joshux··on Gerald M. Weinberg has died
RIP, Gerald Weinberg

There's a less know book written by him: Weinberg on Writing: The Fieldstone Method

It's the only book I've found that teaches you how to steal like an writer, which the book Steal Like an Artist advocates but doesn't get into how to actually do it.

joshux··on Ask HN: Which book have you read, but do not recommend?
"Obstacle is the Way": Basically a collection of motivational stories that pretends to be related to stoicism.

A better books is: "A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy"

joshux··on Ask HN: What's your favorite tech talk?
Damien Katz - CouchDB and Me: https://www.infoq.com/presentations/katz-couchdb-and-me

The talk is about how Damien quit his job to hack on open source software. It shows his struggle and doubt while embarking on the project and then finally invented CouchDB. It's a passionate and human account of the process of creating something significant. I recommend every hacker watch this.

Udacity Data science nanodegree
joshux··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2014?
Connected is on my audible that I'm planning to listen to. I'm also interested in networks, 6 degrees..etc.

May I ask how you apply what you learned from the book to your startup? I'm quite curious.

joshux··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2014?
+1 for Taleb's books. His Black Swan book actually inspired me to pursue a startup. However, his ideas are not actually that original (which is not a bad thing). One might get similar level of knowledge(albeit takes more time) from reading stoic philosophy, Popper's philosophy of science, tacit knowledge (Michael Polanyi) and complex system sciences.
joshux··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2014?
1. Body by Science - changed my view about exercising. HIIT for 12 minutes a week seems more doable and fun for a busy life. And it actually works.

2. Mini Habits - the only routine building method that worked for me.

joshux··on Ask HN: What happens to older developers?
Richard Hammings has a similar advice regarding scientific research: "Somewhere around every seven years make a significant, if not complete, shift in your field. Thus, I shifted from numerical analysis, to hardware, to software, and so on, periodically, because you tend to use up your ideas. When you go to a new field, you have to start over as a baby. You are no longer the big mukity muk and you can start back there and you can start planting those acorns which will become the giant oaks."

joshux··on Ask HN: Help... I just can't get excited about data structures.
Since you have a physics background, you might be interested in this book: Think Complexity http://www.greenteapress.com/compmod/

The book teaches concepts of Algorithm and Data Structure in the context of Complex System Sciences.

Though it's a bit light-weight, but it might be a good starting point.
