jpwgarrison··on Short-Termism Is Harming the Economy?
Dammit. Of all the articles that need to be paywall restricted. I’m down. I’m sympathetic. But I can only afford to pay for content on a couple of fronts. I wish it was more. But I cannot right now.

But if that was the article it looks like from the headline? Give it. Away. For a minute. FFS.

jpwgarrison··on Show HN: IT Kit – curated tools for IT managers
I gotta admit, the very fist thing I noticed was the "This content is not secure" cert warning in the URL bar.
jpwgarrison··on MacOS monitoring the open source way
> I've come to accept there is no privacy on work computers.

It has always puzzled my why anyone began to assume they did have this privacy. I have been around long enough to see the token ring to ethernet transition, and (formerly) as a network engineer trying to jam web 1.5 business through a fractional T1. Never mind your privacy, all that network throughput and CPU is paid for and hard-fought-for and it costs a lot in CAPEX and OPEX. Getting to do a little online banking or email on work gear has always seemed like a short term scam to me.

Can you put a bitcoin rig under your desk and use your employer's electricity to make money? Yeah, if it looks like a footrest, until the culture and policy catch up. This already happened with postage and long distance phone calls.

You never had a right to privacy on work computers. We all pretended it was a little perk for a few years, but the risk pf letting you do personal stuff is not worth it anymore for companies of a certain size.

jpwgarrison··on Jack White bans phones at gigs for “100% human experience”
I saw Lou Reed do this in 2003. It might have even been about cameras at that point and the issue was the flash, not audience experience. But he was not. Having. It. Stopped playing both times and really was about to walk off. It seemed a little too much at the time. But now I get it, and I feel a little bad that the current generation, at least the phone addicted ones, are never going to experience the level of emotion you get with fuller engagement. This is even more acutely real in the theater and it will probably wither in the current... attention economy.
jpwgarrison··on T-Mobile Agrees to Buy Layer3 TV in Preparation for TV Service
Same here, 2 seconds of "what does TV have to do with that" 10 seconds of "that's going to take 20 years to integrate those two networks..." and 4 seconds of "wait, would there be anti-trust issues" then I read more carefully.
jpwgarrison··on Keybase is out for iPhone, Android
I just tried to use chat on FreeBSD (helpfully mentioned in another comment) but it fails with "error unboxing chat message: KBFS client wasn't found" so they might be more tightly linked than you hope.
jpwgarrison··on Maintainers make the world go round: Innovation is an overrated ideology
HAHAHAHAHA, it hurts. OpenStack. It needs maintenance. A lot. Maybe that's what you were after and I missed it, but OpenStack ONLY works if you have an in-house mechanic or 5. If you have less than an FTE to throw at ops, use ESX or qemu/KVM.
jpwgarrison··on My Hackintosh Hardware Spec
> there is nothing like TextExpander

We use ubuntu at work and I was VERY worried about this. But autokey is actually good enough. The UI is not quite as slick but the rest of it is a little better. The exception is the little pop up form fill things which are cool but I found I did not really miss. https://github.com/autokey-py3/autokey

jpwgarrison··on WikiTribune – Evidence-based journalism
Without commenting on the implementation, I think this is the problem that WikiTribune looks to solve? I know I have a fuzzy logic in my head that ranks news sources. And I have since before the web, but possibly now we have the tools to do some of the evidence based ranking you hope for! I am not confident we are quite ready for it not to be gamed for profit though.
jpwgarrison··on SDF – Public Access Unix System
(paid up sdf user since ~2004) FWIW they had to give back that IP space to the actual owner a few months back and are in the 205s now.
jpwgarrison··on A lawsuit over Costco golf balls
Not the parent, but in my case - mild astigmatism - dailies are too big and floppy and don't stay put on my eye. 14 or 30 day are thicker and easier to put in. I use them rarely - just for skiing, and I end up using the 14 day ones once or twice and then throwing them away. But the daily ones are just mechanically awkward and uncomfortable.
jpwgarrison··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
I like how HN (and others) handle this - there should be a static link to a 3rd party source, like a twitter feed, at the top of any status page.
jpwgarrison··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
I am having trouble sending attachments in the Signal app - seems unlikely, but could this be related?

[edit- looks like they do have a pretty heavy reliance on S3, per https://github.com/WhisperSystems/Signal-Server/blob/master/... and various other sources.]

