On a similar note, with all the hubbub about how worthwhile college is, it seems that curiosity and self motivation are some powerful deciding factors. Perhaps the current standard of going straight to college after high school is not the right way to go about it.
To me it'd be most interesting to learn about step 2, or "how to build a community willing to pay you to follow in your footsteps". I've tried it before but couldn't find the right balance between helpful and sales-y.
It also reminds me of a humorous video from the MySpace era about what was called the "MySpace angle" — people use the best possible view of themselves for their profile picture, which potentially means obscuring some less desirable aspects. This can easily be extended to any other aspect of today's digital self-presentation.
Here's another idea that might help noobs such as myself: have a "tutorial level" or something to that effect, which guides new players through challenges by teaching them the concepts along the way. That'd encourage more people to get involved (you might be scaring some away with how challenging the very first challenges are) and also give people a sense of how to continue with the rest of the levels.
I've played on HackerRank a bit and one thing that held me back from solving some of the challenges was not knowing what I needed to know. If you're going through various courses to come up with the questions, why not link back to those courses so we can learn and then try our hand?
