josourcing··on Some AI Systems May Be Impossible to Compute
>a slight alteration in the data they receive can lead to a wild change in outcomes.

In my experience, it's not the alteration that creates an unpredictable outcome; it's the lack of nuance. Accuracy requires an insane amount of details, and it appears that some people might be waking up to that fact that the brain is better suited to handle those nuances.

I work with NLP and have discovered advantages in leaving some decisions up to the person using AI rather than the computer. One advantage being accuracy :-).

josourcing··on Ask HN: Is it reasonable to ban Windows OS from our workplace?
Another reason to be concerned with Windows is that the Microsoft Store monitors everything you do with the software downloaded and installed from there. It records when you open it and what you did with it, and then puts it in pretty little charts for complete strangers to see. Here's an explanation of just ONE report it creates with collected data: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/publish/usage-r... .
josourcing··on Ask HN: Is it reasonable to ban Windows OS from our workplace?
If I hear you correctly, you're asking whether banning Windows is a secure, smart thing to do? And if I understand Windows correctly, the answer is hell yeah.

Not to hijack your thread or anything, but I just discovered Window's MSIX Packaging Tool takes snapshots of your desktop shortcuts (and other files) and then distributes them to complete strangers when you upload a package to Microsoft's store.

It's a reproducible phenomenon, too. Just pack something with this tool, right click the resulting .msix file, choose Extract with the Packaging tool, and then look at what's inside these three files:

UserClasses.dat User.dat Registry.dat

Those three files and all the content inside of them goes straight to Microsoft and the strangers who have access to your .msix package!

josourcing··on Ask HN: Are there any sites tracking human vs. AI performance per task?
I asked about the same about a decade ago.

Haven't seen such a thing yet!

josourcing··on Google Ads suspended me and turned a deaf ear
FWIW...

I experienced the same outcome due to an outsourced foreigner being unable to access my U.S.-only website. So Google's 150,000 foreigners are in charge of determining everyone's website visibility.

josourcing··on Is Grammarly a keylogger? What can you do about it?
>you can host your own server!

If a person needs a server to figure out grammar, it's time to go back to school or crack open an English book.

josourcing··on Is Grammarly a keylogger? What can you do about it?
I doubt this has anything to do with Russia. Sometimes, all it takes is a little common sense and curiosity to even ask about these things.

Or maybe the guy just read the TOS. Some people actually do that!

josourcing··on Is Grammarly a keylogger? What can you do about it?
> Yes but if people are gravitating towards Grammerly it's because it's offering something those other ways aren't.

I disagree. Grammarly has bombarded the internet and YouTube with so many ads, there are ads that make fun of Grammarly ads.

Nevertheless, people don't use it because it offers something that others don't. They use it because they don't know any better.

josourcing··on Sam Altman’s Worldcoin wants to scan eyeballs in exchange for crypto
Sam Altman is a Mark Zuckerberg wannabe.
josourcing··on GitHub Copilot
It isn't. US copyright law says brief excerpts of copyright material may, under certain circumstances, be quoted verbatim

----> for purposes such as criticism, news reporting, teaching, and research <----, without the need for permission from or payment to the copyright holder.

Copilot is not criticizing, reporting, teaching, or researching anything. So claiming fair use is the result of total ignorance or disregard.

Thank you for this!!!
josourcing··on OpenAI LP
I thought a similar thing when I saw that pic: Not a single black male or female. And I'm all like, "Where am I?" LoL
josourcing··on [dead]
This is why you don't put young people hiding behind a computer screen in customer service.
josourcing··on Is Twitter becoming a write-only medium?
I began using it early on as well, and have watched it turn from an ideal social media site to a modernized 1995 FFA page (free-for-all links page). That would be the first time I encountered something that simultaneously progressed and regressed as well.
josourcing··on Freelancer.com Pays $3.2M To Buy Digital Marketing Marketplace, Warrior Forum
You're going to need to name names if anyone's going to believe you. I've only seen ONE employer from RAC at your scamtablishment. Perhaps exaggeration is your strong point?
josourcing··on Freelancer.com Pays $3.2M To Buy Digital Marketing Marketplace, Warrior Forum
Proof that Barrie doesn't know what the hell he's doing. He just bought a bunch of scammers! But then, seeing how Freelancer.com is a scam in itself, it all seems very clear now.
josourcing··on Visual Archive of America Online, Versions 1.1 - 3.0
Archived over 800 online areas with 1,300+ screenshots, but needs more contributions to be complete. Can you help?
josourcing··on What Yahoo's no work from home policy means
Agreed, however it's worth noting that remote work is (usually) cheaper. I don't know where Yahoo is right now, but if history has a say, the company could use a little cost-cutting. In-house employees cost more, and the CEO should know that.
josourcing··on Yahoo’s backwards move
I'm not going to defend the author's work. He should have pointed to some stats that support his assertion, which are plentiful and available on the web.
josourcing··on What Yahoo's no work from home policy means
Do bad remote workers stick out in memory more than bad in-house workers?
josourcing··on What Yahoo's no work from home policy means
My beef with the move is its hypocrisy. Disregarding remote workers in a remote world? At a company peddling tools that facilitate... (get ready for it)... remote work!? Sometimes this ish doesn't even seem real.
josourcing··on What Yahoo's no work from home policy means
Specializing in remote presence hardware and software gives the author insight into the remote working industry and how Marissa's move affects said industry. So of course he's going to have something to say (disparaging or not).

Name correction: Marissa Mayer, not Melissa Mayer!
josourcing··on Freelancer.com's Stats Exposed
Well after Freelancer bought RentACoder, I decided to work online without a 3rd party. The risks are bad enough without me asking for a good screwing (which is what I'd be getting from Freelancer)!
