joshz··on Python wats
Both behaviors are documented and "if not midnight" adds a fair bit of complexity, probably a good idea to know exactly what happens when you write that.

joshz··on Artificial Neural Networks for Beginners
Geoffrey Hinton's archived course is all about neural nets, I think you can enroll in the archived version, no code, just theory.

joshz··on The Max Headroom TV Hack
In 2007 a Czech art group hacked a webcam and incorporated a nuclear explosion at the location it monitored. It later got showed on a weather news segment.

joshz··on Show HN: Visa Explorer – Salaries, lawyers, companies of all H-1B in the USA
Check out Open Refine. Has a feature that clusters similar strings and unifies. I remember last time I looked at this data set... 4 letter acronyms spelled 12 different ways, it's unbelievably messy.
joshz··on Sway: A new presentation application from Microsoft
Shiny is pretty nice for presentations and Plotly works with R. Not to knock IPyNb because I love it too.

AWS or www.dominoup.com if it's with Python, R, Matlab or julia
joshz··on Peter Sunde arrested in Sweden
That's most likely what happened. Search and Identification branch of the Crime Bureau (?) worked with Sweden in the past - these guys http://www.policja.pl/pol/kgp/biuro-sluzby-kryminaln/bsk-str....
joshz··on ipython 2.0.0
Stable is up on pypi.
joshz··on Coursera blocks access to students in Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria
They restored full access for Syria.
joshz··on How To Find Unadvertised Jobs
Taleo makes a great job making it as painful as possible to search and apply for jobs. I find it pretty funny a "hack" of how to look through taleo listings is in an article about unadvertised jobs.
joshz··on Into the Bitcoin Mines
Couple weeks ago these photos from a Hong Kong based mining facility floated up, pretty crazy setup.

joshz··on Software patent reform just died in the House
He is apparently involved with Intellectual Ventures, so while probably not directly involved in killing the reform, this isn't the most noble of positions.

joshz··on Launching our Data Science and Big Data Track
You might like Data Analysis from Coursera.

https://www.coursera.org/course/dataanalysis

From the post it looks like Udacity too is working on courses that address this.

joshz··on Why is the number 1,729 hidden in Futurama episodes?
I think it means "#1 son". Bender and Flexo follow the same numbering pattern. Makes sense if you assume all bending units' serial numbers are expressible as sums of two cubes.
joshz··on Pulsar: Concurrent framework for Python
What about concurrent.futures from standard library?
joshz··on Functional Python Made Easy
btw, Python 3.3 introduced ChainMap for "merging" dicts.

joshz··on Show HN: Curated Who's Hiring
I've been working on another one of those apps. It's a real pain in the ass to get accurate location. Both NER or regex location extraction and geocoding services can be slow and inaccurate in variety of ways. The way that brought me the most success is regex and a tabulated file with city names, coordinates and some other info. In either case, there's manual labor involved in finding false positives and negatives.
joshz··on Principles of Reactive Programming
Typesafe also just announced a tutoring program for this and the intro course.

joshz··on Scala School
Coursera has a class as well. Martin Odersky tweeted a while ago about a possible advanced course in the fall but it doesn't look like it's happening yet.

joshz··on New online master's degree to train the data scientists of tomorrow
Incidentally Coursera's Intro to Data Science looks/ed to be a trial run for the first of three classes in the UW Data Science certificate program [1]. Each class is a bit over $1k. UW did the same with Intro to Computational Finance and Financial Econometrics.

joshz··on “Dihydrogen monoxide” joke gets DJs suspended
Race doesn't necessarily mean ethnicity.
joshz··on Sophie In North Korea
There's a great writeup on reddit about "What North Koreans were told about World War II" [1] with a list of books and couple other media buried in the thread.

joshz··on U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz Issues Statement on Aaron Swartz Case
After the fact you can try to make it sound however you like. But when your option is to get off the lawn or get a bullet in the head, it sounds entirely different. The release is loaded with statements making it sound like he "deserved it" and some empty "didn't intend to" is worthless.
joshz··on School of Data - Learn how to find, process, analyze and visualize data
Speaking of Coursera, Data Analysis[1] starts January - "applied statistics course focusing on data analysis".

joshz··on Gmail.com was down
Oh that's what happened. This is a pretty unexpected oversight from a company that tests their software so extensively to have browsers crash because an email service/sync service is down.

joshz··on Coursera's Functional Programming - Cheating Discovered
Certificates and other records from this and Robert Sedgewick's algorithms course (maybe others) can be shared with employers through Coursera's placement service. Not entirely meaningless.
joshz··on Microsoft: 'To fill 6,000 jobs, we'll pay $10K per visa'
Microsoft doesn't pay that low. Here's[1] some data from 2 years back. Friend of mine got over 100k last year, they treat H1-B holders well.
