joshuaturner··on Napster sparked a file-sharing revolution 25 years ago
This is especially true with the current wave of upscaled 4k releases that are, frankly - awful. Eventually, these will be the only versions we have access to on streaming platforms, but someone will have the original Blu-ray remux or DVD rip on their Plex server.
joshuaturner··on De-googling, so far
I can appreciate the hesitancy because you need an account, but Kagi is such a great search engine. Their incentives align much better with their actual users and because of that they support tons of customization/filtering options Google just can't (read: won't).
joshuaturner··on Show HN: We built PriceLevel to find out what companies pay for SaaS
Gonna make a new site that just embeds a Google Sheet and lists all the pricing details - PriceLevelLevel.com
joshuaturner··on What is the most useful project you have worked on?
In 2020 we had a pretty hard pivot due to COVID and worked with several state parties and organizations to coordinate mail-in voting registration drives and handle registration form OCR and phone validation before having them sent to the state. It was a chaotic year, and I know if we hadn't been there another company would have filled the role, but it was really meaningful work that had a direct impact on the elections that year.
joshuaturner··on Show HN: Kyoo – Self-hosted media browser (Jellyfin/Plex alternative)
The biggest hurdle I've run into when trying to manage an audiobook library with Plex is the metadata source. There are a few plugins that try and gather from Audible, I assume by scraping, but it's always minimal and very flaky. I haven't revisited this for a while now though, so hopefully things have improved - I would love to start archiving my Audible collection.

joshuaturner··on Utility classes aren't the same as inline styles (2021)
CSS/SCSS modules are still, for me, the best option to balance maintainability and flexibility within a component

joshuaturner··on Generals.io – Capture enemy generals to defeat them
I used to play this game all the time - great blast from the past seeing it posted today. It's like a mini RTS.

I love how easy it is to jump into/out of a game quickly, at most, you're only ever committing 10 minutes.

joshuaturner··on Posts, profiles, and user search are now available without login
As popular as it is among specific groups, I can't help but feel the decentralized push is going to hurt adoption. Maybe not as badly as it hurt Mastodon because they do supply a "default" server to join, but most people in my experience, don't want a decentralized platform and enjoy the benefits of a centralized platform quite a bit.

I suppose time will tell.

joshuaturner··on Beeper – Moving Forward
Apple has not reached the market share in any category that Microsoft had at its peak with Windows
joshuaturner··on How to Paint 50k Miles of Lines
Really not a fan of this slideshow style presentation - tons of great media sure, but I don't see why that couldn't be inlined or at least responsive to scrolling
joshuaturner··on GitHub is down
The great AWS crash of 2017 convinced me to distribute a bit more, thankfully
joshuaturner··on GitHub is down
You've got to wonder what the regex that caused _this_ downtime is going to be
joshuaturner··on Sequel Pro – Open source macOS native MySQL GUI client
I tried out TablePlus, but at the time they were lacking user management.

With that recent addition, it's been able to completely replace Sequel Pro and Postico for Postgres management

joshuaturner··on Apple rejects Puffin Browser on iOS
Especially when you read their privacy policy, realize they're a Chinese company, and see this: "However, be aware of the possibility of surveillance by intelligence agencies in your home country and our home country."

I'm guessing this thread got linked to from reddit
joshuaturner··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
This reminds me of the jailbreaking scene a few years back. I was at an event centered around jailbreaking, and you were able to ssh into 80% of users iOS devices by using the default root password, alpine.
joshuaturner··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
I would argue that releasing this vulnerability as irresponsibly as he did is showing he cares more about negative publicity than user security.

Yes, it's Apple's fault for poor QA that this was released, but this guy also put users at risk by telling the entire world about it without giving Apple a chance to fix it.

You're right, it's about user security before publicity. So make sure users are safe first.

joshuaturner··on Send Messages by Carrier Pigeons
The real question is how much VC will you need to make it a reality?
joshuaturner··on Send Messages by Carrier Pigeons
I can't believe we didn't use this. Would you like a job in our puns department?
joshuaturner··on Send Messages by Carrier Pigeons
We're hard a work developing North Face jackets and water wings to make this a reality.
