jpdevereaux··on Ask HN: How often do you use instagram for viewing?
H) I occasionally see Instagram photos in various other social streams, but don't have the app so I don't follow anyone or see popular photos.
jpdevereaux··on Whats your Startup / App Ideas for 2013?
Trying to dry up the hipster job market, are we?
jpdevereaux··on Bootstrap 3.0 Upcoming changes
For a while the dash-ing annoyed me until I realized that it makes selecting/changing part of a variable name easier (at least in vim). Can't imagine that's the reasoning behind it but it does work out well.
jpdevereaux··on Blimp: project management for doers
Indeed, it feels a lot less "boxed in" than tools like Asana.
jpdevereaux··on Why I learned to "make things"
Once is probably enough to stop a good chunk of spam and general thoughtless comments, with how powerful first impressions are and all. (@dhh: does it work?)
jpdevereaux··on The Flat Design Aesthetic
I like the happy medium that the Squarespace screenshot suggests - flat list navigation elements that are implicitly clickable due to their arrangement, and lightly-gradiented buttons that pop out as actionable items. Moderation is ideal (as usual).
jpdevereaux··on Amazon, Advertising's Sleeping Giant, to Awaken in 2013
I just started using Amazon's Product Advertising API (for referral marketing) and it too seems to be fairly obtuse. They clearly don't put as much effort into their not-as-public products.
jpdevereaux··on Bootstrap 3 plans
The @font-face glyphicons will be a great change, it'll make sizing the icons a lot easier. I'm confused about licensing though - it seems from their site [1] that the vector versions are only available with a $59 pro pack...

jpdevereaux··on Why I learned to "make things"
This scares me about modern culture (at least that of middle class America). In grade school, I really enjoyed making things. Simple things, like creatures out of paper clips. To me that was more enjoyable than watching pre-made shows, or playing pre-made games.

When I discovered computers, it became even more fun to make things - websites, animations, scripts to make chemistry homework automatic, etc. My classmates would spend the same amount of time discussing who was the best at throwing pig-skin balls in an arena, or how funny that last South Park episode was.

Now that was before every kid had an portable entertainment system on hand for 24 hours a day, with interfaces tailored for consumption, and operating systems discouraging fiddling. I can only imagine the maker culture is dwindling, especially in younger generations. Is there a way to fix this?

jpdevereaux··on Humble Beginnings
But it seems this might not be the case anymore - if Twitter were launched like that today, would people even bother checking it out?
jpdevereaux··on Raspberry Pi Foundation launches the Raspberry Pi Store
Sad, I came to the store hoping that there'd finally be a dependable US distributor of the devices themselves.
jpdevereaux··on Ask HN: How do you organize your time as a Freelancer/Contractor/Consultant?
I've been hesitant about contacting agencies because of said margins, but if the projects are that much better perhaps it is worthwhile.
jpdevereaux··on Manufacturing a Renaissance with 3D Printing
Maybe they can start selling plastic and part plans?
jpdevereaux··on The Fast Fourier Transform
I stumbled across this site a while ago when learning about Neural Networks. Never even realized what a broad range of other interesting topics he covered.
jpdevereaux··on I Know Who You are. What your Browser Can Reveal About Yourself
I have the feeling people suppose they're in some sort of armored vehicle when browsing the web, when in reality it's an open-top Jeep. It's too bad the general public has no concept of how vulnerable their identity is on the web.
