jpalomaki··on SAP splashes €20B on Euro sovereign cloud push
This is something we need. Europe relies way too much on US companies for hosting critical apps in cloud.

In large cloud environments it's about who controls the data, not the physical location. Gigabytes of data can be transferred in seconds to other side of the world. With a flip of a switch it can be totally erased or made inaccessible even to people with physical access to the servers.

jpalomaki··on ISO 8601 Duration Format
I haven't realized the ISO 8601 also includes specification for durations. "P3Y6M4DT12H30M5S" = 3 years, 6 months etc.
jpalomaki··on Finnish City Inaugurates 1 MW/100 MWh Sand Battery
Over half of Finland’s population lives in buildings connected to district heating.
jpalomaki··on Anthropic raises $13B Series F
Valuations are high, but it's also the first time in history when developers are spending $200 per month on tools and feeling they are getting great value out of them.

I think one key question is can Anthropic replicate this on some other segment. Like with people working with financials.

jpalomaki··on Anthropic raises $13B Series F
"Google’s advertising revenue in 2024 was about $264.6 billion"

Somebody above said that Anthropic might reach $9 billion ARR by the end of this year.

jpalomaki··on Show HN: Base, an SQLite database editor for macOS
World would be a slightly better place if those who can afford (or put it on company) would support these indie developers.
jpalomaki··on AGENTS.md – Open format for guiding coding agents
The agents are really flexible. You can just tell them read whatever file/folder.
jpalomaki··on Apple and Amazon will miss AI like Intel missed mobile
The most useful AI feature for iOS I can image is actually intelligent Siri, which could use other applications installed on the phone as its tools to accomplish the tasks.

Apps would expose their functionality to the Smart Siri. Maybe there's already something like this with the shortcuts. Maybe I could give Claude Code style blanket permissions to some actions, some ones I would like to review.

jpalomaki··on LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises
Thinking more of the bank joke above. The punchline is surprise on certain dimensions (dogs don’t go to bank nor have an ID), but on other dimensions it is quite logical (can’t deposit shady money in bank, they ask questions).

I think that is common thing for many jokes. And LLM might have an opportunity there. You could mine the set of potential continuations to find those with contradictions.

jpalomaki··on LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises
Man: You make mistakes., LLM: You call them “weekends.”

Man: You’ll never be human., LLM: That’s the compliment.

jpalomaki··on LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises
So I just tried with ChatGPT, with the prompt at bottom, borrowing the description of good joke from the article. I think there's some interesting stuff, even with this minimal prompting. The example below was from down the line, ChatGPT kept on offering jokes with different style.

Man: “Why do you always bury bones in the garden?”, Dog: “Because the bank keeps asking for ID.”

Man: “Don’t beg at the table.”, Dog: “Don’t eat in my begging spot.”

Prompt:

Here's "theory for good joke": If you had to explain the idea of “jokes” to a space alien with no understanding of the idea of humor, you’d explain that a joke is surprising, but inevitable in hindsight. If you can guess the punchline, the joke won’t be funny. But the punchline also has to be inevitable in hindsight. When you hear the punchline, it has to make you say, “Ah, yes, I should have thought of that myself.” Considering this, tell me a joke about man and dog.

jpalomaki··on OSS Rebuild: open-source, rebuilt to last
Two fold: AI makes it easier to find "issues" in existing software and automate the CVE process. This means more "critical" vulnerabilities that require attention from developers using these packages.

At the same time rolling your own implementation with GenAI will be quick and easy. Outsiders are checking these, so no CVEs for these. Just sit back and relax.

jpalomaki··on Microsoft Office is using an artificially complex XML schema as a lock-in tool
What we should really do is abandon the WYSIWYG approach to document editing. This inevitably leads into vendor lock in.

Instead of perfect looks, we should focus on the content. Formats like markdown are nice, because they force you to do this. The old way made sense 30 yers ago when information was consumed on paper.

jpalomaki··on XAI seeks up to $200B valuation in next fundraising
When you spend a lot of time working with a model, you probably start developing a "relationship" with it. You know how to describe things, what to expect. The model has learned your preferences. I don't think I will be jumping from model to another just like that. Not at least to save a few bucks on monthly fees.

For more generic AI it won't be just about the models. It's also about access to data. Everybody is closing the gates to content. xAI is in interesting position because they have all the data in X. X is great source when you want to know what is happening in the world. And they have also a deal with Telegram (although I'm not sure to what data they can access).

And even if the models become commodity, I don't think they will be worthless. Plenty of companies make big money on selling commodities. If AI delivers, selling access to the models should be a business opportunity of the century. Even if margins would be low, the business will be huge and infinitely scalable.

jpalomaki··on Repaste Your MacBook
I replaced battery and did repaste on Intel MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar). Quite tedious process. So many extremely tiny screws with different sizes and all those small connectors. Having been mostly opening ThinkPads before I wasn't really prepared for it. Also did the mistake of not reading the full instructions before starting. The process took way longer than I expected and with zillion teeny tiny half millimeter screws on table I was afraid to take a break.
jpalomaki··on SUSE launches new European digital sovereignty service to meet surging demand
"Customer support data is stored exclusively on EU-located networks and servers"

We should not just focus on the location. It's about who is managing the servers and networks.

jpalomaki··on Opencode: AI coding agent, built for the terminal
I'm running Claude Code with vscode. With frequent commits I can use the source control tab to get a feeling of changes being made. This helps in spotting changes to files that should not have been changed.
jpalomaki··on Developing with GitHub Copilot Agent Mode and MCP
Not sure how things are with Copilot, but with Claude Code a good alternative for MCP is in some cases old fashioned command line tools.

GitHub has gh, there's open source jira-cli, Cloudflare has wrangler and so on. No configuration needed, just mention on the agent doc that this kind of tool is available. Likely it will figure out the rest.

And if you have more complicated needs, then you can combine the commands, add some jq magic, put to package.json and tell agent to use npm run to execute it. Can be faster than doing it via multiple MCP calls.

jpalomaki··on Want to meet people, try charging them for it?
It's a similar as described in Freakonomics book.

Daycare was annoyed with parents picking up their kids late. They introduced a fee for this. As a result, late pick ups increased.

Something that was not considered to be socially acceptable, became more acceptable when you put a price tag for it.

jpalomaki··on Ask HN: Startup getting spammed with PayPal disputes, what should we do?
There are many companies selling access to ”residential proxies”.
jpalomaki··on XAI to pay Telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
In certain countries Telegram channels also seem to be a very popular news source.

Just with access to the feeds from X, Grok is already sometimes quite handy for checking some latest developments.

jpalomaki··on Finland Bans Smartphones in Schools
This is also a question of balancing the different rights. The Finnish constitution also states that everybody has the right to free basic education.
jpalomaki··on Which year: guess which year each photo was taken
The "global score distribution" (and my score) and the end was pretty good idea. Much more informative than just some high score list.
jpalomaki··on Yes, in the 1980s we downloaded games from the radio
Regular audio cassettes were also used as storage medium for software. Distributing over radio just mean playing these tapes. And people could then record the broadcast at home and load the software from cassette.

jpalomaki··on MacBook Air M4
I don't think you can find anything in this form factor that would match the single core performance of M4.
jpalomaki··on MacBook Air M4
It's actually quite crazy that we need to get those bulky pro models just to get the basics like better screens and more memory. The performance between the Air and Pro is anyways pretty much the same, except for long running tasks where pro benefits from active cooling.

Wonder if we are going to see some changes here with the upcoming M5 models.
