jpdbaugh··on Ask HN: What are you reading right now?
You really should give it a few hundred more pages. I guarantee it will grab you at the end it is kind of a slow burn though.
jpdbaugh··on Lukas Mathis on Mac OS X Lion
If the iOS model of a locked down consumption oriented operating proves to be more profitable that is what Apple will focus on. Its not evil or wrong it will just be what makes the most money. Its really that simple. Apple isn't out to make the core group of users happer but rather the casual user.
jpdbaugh··on Lukas Mathis on Mac OS X Lion
Yes it is. They make much more money off of iOS than they do Mac OS. Therefore, Mac OS will become iOS because Apple isn't your friend they are trying to make money just like any business.
jpdbaugh··on Lukas Mathis on Mac OS X Lion
You are making a mistake in not realizing that is Apples end game to make Mac OS much more like iOS. Don't you think they realize how much money they are making off of iOS developers? They want the same thing for desktops. Not to mention the huge amount they would save in customer support from not allowing users to do anything beyond Apples control on their machines.

The truth is for Apple this might as well be a great business decision. It is probably in their best interests, because their goal at the end of the day is to make as much money as possible. There is nothing wrong with that I just won't be buying it.

jpdbaugh··on Lukas Mathis on Mac OS X Lion
Buying Lion with the proposed changes is voting with your dollar that you want more of those changes in future iterations. Not buying it and switching to something else says that you don't like the product. I use Snow Leopard right now but I think brand loyalty is stupid. I don't owe anything to Apple to keep using their product if I don't like the direction it is going in.
jpdbaugh··on Lukas Mathis on Mac OS X Lion
Yes, however I think the changes being made are definitely putting Mac OS on track to become a lot of more like iOS in future iterations.

It looks like I will finally have enough motivation to finally switch to Ubuntu. I just don't know if I can handle not having full control over my machine.
jpdbaugh··on Ask HN: is "The Social Network" motivating entrepreneurs?
It really is. Social Network is going to do for our profession what Wall Street did in the 80s for Investment Banking.
jpdbaugh··on Do something positive - leave your job
Both the articles statement were vague I guess, however I was referring to getting lost in thoughts and the trap of trying to figure everything out before making your move. I really am starting to find that is not have conscious thought about everything you want to do with your life and instead just do it. I really think over thinking or "getting lost" second guessing everything holds a lot of people back, including myself.
jpdbaugh··on Ask HN: is "The Social Network" motivating entrepreneurs?
I think it will inspire a bunch of people to try who will never in a million years succeed. It will also make it crazy easy for coders to pick up girls at the bars.
jpdbaugh··on Do something positive - leave your job
I disagree about getting lost to find yourself. Sometimes you won't be able to get back out a self dug hole without a helping hand.
jpdbaugh··on Google Engineer Builds Facebook Disconnect
It's too bad OpenID isn't cool. The Social Network movie is just going to exacerbate people's infatuation with Facebook and social networking in my opinion. This will lead to the common person being even more accepting of Facebook becoming ubiquitous across the internet. The side benefit of the movie though is that I am finding girls are much more into me talking about working as programmer at the bar...
jpdbaugh··on If you build it, they won't come, unless...
I just finished up working on a project for an entrepreneurship class I am taking. The basis of the project was to promote various deals from local college town restaurantes that were being offered through a online menu service called Lionmenus. A lot of the groups tried to use Facebook, Twitter, and Google advertising techniques and they worked to some extent. However, my group won the contest by a landslide by simply making as many cheap coupons as possible and putting them under doors and even more revolutionary, handing them out directly to people.

I believe this worked because we were selling something people want, i.e. free food. I think that if what you are offering has a value proposition, or in other words people would want it, then nothing fancy needs to be done. You just need to force the what you are selling and peoples faces and they will eat it up.

