jpcx01··on Osama bin Laden Is Dead
Don't be so sure. I think he has a good chance, but there is still inflation worries, the housing market in a double dip, and an unusually high unemployment rate. I'd say it'll take some work to survive even a weak republican candidate. 1.5 trillion dollar deficit does not help things either.

I'm actually surprised anyone wants the job.

jpcx01··on Vico Editor (Mac text editor)
Looks great. I try just about every one of these new options. Kodapp was my last one, but it didnt last (back on textmate). I'll give this a try as well. It looks like it has even greater potential.

TextMate is a joke. Nothing worse than missed opportunity. Such a huge community behind it and MacroMates seems completely incapable of providing a new release.

jpcx01··on Vayable Is A Marketplace For Unique Travel Experiences
Is it the same pronunciation as "viable"? Or is it phonetic "vay-a-ble"?
jpcx01··on Vayable Is A Marketplace For Unique Travel Experiences
Think so? It's not a word and doesn't mean anything to me. I can't imagine having to tell it to someone in person. Anytime you have to specifically spell out your startup url, I think it's a problem.

Cool site though.

jpcx01··on Open Source advantages - lessons from 10gen and MongoDB
Interesting. Seems lots of similar companies doing this. Appcelerator / Sencha come to mind as I work with their products. Sencha seems to have the same arrangement as 10gen license wise (I think), yet they get massive amounts of shit since they started with BSD and then switched later to GPL (with commercial license for commercial apps).

I don't think there's really enough examples to prove this to be a viable business model just yet. These companies seem to be mainly living off VC funding, hoping to get a MySQL style exit at some point.

Hopefully I'm wrong though and they are able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a company can build a lucrative business off an open source platform. Maybe there's enough examples out there (WordPress / others?) that it's already been proven.

jpcx01··on Rails 3.1 shipping with CoffeeScript
Scss also provides pretty good syntax compatibility with CSS. All it's features are a superset on top of CSS.
jpcx01··on Rails 3.1 shipping with CoffeeScript
CoffeeScript "fixes" javascript in many very essential ways. The most important fix is the lack of global variables. It's all too easy to accidentally forget a var on an assignment and all of a sudden you get a global variable that can cause havok. CoffeeScript handles variable scoping extremely well, and if you need a global, you can use the more explicit: window.var = ....

Also it's class system and function binding (=>) is something I feel I can no longer live without.

jpcx01··on Fuel - A simple and flexible PHP Web Framework
I agree with your assertion to not use your framework. Believe it or not, having an open and active user base of your framework will help you and all members. Doesn't seem like you are attempting to start things off on a very good note.
jpcx01··on GitHub launches Issues 2.0
These guys produce an entire awesome startup's worth of development every couple months. Definitely need to be paying more attention to the how of what they do. Luckily Tom's quite the excellent speaker and writer. When he talks, I listen.
jpcx01··on Introducing Pow, a zero-configuration Rack server for Mac OS X
Nice, you can change the env variable POW_DOMAIN to ".local". Much better in my opinion (works better with chrome at least)

EDIT: scratch that. You can't do this.

jpcx01··on Introducing Pow, a zero-configuration Rack server for Mac OS X
Pretty awesome. It took a restart to get it to work, but it's great now.

As a minor aside, is there a way to get Chrome to treat .dev domain the same as .com? Whenever I type in my .dev app name, it tries to google search for it.

jpcx01··on LinkedIn Announces New Platform
Having fought LinkedIn's APIs and dealt with their crappy developer support, I'd like to give a very big warning to anyone who might be thinking about using their platform.

1) Their terms of use is unbelievably narrow. They own everything, and it's up to their discretion whether they think you are a competitor and can shut of your data access

2) Took them forever to get SSL support for their widgets. Despite tons of dev requests for it, they seemed to actively fight against it. Really friggin bizarre.

jpcx01··on The War For Talent
Don't play their game. If you are a great dev, ask for what you are worth (100-150 an hour). Or get solid equity. Or start your own company.

Don't be fooled by cheap gimmicks. You can buy your own Dr Pepper.

jpcx01··on Entreporn, The Fallacy That Wastes Your Life
Haha. Not sure if you realized this, but you are talking to the person who built the next Facebook, aka Twitter.
jpcx01··on [dead]
I like it. I hope this gets built.

