jp0d··on Ask HN: What are you doing now to profit from the current or upcoming recession?
I've some money invested in shares. Most of them are down. I think just managing one job and studying part time is stressful enough. Everyone's circumstances are different. I personally need to invest more time into my health at this point. But you're absolutely correct. It's great if one could have time for both.
jp0d··on Ask HN: What are you doing now to profit from the current or upcoming recession?
I believe this happens more often than we think. It's nice to have some balance in life. I'm guessing only a few lucky ones truly get it right.
jp0d··on Ask HN: What are you doing now to profit from the current or upcoming recession?
Aptly written. Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Thank you.

@mbrodersen I don't disagree with you. But at this stage I'm just trying to be content with whatever I have. I like my job, hopefully that's not going to be impacted. Just trying to take a break from overthinking.

jp0d··on Ask HN: What are you doing now to profit from the current or upcoming recession?
Let me start by stating that I'm quite happy for all the wealthy people sharing their insights about finance and how they're planning to stay rich or cut losses during the upcoming recession. Bravo.

I personally however am trying to do nothing. I'm 37 year old and I recently found out that I've high blood pressure and higher than normal cholesterol levels. I also came to know about the passing of a few individuals of similar age brackets in my inner circles.

None of this will matter. Take care of your health. That's what I'm trying to do at this point. Exercise, enjoy a bit walk in the bush, go to beach this summer etc.. I think that's quite a profitable affair!

jp0d··on Musk admits he announced Hyperloop to get California’s high-speed rail canceled
As long as transportation remains very much car centric, high speed rail isn't going to take off. I don't really know much about transportation systems in the USA except for what I read online. The train network can only connect the big cities or smaller ones on the route. Surely the bigger question is how do people travel once they get off the train. It's again back to cars unless most major cities have a robust public transportation system. Elon Musk as a businessman wouldn't want to miss that opportunity to push an alternative to high speed rail and sell more cars!
jp0d··on How Mathematics Changed Me
hahaha.. Put it on one of the latest AI algorithms and generate a meme! :D
jp0d··on How Mathematics Changed Me
Unfortunately for me, I realised the beauty of it after graduating from university. Mathematics can be really beautiful and painful at the same time.
jp0d··on Witnesses, drone expert react to mysterious lights captured in Texas sky
Thank you for the explanation.
jp0d··on The Next Chapter for Learning on YouTube
Is this the end of Udemy? Edx and Coursera have positioned themselves uniquely by offering online certificates and degrees from reputed universities. I've noticed that most of the content creators on Udemy have channels on YouTube as well. They usually offer free content to showcase their paid content on Udemy. They wouldn't have to do that anymore as they can just switch to Youtube.
jp0d··on Is the psychedelic therapy bubble about to burst?
How is this a bubble if it's actually helping people with mental health issues. A lot of universities have begun studying this. These should never have been illegal in the first place.
jp0d··on Witnesses, drone expert react to mysterious lights captured in Texas sky
I'm not a conspiracy theorist at all. I guess most of the UFO sightings are either fake or mistaken. But should we flag this without analysing it at all? I saw the video and I was hoping to find some explanation of it in the comments section. The drone swarm theory is quite plausible. I was hoping to read what others thought about the fast disappearance of those. Was it a camera trick?
jp0d··on U.S. life expectancy drops sharply, the second consecutive decline
This is quite bad compared to other developed countries with similar HDI scores.
jp0d··on US Government Bans Export of Nvidia A100 and H100 GPUs to China and Russia
It puts Taiwan at risk. China would want to take control of Taiwan and absorb all the IP sitting at TSMC and other companies.
jp0d··on Meatless meat is nothing new
The ones at Woolies/Coles etc are usually shit. I remember having Impossible burger once at Grill'd and it was quite good. The stuff from Ikea are usually good even though they don't taste like meat.
jp0d··on Meatless meat is nothing new
Thank you.
jp0d··on Meatless meat is nothing new
The article is behind a paywall so not really sure what's it exactly about. New or not, they're definitely gaining popularity down here in Australia. I'm seeing more and more of those on the supermarket shelves. I treat them as processed food and occasionally have some just to understand where exactly they stand. Some of them are good but mostly utter rubbish.
jp0d··on A Love Letter to Geocities Sites
This needs more upvotes! How is this not at the top of HN!
jp0d··on Blue Zones, where people reach age 100 at 10 times greater rates
Makes a strong case for us atheists to form some sort of community and chat about STEM and acknowledge our science gods like Einstein. Now that I think about it, we will probably end up entering into some sort of debate. haha..
jp0d··on Show HN: IoT device to warn you of a supernova hours before Earth is destroyed
Imagine missing a notification from this device! haha
jp0d··on LUMI, Europe’s most powerful supercomputer
Thanks for clarifying. It's also interesting to see the presence of ARM64 and Power architecture in top 10. Also the prominence of AMD EPYC chips.
jp0d··on LUMI, Europe’s most powerful supercomputer
They've also partnered with the RIKEN Centre for Computation Science (Developer of the fastest Super computer on earth). Quite impressive and interesting at the same time as they use very different architectures.

jp0d··on Chinese students at Cornell “taunt” Uyghur classmate
It feels like the history is repeating itself. The people of Nazi Germany probably thought they were doing the "right thing". These Chinese students have been brainwashed enough to believe everything their government says. Or may be even paid well enough to act like that!
jp0d··on Ask HN: How to learn math from zero for adults?
True indeed. I was patting myself on the back for graduating engineering school without any help from WikiPedia or YouTube. But these legends wrote all those universe describing equations without the help of a computer.
jp0d··on Ask HN: How to learn math from zero for adults?
Mate, you've no idea how much I could related to your story. I've a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. Looking back at those subjects, I feel like I didn't have the maturity needed to appreciate the depth and meaning of it. I was too busy just passing exams and working to get a degree and eventually land a job. I did that and I have no regrets. But those concepts taught to us are the foundations of almost everything. The more I think about it the more respect I have for scientists who came up with those before 1950s! They had nothing and they solved their own questions. Bloody legends.
jp0d··on Not My Job
I honestly thought, this was related to the ex-prime minister of Australia (Scott Morrison).
jp0d··on Programming Burnout
You're not wrong. But I don't think I claimed anywhere that IQ is a measure of general intelligence. Neither does it mean that people with higher IQ will necessarily be more successful. But being at the extreme ends of IQ spectrum can be a huge barrier to communication between two individuals.
jp0d··on Programming Burnout
I'm not sure if the OP is the original author. It looks like the original author is only 14 years old. They may have picked up programming skills and possibly have higher IQ compared to their classmates or peers. It can often make it difficult to connect with others in the social circle. Programming was probably fun and intellectually challenging in the beginning but now the author might find it a boring. But with age, hopefully they'll understand that there are enough mysteries in the world to uncover and challenge their intellect. Good luck.
jp0d··on Silly Lossy Text Compression Idea
haha.. Silly, but an enjoyable read, nonetheless.

jp0d··on Engineers investigating NASA’s Voyager 1 telemetry data
I still blows my mind that they designed and built it more than 45 years ago! Kudos to engineers.
jp0d··on Many software companies are a joke
Everyone is at a different stage in their lives. It feels like the author hasn't had much challenges and found most of the work boring. I agree with some of the points the author has raised but not all. I don't agree with your comment about "writing is smug and shows no self awareness". It feels like you're jumping to a conclusion.
