There are many ways to go about getting your license, but if you decide you want to go the self-study route, I highly recommend using https://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/. I used this tool for a few months before taking my exam at MIT. Also, it's worth studying for the higher class licenses - when I took my exam, the instructor offered and encouraged everyone to take the exam for the higher class for free immediately after.
joshuamcginnis··on Boeing acquires flight-planning app maker ForeFlight
Big fan of ForeFlight, as are my favorite pilot YouTubers Matthew Guthmiller(N367HP) and Stevo1kinevo (N851TB). Hopefully Boeing keeps the wind in the sails of the ForeFlight team.
joshuamcginnis··on Ask HN: Developers aged 50, how have you gotten around age discrimination?
True words of wisdom. Thank you kind sir!
joshuamcginnis··on Ask HN: Developers aged 50, how have you gotten around age discrimination?
> to work with younger guys as a 1:1 basis

I wonder if you can expand on this. As I get older, I find myself and my peers confronted with having to answer to younger, often less experienced, stakeholders. What kind of challenges have these presented for you and how have you adapted? What philosophy or attitude should us aging techies adopt as the gap between our peers widens?

joshuamcginnis··on The escape-room games industry is booming
I've done several of these and highly recommend it. Part of the puzzle is that you don't always know what the objective is; you explore a themed room turning knobs, pushing things and looking for anything out of the ordinary that might resemble a clue. It could be that you knock on a painting hanging on the wall and a hidden door opens, revealing a key. You remember that you tried to open a chest earlier but it was locked. So you try the key and the chest opens, revealing another clue.
joshuamcginnis··on To protect kids, don’t send report cards home on Fridays
If my years of adolescent beatings for anything less than an A taught me anything, it was: don't bring report cards home on Friday and sign your own progress reports.
joshuamcginnis··on Songcraft Beta – A songwriting tool and guitar tab builder
I see a lot of folks mention guitar tab pro files with a few open source editors[1], but little mention of where folks are getting free pro files. What do you use and where do you get your tabs? I'm willing to pay if it's worth it.

Is it possible the strange earthquake waves[1] recently reported were related or an early indicator of this event?

It is unfortunate we surrender our freedom of movement and 4th amendment rights for the illusion of security.
joshuamcginnis··on Show HN: JPL Space Calendar iCalendar Support
Author here. This was a fun little side project. It's a ruby Sinatra app that parses events from the unstructured JPL Space Calendar page and publishes the calendar in JSON and iCalendar formats.

This was my first time using Digital Ocean to host a little dockerized side-project. So far, my experience has been great.

Alternatively, provide a Brewfile (`brew bundle dump`) and let users edit and install (`brew bundle`) themselves.
joshuamcginnis··on NYC Mesh – community-owned network to replace your current internet connection
There's a similar effort gaining traction in the Los Angeles area: https://www.communitybroadband.la/

I've also noticed that local municipalities are getting into the ISP business. Beverly Hills, for example, is currently deploying a city-owned/operated fiber-backed ISP: http://www.beverlyhills.org/fiber

joshuamcginnis··on Designing Solo, a new U2F/FIDO2 Token
Yea, that is cumbersome and not at all user-friendly. I was operating under the assumption of a single app + device use-case at solely Google in my original comment.
joshuamcginnis··on Designing Solo, a new U2F/FIDO2 Token
Seems pretty easy to me, in my opinion.

joshuamcginnis··on Closest Temperate World Orbiting Quiet Star Discovered
The article states the planet is 11 light-years away from our solar system. Assuming you travel at around 60K km/h / 40K mph (roughly the speed of the New Horizons probe), it would take about 220,000 total Earth years to arrive.