Unfortunately, there's not really any more room in my menu bar. http://cl.ly/4vlI

jpcx01··on Firefly fans: 'Help Nathan Fillion Buy Firefly'
I'd definitely buy. Have a feeling the result would be some crappy tv though. Just a hunch.
jpcx01··on Skype 5 for Mac blocks all webcam access by Flash. Skype says it is "by design"
Flash video camera is a disaster, especially on Mac. After spending months working around its flaws, I've vowed never again to use Flash video recorder in my web apps again.

Currently it's completely broken in Chrome on Mac (even broke non facebook.com).

And I bet Adobe wonders what has provoked the wrath of Steve Jobs.

jpcx01··on Oracle discontinues Ruby/Rails support for NetBeans
They've been bought by AppCelerator so I highly doubt their longterm focus is going to be on Ruby. Will probably mainly be Javascript (to support Titanium Mobile)
jpcx01··on Oracle discontinues Ruby/Rails support for NetBeans
Yep, I think consolidation in the Ruby IDE space will be a good thing. All the super elite people are using VIM / Emacs, and all the lazy people like me are still using Textmate. If RubyMine can develop a decent size community around it (with plugins, snippets, colors, etc), I'd definitely use it.

They really have to speed it up though. Feels like slogging through mud when compared to TextMate. Not sure if its possible given their java codebase.

jpcx01··on Cold Water on the iPad 2 Retina Display Hype
At this point, Gruber is basically an extension of Apple's marketing department. Someone at Apple said "people are going to be disappointed when iPad doesn't have double resolution, leak some info to gruber to tamper down expectations".

I'm going to go ahead and take this one as fact. Retina iPad would be great, but that'll be in a year or 2.

jpcx01··on Deficit Reduction
I absolutely hate #2, however I would go along with it happily if #1 and #3 were implemented.

These are 3 really solid suggestions, that would in fact save social security. However, I think #2 is the only one thats going to happen, and its the worst one.

jpcx01··on Spray-on liquid glass is about to revolutionize almost everything
It did! I see parking attendents on segways every single day. Segway is directly responsible for a rise in parking tickets. Wonderful product!
jpcx01··on PEP 3333 Accepted: WSGI standard for Python 3.x
Yep, Ruby has どのような...我々は日本だ。我々は性交を与えていない

Also, no state income tax!

Is living in california worth over 10k a year? (assuming you have a reasonable salary)

jpcx01··on Sorry, your “cool” webapp is probably not going to make money
You're right, I'm not really happy with my input in the thread. Obtuse is a good word for it.

I doubt we have that different of an outlook. My passionate disagreement with the original author however is the belief you have to put making money above all else. I've seen too many startups end in failure (many of them clients) because they tried to monetize too early, or put nickle and diming customers above user satisfaction.

jpcx01··on Sorry, your “cool” webapp is probably not going to make money
I am expecting to make money. And I am calling what I do a startup. And the my goal of the startup is to build new and interesting things.

I guess thats not OK

jpcx01··on Sorry, your “cool” webapp is probably not going to make money
Nah. pg's post fits perfectly here. Specifically the part "Don't be discouraged if what you produce initially is something other people dismiss as a toy."

This is exactly what paras is doing. Dismissing apps he doesn't think can make money as toys. Why should the focus just be on making money?

Saying "if your goal is to make money" is sort of strange to me anyways. Probably because my goal is not to make money, but to build new and interesting things that have an impact. Focusing just on money to start seems like the path to building yet another 37signals basecamp knockoff.

jpcx01··on Sorry, your “cool” webapp is probably not going to make money
What do you mean it's "not OK"? Trying to building something new that people use and love is a perfectly acceptable path to building a startup. pg had a great post on this topic: http://paulgraham.com/organic.html

So you have an approach to building products that works for you. Great. But scoffing at people who actually want to build the new amazing things that have a real impact on the world is what I call "not OK".

After someone trailblazes the idea and builds something that gets traction, then we can expect legions of "you guys" who just want to monkey their idea and take a piece of the pie.

jpcx01··on Verizon to finally get iPhone
I agree. It's a completely anticompetitive practice and should be regulated.
jpcx01··on Verizon to finally get iPhone
And now the wait begins for iPhone to come to Sprint. I think I'm safe buying a Galaxy S next month as I doubt it'll happen within the next 2 years.
