joshz··on Stanford on-line Data Mining Courses ($10k for a certificate)
Not only that but prof. Ng (ml class) actually suggests putting it on a resume.
joshz··on H1B Salaries in the US
That's true. There are also several instances where wage rate unit (monthly, weekly, hourly, bi-weekly or yearly) is set lower than it should, like $6k/hour when they mean $6k/month.
joshz··on All that is wrong with the Recruitment Industry
I'm afraid I'm not. Guy was really pushy, when I didn't budge, he just said "good luck" and hung up. Then called me again in a month or so. Truth is I probably would've given him some leads if he didn't start off with demands and being a douche.
joshz··on All that is wrong with the Recruitment Industry
I don't know how it is nowadays compared to 2~3 years ago when I searched for a job in UK but imagine that with stackoverflow careers, coderstack, linkedin (not groups), github jobs, monthly hn who's hiring posts the situation improved at least slightly.

Weirdest experiences I had were when recruiters would call from a blocked number and leave fart noises or some other idiocy on my voicemail. Or when one guy flat out said (and one implied) that if I don't give him all the companies I ever talked to, he'd not give me the "offer" he "had" for me.

Minority of recruiters were good but most pretty scummy.

joshz··on AppHarbor (YC W11) launches add-on ecosystem using Heroku's (YC W08) API
At least in the case of Cloudant (CouchDB) the servers are in the same facility as AppHarbor.

joshz··on My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant
Residency is conditional the first 2 years of marriage. Both spouses need to go through interviews, appear they are a couple - have joint bank accounts, bills, live together, etc. It's also not a given that somebody with no existing legal status will be granted residency even if legitimately married.
joshz··on It’s OK to make an extra $2k per month if you’re a programmer. Here’s how.
I don't want to promote the site; it's #88 on quantcast right now and it looks like it does roughly what is described in the article at least with regard to gov data. The parent company, which has a bunch of other similar aggregator sites, not too long ago was hiring programmers for $70 in Poland, a pretty high number over here. It seems they made good money with this.
joshz··on What the Highest-Paid Programmers Earn
If you look at that H-1B table that was up here a while ago, there are at least 24 software engineer, analyst, programmer type entries that paid more than $500k and up to $1mil and 52 entries between $200k and 1mil. Those exclude managerial or executive job titles. Although given how many errors that table had, I don't know how accurate that information is. I'm sure there are plenty more non visa people that earn in that range or above.
joshz··on Firefox 5 Beta is available for download
It's about faster release cycles not copying features.
joshz··on Google Wants to Kill the URL: Chrome 13 Lets Users Hide the Address Bar
If it's what I think it is, they used to have this feature for app tabs last year, then removed it. I couldn't find much writeup, here's http://lifehacker.com/5608189/restore-chromes-toolbar-when-w... a mention. I'm happy it's back.
joshz··on Protip for salary seekers pt 2: Results from some mining of the H1-B database
If they're state employees, at least for Texas, you can have that info along with their name, agency and title right here: http://www.texastribune.org/library/data/government-employee.... You can probably get it for other states too.
joshz··on Typical programming interview questions.
It's a Look-and-say sequence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look-and-say_sequence
joshz··on Google May Kill Chrome URL Bar
Mid last year there was a tab option to hide the url bar, I can't remember if only for pinned tabs or regular ones also. For some reason that got removed and now we have separate app windows in recent releases, which in my opinion, are somewhat annoying mostly due to tabs originating from app window being opened in separate browser window.
joshz··on What will kill Facebook?
Out of curiosity I spent a bit looking around this site and reading about it. What I found were half-truths, inconsistencies (at least one), broken links, somebody calls it a scam, somebody else calls it legit... very weird, I wouldn't buy into it.
joshz··on Apply for a Google Cr-48
Seriously, I got all excited too, however http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/12/update-on-chrome-web-...

"We're starting with the U.S. and will expand to other countries once we get the necessary certifications. To participate in the pilot program, visit the Chrome notebook website."

joshz··on [dead]
That and wasn't Nat King Cole a guy?
joshz··on Goodbye to an old friend: 1-800-GOOG-411
Haven't used it for a while but I have fond memories of that silly fetch audio and trying to convince the system i mean Tom Thumb not Tom Tom Asian Grill.
joshz··on Bill Gates' Open Letter to Hobbyists
I interviewed with one. A .NET web development studio, can't remember who specifically. They called the stuff I did "open-sourcy" and I could tell they looked down on it. I think it's the perception that cheap programmers use cheap tools, produce cheap code and are low quality.
joshz··on Chicago Realty Group Sues Woman For $50,000 Over A Tweet
hahaha, I don't even care if if wasn't actually moldy. If Horizon Realty's policy is "sue first, ask questions later" they don't deserve good PR. Congratulations Jeffrey Michael, you're prince among spokespeople... no not really.
joshz··on Can you teach yourself to control your dreams?
I had a lucid dream when I was much younger then couple years ago I tried a couple methods and imediately when I realized I'm dreaming, i'd wake up. Experimentation also led to sleep paralysis on couple occasions.
joshz··on "US is empire of the devil": A visit to North Korea
If you like crazy, here's a blog of a guy who went from Vienna to Pyongyang by train, entered North Korea through the border with Russia and spent 36 hours without a guide...until he got to Pyongyang http://vienna-pyongyang.blogspot.com/
joshz··on Poll: Do you own a working television?
I don't have one. I do watch a couple of shows online and have seen full seasons of couple others after they ended. Overall I think I watch more shows/movies than my friends who have TVs.
joshz··on Ask HN: Who/What would you have liked to have heard in college?
Brian Cox, the physicist. I missed a chance to see Stephen Hawking. Out of some bigger names I saw Stallman, Mitnick and Desmond Tutu, all interesting people.
