joyjoyjoy··on Meli email client, pre-alpha release
"I was having some search issues"

This can be easily fixed. Try using Evolution for a while and you never complain about search issues with Thunderbird. In fact, you will praise Thunderbird for its search features. If still something is lacking, install recoll on your system to find stuff.

I would pay for an email client too.

joyjoyjoy··on Meli email client, pre-alpha release
I don't see a feature list. Does it support several different IMAP/POP emails?
joyjoyjoy··on African leaders launch landmark 55-nation trade zone
Yes. Just the biggest country in the world, connecting two major blocks - China and EU and possible India. Feel free to ignore.

I am not Russian by the way.

joyjoyjoy··on African leaders launch landmark 55-nation trade zone
THe book is mainly about Russia, not the EU. The guy is a major figure in US policy.

"and whose job responsibilities dealt a lot with said Soviet Union?"

That says is kindly. This guy was a major part of the collapse of the soviet union. http://transmissionsmedia.com/zbigniew-brzezinski-how-jimmy-...

joyjoyjoy··on African leaders launch landmark 55-nation trade zone
"Looks like we may now need to add the AU to the list. "

Honestly, I doubt it.

The more interesting question is: Who is Russia going to align with? No country can rule the world that does not rule Russia, the heartland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Geographical_Pivot_of_Hist...

PS: Thanks for downvoting. Please show that you are not familiar with major concepts that shaped many of the last conflicts we have seen. Take this as a start: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grand_Chessboard

Congrats. If I may post a GERMAN link from the same source that sounds very pessimistic: https://www.focus.de/politik/ausland/14-plaene-in-44-jahren-...
joyjoyjoy··on Why I Don't Think Craig Wright is Satoshi
Yes. Becomes more and more likely.

I mean, this is really amazing. This guy would have won the noble price in economics by now.

joyjoyjoy··on Why I Don't Think Craig Wright is Satoshi
I think I am quite sure who Satoshi is. Paul Le Roux.

joyjoyjoy··on How I encrypt my data in the cloud
I tried. I have a 100MBit line. With no encryption I have a very good speed. To get things working I came down to 1% or somethings and very sluggish.

I also remember that my internet provider blocks many ports and I had to use my VPN to get required ports to working. This again scaled things down a little. I found CryFS not usable on Linux

joyjoyjoy··on How I encrypt my data in the cloud
I found it extraordinary difficult to build your own encrypted cloud.

Options:

1. Truecrypt container. CON: Upload takes to long

2. ecryptfs CON Always had problems getting it to work. AFAIK it is not under current development anymore.

3. Run a FS in a mounted contaner (Filesystem in a FILE). Slow. Not very stable. Under no circumstance use ext4 or something like it, if you really want to try this, use ZFS to avoid data corruption

4. CryptFS. Great Idea but slow as f.. https://www.cryfs.org/comparison/

In the end I did not the cloud as a second backup for a large system (10TB) since I found no safe, fast and reliable way.

joyjoyjoy··on VPN owners: 97 VPN products run by 23 companies
Comparison of VPNs

https://thatoneprivacysite.net/vpn-comparison-chart/

I made bad experience with NordVPN based on reliability but they gave my my money back after 3 months with no questions asked.

Astrill is good but pricey. Astill will work in countries that try to block VPNs. CON: Astrill leaks DNS like a mother...er. I can get it under controll with ufw

ufw default deny outgoing && ufw allow out on tun0 && ufw allow out on tun0 to [IP of your DNS] port 53

You may want to use Softether instead of OpenVPN or the provided client of your VPN. I am only awar of two VPNs that provide Softether access:

joyjoyjoy··on The Coming Boeing Bailout?
"The US is the most powerful country on the planet and no one else is close."

Really? How do you measure this? Based on GDP Europe and China should be the same level. Based on PPP China may have surpased the US already. Military might? Questionable how effective carriers are against an able opponent. Paul Kennedy would argue, that increased military spending against an upcoming opponent might be a sign of weakness.

joyjoyjoy··on Monte Carlo methods – Why it's a bad idea to go to the casino
How about the lottery? If the Megamillions jackpot is, lets say 500 MM, your changes are not higher to win it, but more is paid out in that drawing than paid in.

