jpamata··on Facebook monthly visits down 5% in April
You are assuming that Facebook is intrinsically negative, which is not always the case. It certainly has its pros and cons. For example, my parents use FB to find and connect with old friends from grade school. Some use it to know about local events. Some use it to promote their business or their fledgling indie band.

Aside from this, in my home country, the Philippines, SMS & telephone services are expensive. Being a 3rd world archipelago country, infrastructure in the provinces is so bad that cabled & optic internet is not available for a lot of people. Facebook is a gem in my country in that they provide free internet for anyone utilising FB's services with a smartphone (you can buy cheap 2nd hand android phones there for less than $20). The folks here use FB's services to keep themselves updated with the world as well as to call/chat. It's a great way to connect and recently people don't even memorise their phone numbers anymore and instead, people ask each other for their facebook.

jpamata··on Ask HN: Books you should have read when you start a career in SE / CS?
Designing Data-Intensive Applications[0] by Martin Kleppmann. There's a previous HN thread about it[1]. Helped me understand a bit more about databases and systems. The book is also very approachable and has the perfect blend of application and theory at a high level that anyone approaching the industry for the first time stands to gain a lot from reading it.

The Architecture of Open Source Applications[2] series is a good one for leaning how to build production applications and you can read it online. The chapter on Scalable Web Architecture[3] is a must-read.

If you're looking for books, have a look at Schaum's Outline of Precalculus [0]. Khan Academy [1] is also good and there's this MOOC on coursera called Data Science Math Skills [2].

jpamata··on Ask HN: What's the best textbook you've read?
Coding the Matrix: Linear Algebra through Applications to Computer Science [0]

A hands on introduction to both Python and Linear Algebra using real world cases (ex. you are given a high res image, make a low res version to put on your website so that it could load more quickly).

jpamata··on Ask HN: What was your greatest accomplishment of 2017?
Apart from finishing my last internship (graduating in 2018), my greatest accomplishment would be finding the secret to make connections fast. There was a post here several months ago on how to make friends and in that post, the author details that the fastest way to get social with someone is through self-disclosure. Just talk about your latest adventure, or talk about stuff you're passionate in. Next time you meet them, chances are that they'll ask you about your latest venture. Bam, that's a connection in the making. It was a big leap as I used to always kept my thoughts to myself, thinking that they're nobody's business until I heard that I'm labeled as that "mysterious guy" at the office, that I should talk more. It was perplexing as I knew that I was more social than usual at work: we talk about their day, we talk about the projects extensively, I talk about the latest news in tech, we have lunch together, etc.

Yet through all of these, I forgot to show a piece of myself to them. It was more of a professional relationship. Upon reading that think piece in HN, the next week I began sharing a few details about myself. Things like my plans for vacation, some hobbies I do on weekends, and some tech that excites me. Pretty soon, these folks are messaging me on facebook. We suddenly have a relationship outside of work. Fast forward to now, even though I've finished my internship at the company, my previous boss messages me from time to time about that vacation I'm planning.

I know that and they better be investigated and held accountable, but that doesn't excuse the faults of the current administration.
jpamata··on Did Bitcoin just prove it can't scale?
> 20$ transaction fee is an incentive for the users to restrain themselves to smaller number of larger transfers.

In my country (the Philippines) everyone is buying from high school kids to office workers.

The current minimum transaction fee is around $40. To exchange your bitcoin to Philippine Peso (PHP), the fixed conversion fee is 5%. If those don't seem a lot, get this: 83% of Filipinos earn below $400 a month. Most of whom I know are HODLing their bitcoin because it's too expensive to move their money. They would rather wait for their investment to reap huge gains before they cash out.

Bitcoin here is branded as a "get rich quick" investment scheme, and that's understandable, bitcoin doesn't have a valuable use case here. You can't buy anything here with bitcoin.

If they are, then what's with all of these trial by publicity, spreading of fake news, and making of baseless accusations? And by the way, the opposition isn't solely composed of the Liberal Party. I guess it's a result of the propaganda machine that labels anyone that's against Duterte as an LP supporter.

Apologies then as perhaps I've misworded there. I was trying to say that his presence extends to twitter and that it is at least significant/worthy of attention.
jpamata··on How Duterte Turned Facebook into a Weapon, with Help from Facebook
It is disgusting to support an administration that lies about the statistics of drugs to justify their failing war on drugs that has also taken the lives of innocents from children to bystanders (which the government simply called as "collateral damage" [0]). How many times has our government lied to us about the statistics?

2015 - 1.8 Million Drug Users from a study by the Dangerous Drug Board [1]

2016 - Duterte claims that there are 3.7 Million Addicts in the country [2]

2016 - Months later, Duterte claims that there'd be 4 Million by the end of September [3]

2017 - On May, Philippine Drug Agency says there's now 4.7 Million Addicts [4]

2017 - On September, Foreign Affairs Secretary (and Duterte's VP running mate) hiked the number to 7 Million Drug Addicts at a UN Assembly [5]

Tell me, if his war on drugs is such a success, then why is the number of junkies growing?

jpamata··on How Duterte Turned Facebook into a Weapon, with Help from Facebook
I'm sure they want to take control of the social media, since Duterte has pretty much been spreading fake news [0] along with his facebook army of trolls [1 & 2] to discredit the opposition. And sometimes even members of the Duterte cabinet [3] are doing it as well to link the opposition to a terrorist conspiracy. He even has some control in twitter, having been discovered by a social media analytics firm that 20% of those who mention Duterte are actually bots [4].

jpamata··on Training exercise boosts brain power, Johns Hopkins researchers say
Same. I learned about it while in uni and got into it thinking that it'd help me improve my academic performance. While I don't know of a good way to measure if I have really increased my intelligence, I did noticed that I could focus longer on my tasks: studying, coding, solving problems, etc.

Nowadays, I could study for a couple of hours before going for a short break. I know that some of you don't think that's good enough but for someone who used to struggle with procrastination and being "easily distracted", I am happy with the result.

jpamata··on Ask HN: What is your programming training schedule?
Most of the time, I flip between two books. The trick is to pick books that complement each other. Like say maths and machine learning, or a book on JavaScript and a JS framework. I usually read on the mornings & weekends and then spend an hour or two doing the exercises/projects at night, after work.
jpamata··on Ask HN: What is your programming training schedule?
I prefer to learn from books as I find it easier to pace oneself. Every day, I check out what book packtpub is offering for free. Aside from that, I also subscribe to safari books (they have a free trial - no credit card required, check it out). Every now and then I see something that interests me and I spend at least a week or two going through the book. If a topic interests me enough, I'd check out another book, look at online courses, spend my time on the forums delving deeper, and maybe start a project.

jpamata··on Five-Year-Olds Can Learn Calculus (2014)
It's amazing how much this cultural conditioning can affect one's aptitude towards math. When I used to help my brother with his maths, he would oftentimes complain about not being smart enough. Shortly after, he would give up on the problem and come up with a rudimentary solution just to have an output. On these occasions, I'd prod him to solve the problem, ask him about his approach, probe his mental process, and most of the time, he'd tell me the correct steps to solve the problem. Had he not given up sooner, he would've succeeded.

I think that an interest in maths, is the fuel to help one cross from problems to solutions. With how mathematics is taught nowadays, mechanical rather than analytical, I can imagine how easy it is for kids to develop a negative sentiment towards math especially when they get dozens of rote problems every day.