Terminal Velocity is cross platform and open source and awesome. https://github.com/vhp/terminal_velocity
jpwgarrison··on TextExpander 6 or How Not to Launch Your SaaS
> leaves me in the market for a new solution.

Reluctantly, I will be looking too. We use linux at work and I have been using https://github.com/autokey/autokey there, but it is a little abandoned. I have to restart it with a cron job every 10 minutes, but it is fine otherwise.

jpwgarrison··on Google is banning Flash from its display ads
I think everyone got most of my reasons covered below, but here they are: no need to manage updates, smaller security surface, battery life, fan noise. I typically browse with Firefox Nightly, and without flash installed globally I get HTML5 or whatever a site wants to offer me if I don't advertise flash compatibility. If I hit some must-have flash I have a key combo that opens the current tab in Chrome.
jpwgarrison··on Google is banning Flash from its display ads
re: dropping [flash] from Chrome -

NOOOOO this is what Chrome is for! The only flash I have is the built in to chrome flash.

jpwgarrison··on Ask HN: What are some cheap idyllic places with lots of nature?
I was going to suggest Tofino, where I am sitting. But the internet speed is not great.
jpwgarrison··on Ask HN: I'm going to have to lay people off, and want your advice
This is good advice and continues to apply to the meeting/discussion with those NOT getting laid off. There is simply no way for you to pass on how bad you feel and have it come off well. I recall vividly a VP going on and on about how hard the day had been for him, and just thinking, man, keep digging yourself in deeper... it hurt to watch and I never regained respect.
jpwgarrison··on Ntopng: High-Speed Web-based Traffic Analysis and Flow Collection
Isn't iftop for a single interface? This can be a netflow(s-flow,etc) collector and thus give data about an intersection of links. This gives you the chance to add cpu and memory overhead to your switches and routers and also sampled data to draw dubious conclusions from! (Sorry, bitter ex net-eng. Modern data center speed and data volume are no place for sampling IMO. ASIC buffer vs microburst = hard to find badness.)
jpwgarrison··on FCC chairman tips his hand on net neutrality
They did roll out a mesh network here in Seattle. The problem was that it was police only, and scared everyone. I think they mothballed it till we all forget. I found the controversy mildly funny as the public got up to speed on how WIFI works. I am personally more concerned about private businesses tracking my MAC around the store, which is already pervasive - but not eough to bother turning off WIFI... http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Police-deactivating-contr...

Sometimes that is what I want, but usually I want a list of all the iterations of something to cut/paste/adjust.

I alias "history | grep" to "hrep" and I'd bet it is one of my top 3-5 commands.
jpwgarrison··on “Shellshock”
I read a few lines, and then for some reason right clicked into "View Source" intending to take a quick peek and read the rest. WOW. That is commenting your code done right.
jpwgarrison··on Pinboard 2014 Expenses
yep, this in a crontab somewhere is all you need:

jpwgarrison··on Penny Arcade – Surface Pro 3 update
My rage point recently- Why for the love of plain text can Excel not bother to encode csv exports as UTF-8? You can up and then download with google sheets to "hack" around this but I bought numbers.app out of spite since you can specify output encoding there.
jpwgarrison··on “A Windows 7 deployment image was accidently sent to all Windows machines”

jpwgarrison··on I'm About as Good as Dead: The End of Xah Lee
>"...internal feedback..."

Not so internal anymore! Don't get me wrong, I read your comment with interest, but then was struck with how we are talking about him as if he _was_ dead. Apparently he likes his life to be public but actual job interviews somehow strike me as private.

jpwgarrison··on Ask HN: I can't do this anymore, I need help
First, make a calendar invite for yourself and your girlfriend. Call it "kriptonic career and family budget meeting." Make the event for an hour, next weekend. Send her an invite too.

Then go to bed and cuddle. Immediately.

In the morning, on the way to work, start to think about how you could reframe your plans on a twenty year scale, optimizing for happiness at home.

jpwgarrison··on Firefox 28 Release Notes
I have the omnibar add on and have Firefox (nightly actually) configured so that searches in the bar first look at bookmarks and the history. If nothing shows up there, then it searches DuckDuckGo, and if I don't see anything there, I fall back to Google.