jpdbaugh··on Poll: Are you using SSDs?
Yep, it is off when it isn't and use. It does affect battery a little bit but I have found it be negligible.
jpdbaugh··on Ask HN: Good books?
Daemon and Freedom TM by Daniel Suarez. Everyone on HN would love it I think.
jpdbaugh··on Poll: Are you using SSDs?
I have an 80 gb intel x-25m in my 13 inch MBP but I also took out the superdrive and installed a 500gb live in an enclosure in the optical bay.
jpdbaugh··on 'How piracy works' according to Minecraft creator
I am not really sure why this died? Ten minute demos are just not enough time to judge a game.
jpdbaugh··on 'How piracy works' according to Minecraft creator
I often find demos to be misleading of what the final product will be like. Games are expensive, at least for me, and demoing the final product is the only way I will know for sure that I am not going to waste $60 if I decide to buy something.
jpdbaugh··on I'm an introverted hacker. I want to join a frat.
Shop for a fraternity wisely. How well you respect and enjoy being around the guys is far more important than the fraternity's social status on campus! I think that is the most important thing to remember.
jpdbaugh··on I'm an introverted hacker. I want to join a frat.
I think there is a definite difference between positive hazing and negative hazing. Positive to me would be dropping off the pledge class in the woods or something and having them find their way home. Negative would be sexual abuse. I think the former definitely builds bonds and is just a whole lot of fun.
jpdbaugh··on The Great App Bubble
The only apps I have purchased for a real amounts of money are from Rock or Cydia. Most of them were $10+ and to be honest I use them everyday. Apps such MyWi 4.0, My3g, IntelliScreen, Wifi Sync, and many others get daily use from me and and I am more than happy with what I paid. Granted, AT&T and Apple aren't likely huge fans of these types of Apps, but I think that is a huge mistake on their part. Android too is hamstrung by Verizon with what they are allowed to give developers access to on their phones. If these restrictions weren't in place I really believe that there would be so many more unique and USEFUL Apps than there are now. The really useful (jailbroken) Apps go beyond porting websites to cocoa.
jpdbaugh··on How Losing Is A Profitable Game In Baseball
The only way to fix this is for Pirates fans to stop going to the game. As a Pittsburgh fan and living there for a summer I am pretty confident in saying Pittsburgher's will never quit going.
jpdbaugh··on Ask HN: How does marriage affect the creation of a (successful) startup?
This is so true. I have a really hard time getting my girl friend to understand that I can't carry a conversation while coding... I brought it on myself trying to work in the same room she does though. If I could I would 100% have a private area to work in. I dream of having a house with a PRIVATE study right now.
jpdbaugh··on You’re a developer, so why do you work for someone else?
Even at school in a degree that one would assume most students can write some code I am finding that more and more when I meet students program they have no skills at programming or even want to learn. I think that people who can write production code are a very small population indeed.
jpdbaugh··on 75 Percent of Individuals Use Same Password for Social Networking and Email

Absolutely fantastic.

jpdbaugh··on Ask HN: Suggestions for Starting with Ruby on Rails?
I had a ton of the trouble learning rails and it actually took me a couple of attempts. The most affective thing for me was just starting a project and taking it slow trying to do everything the "rails way". Learning rails for me was a tremendously slow process but now it just makes sense and I can do things so much more quickly than I ever code with PHP. Rails is definitely easier to learn if you directly apply a guide to problem in my opinion, but maybe this is the case for all programming though.

More specifically, I have found railscasts and the official rails guides plus railsdoc to me infinitely useful. I usually look for a railscast to get the overview of the thing I want to use then look for a guide and then move into the rdoc for deeper understanding.

jpdbaugh··on America: Land of Loners?
I didn't move the whole time I was growing up and had the same friends the whole first part of my life before college and a simliar thing is happening right now with us going down the path of becoming strangers. However, I do think that sometimes a person does need to go out make new friends. I just don't have anything in common with my old friends from high school. For better or worse they are going down a different path. I really resonate with this article though and thoroughly believe I need close friendships to be happy, but I do not think that one should hold onto old friendships, especially ones from high school that you were likely forced into, at all costs.
jpdbaugh··on Kindle vs. iPad Displays: Up close and personal
To each his own but to me the screen is much more of an important comparison than the page turn is.
jpdbaugh··on Kindle vs. iPad Displays: Up close and personal
Have you actually used a Kindle or another device with an e-ink display? It is uncanny how simliar it is to paper. It literally looks like a piece of paper morphs into new page when change page. It is really out of this world.

Anyway, there are many reasons why the Kindle is more like reading a real book besides the display that looks identical to a piece of printed paper. First of all, neither books nor the Kindle have a backlight which does, in fact, make the Kindle more simliar to a book than an iPad despite its lack of pages... You can read a Kindle on the beach or on a deck in the brightest sunlight you can imagine and the screen will just look better. The same goes for a real book. Just try that with iPad with a backlight and you will see a difference there.

Also, due to the lack of backlight the Kindle is much better suited for reading before sleep just like a real book. The backlight of a computer monitor is the reason computer people struggle with falling asleep. A good fiction paper back is the best sleeping pill in the world and you just can't get that effect with a backlight screen.

Finally, just look the article we are commenting on. Do you not notice how similar the Kindle character is to the newspaper, magazine, and book characters at 400x? I would dare sare it is sharper.

jpdbaugh··on Kindle vs. iPad Displays: Up close and personal
I am not sure if there is that much of a practical difference between having a backlight or not. As someone who reads a lot of fiction though the Kindle experience feels exactly like a paperback with the added bonus of a dictionary and notes. The iPad may be better for some people but it is not the same thing as reading a printed book like the Kindle is.