"The US still has 19 of the world's top 20 universities"

Nope.

"and 40x of the top 50."

Nope.

But nice try.

joyjoyjoy··on The Coming Boeing Bailout?
"Given a crew that has experienced an AOA sensor failure during MCAS operation in the simulator, I would fly on a 737 MAX as it was delivered. Without concern."

Make sure your pilot is a bodybuilder or something.

"But Lemme said the Ethiopian pilots most likely were unable to carry out that last instruction in the Boeing emergency procedure — because they simply couldn’t physically move that wheel against the heavy forces acting on the tail."

“The forces on the tail could have been too great,” Lemme said. “They couldn’t turn the manual trim wheel.”

joyjoyjoy··on The Coming Boeing Bailout?
"To be clear, Bombardier wasn't sold to Airbus"

To be more clear. Bombardier WAS indeed sold to airbus. 50.1% for 1 Dollar.

joyjoyjoy··on Why Our Postwar “Long Peace” Is Fragile (2018)
"I'm more optimistic."

I am not.

"WWII was the last attempt to capture the wealth of developed nations by invading them."

There were many reasons. I was not aware that "wealth" was one of them. For very advanced but small countries with a small population it may have made sense as a last grab to try to stay a super power.

"These days such a strategy is a complete non-starter because no developed nation can withstand an invasion."

I dont understand this statement.

"Think of it like this: Silicon Valley is probably one of the richest bits of America. So imagine that some dictator decides to invade it, and that the US military try to stop him but fail in some improbable way."

Silicon valley is rich because of knowledge, no because they have stored gold in the vaults or oil under the soil. ALso: "The threshold necessary for small groups to conduct global warfare has finally been breached, and we are only starting to feel its effects. Over time, in as little as perhaps twenty years and as the leverage of technology increases, this threshold will finally reach its culmination -- with the ability of one man to declare war on the world and win." Brave new War, john robb

"So this dictator now controls a bunch of ruins with no electricity containing broken computers."

This won't be a dictator but a nerd in this parents basement doing DoS or running a CRISPER Lab from his garage.

"How does this make him any richer than he was before?"

I doubt that "money" was the driving force beyond most wars in the last century. Power. Fame. Ideology. But money?

The 3rd world war will make the last two look like Disney land trips.

Bullocks.

For example, try to track down this seller (Amazon Germany)

joyjoyjoy··on Amazon can be held liable for third-party seller products: U.S. appeals court
" Seems like Amazon can just force third-party vendors to reveal their full legal identity to the customer then?"

I bought a defective sever power supply from a 3rd party seller at Amazon in Europe. Amazon claims they don't know the identity/address/email of this seller. Wrote it off as a loss.

Edit: I mean, Amazon must have given this guy my money. They must have something from him. Bank account, Email etc.

joyjoyjoy··on Amazon can be held liable for third-party seller products: U.S. appeals court
I had an Amazon package in Europe stolen. "Delivery to mailbox". They did not want to reimburse me or send me another one since based on "statistics" they assumed the package delivered.

Thanks god I payed with my US CC. Disputed the charge, got an angry email from Amazon, closed my Amazon account and never heard anything again.

joyjoyjoy··on Lyme Disease Cases Are Exploding
"Also from what I've read just applying it to your shoes is hugely effective on its own vs ticks, with socks adding another large percentage, as the majority of ticks will jump onto your feet and climb up your legs."

This is very interesting advise. I always thought ticks drop from trees? no? I actually wear a hat sometimes in the forrest because of this. Am I stupid?

joyjoyjoy··on How Discount Brokerages Make Money
What makes IB better then TOS?

IB is more international. But in the end you will need at least 3-4 Brokers for a decent international exposure.

I prefer Browser and VPN from different providers. Opera has a free built in VPN by the way.

" and will always block ads no matter what."

I don't mind smaller ads. Metafiler for example. But most websites are unusable without an adblocker.

Strangely I remember that when printed Newspapers were still big, the advertisement was one of the valuable parts of them.
