101··on Supreme Court: first amendment allows mature video games to be sold to minors
Legally yes. Most stores have a voluntary corporate policy that limits the sale of R rated movies to minors though.
jra101··on Supreme Court: first amendment allows mature video games to be sold to minors
Are movies or books an acceptable/good substitute? All this ruling does is give video games the same freedom of speech protection that movies and books have.
jra101··on Supreme Court: first amendment allows mature video games to be sold to minors
Almost all stores (Walmart, Best Buy, Gamestop, etc...) already do this and have for years.
jra101··on Chrome dev on WebGL security and Microsoft bullshit
I believe that is only true for specific GPU/driver combinations with known problems in their OpenGL driver.
jra101··on Amazon’s Android App Store Launches: Test Drive Apps Directly From Your Browser
Android phones you buy directly from AT&T have sideloading disabled. I believe you have to root the phone to turn this feature back on.
jra101··on Carmack: Direct3D is now better than OpenGL
Only the very first Call of Duty game used the Quake3 engine. Call of Duty 2 and on use DirectX.
jra101··on Motorola Xoom price official: $799 unsubsidized on Verizon, $600 for WiFi-only
Xoom is running a stock install of Honeycomb with no Motorola UI modifications so hopefully this means quick updates. Also a Wifi only version means no additional delay due to the network carrier.
jra101··on Dell Streak 7 Android Tablet Early Hands-on Demo [video]
Very disappointed to see this has an 800x480 resolution display. Same resolution as my 3.7" Nexus One but on a 7" display, what is the point?
jra101··on Nvidia Tegra 3 to Be One Full Generation Ahead of Competition
580 and 570 are actually based on the GF110 chip.

jra101··on Apple will not allow Verizon to preload software on iPhone
Aah, it was 2.2 that added Twitter to the base OS:

jra101··on Apple will not allow Verizon to preload software on iPhone
I got mine just before Android 2.2 came out (I got the 2.2 OTA update right after pulling it out of the box) and it definitely did have Twitter.
jra101··on Apple will not allow Verizon to preload software on iPhone
The annoying thing is even the Nexus One comes with preinstalled apps that you cannot remove.

Specifically: Amazon MP3, Twitter, and Facebook.

jra101··on New EC2 Instance Type - The Cluster GPU Instance
Modern GPUs do have a full set of integer instructions, they just don't run as fast as floating point instructions.

Depending on how well a problem maps to the massively parallel architecture of a GPU, this may not matter.

jra101··on World’s fastest supercomputer unveiled in China
Double precision is half the speed of single precision on the GPUs used here (GF100).
jra101··on Marvell's tri-core ARM chip has near-PS3-level graphics
Not really an accurate statement. They are basing this entirely off of the theoretical triangle throughput and not comparing pixel shading power, memory bandwidth, cpu perf (those SPUs on the PS3 actually do get used), etc...
jra101··on Is that Bill Gates staring back at you from Outlook 2010?
That's what I remember from a biography or autobiography I read, but it has been a while...
jra101··on My Thoughts on Oracle v Google
At the VM level, List<String> is still a list of Objects that need to be cast to String whenever you access an item in the list.
jra101··on Coming Soon to Pastebot: Music in the Background
They've said (in the comments section of their post) that this will not get interrupted by other music apps. They tested with iTunes and Pandora running.
jra101··on Android Sales Overtake iPhone in the U.S.
> I'll copy it to my SD card and delete it within the 24 hour return window.

That should be fixed with the new Android licensing server that Google recently announced.

http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/07/licensing-ser...

Edit: Well, fixed when developers update their apps (which they have a big incentive to do).

jra101··on Data URIs make CSS sprites obsolete
A sprite is just a 2D image. Animation in old 2D games would usually store several frames of animation in a single image, similar to the current use in CSS.
jra101··on Data URIs make CSS sprites obsolete
I imagine you could put your base64 encoded images in a separate CSS file to solve this, but then you are back up to one extra HTTP request like CSS sprites.
