joshuamarksmith··on California could ban Clear, which lets travelers skip TSA lines
Did anyone read the article? They just want to move Clear somewhere else so the PR isn’t as bad.

> Newman said his bill, SB-1372, doesn't seek to prohibit Clear from operating its own dedicated security lines separate from other passengers.

> "The bill doesn't seek to punish Clear or put it out of business. It wants to create a better traffic flow so customers aren't intersecting with the general public and causing a moment of friction that is so frustrating to the average traveller," he said. "All it does is up the tension in the line."

joshuamarksmith··on Reddit is Fun will shut down on June 30th in response to Reddit API changes
Damage control, maybe too little too late.
joshuamarksmith··on Amazon is said to plan to lay off thousands of employees
This is specifically tech and corporate employees, which is a much smaller pool than the 1.6M you're quoting.

Disclaimer: I work for Amazon (but also haven't stated any opinions)

joshuamarksmith··on Show HN: Redditle.com – For those of us who add 'Reddit' to every Google search
Works in Chrome too.

I use the shortcut "rs" for https://www.google.com/search?q=%s+site:reddit.com for searching reddit, and the shortcut "r" to go directly to the subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/%s

joshuamarksmith··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
Your example is incorrect, actually.

This scenario [1] is a specific instance of using chlorinated lime to clean your hands after dealing with cadavers, which is a totally different scenario. In fact, he apparently references this as an alternative to "normal hand washing". The mid-19th century is not the middle ages, we knew about washing hands.

> Semmelweis's key claim was that physicians contaminated their hands with "cadaveric particles" in the morgue while conducting autopsies. He pointed out that ordinary washings with soap did not remove these particles, because the hands could retain a stench for several days in spite of such washings.

joshuamarksmith··on Show HN: Flashcards to learn AWS skills
I might be too late to not get lost in the comments, but I did notice this flashcard:

> How can you establish a secure connection from your office or on-premises datacenter to AWS?

> Connections to AWS resources are typically encrypted by default (HTTPS, SSH, etc.)

> You can establish a Site-to-Site VPN between your VPC and your on-premises network.

> If you do not want traffic to cross the internet, you may be able to establish a Direct Connect connection, which is a dedicated network connection between your on-premises network and an AWS edge location (from where traffic is routed to your AWS resources using AWS' internal networks).

I want to note that Direct Connect traffic is NOT encrypted by default and this is common misconception, both in real life and in exams. You must combine DX and S2S VPN.

joshuamarksmith··on AirPods Max
Exactly. You can get Sony XM4s for $279 right now. The Airpods Max are nearly double. And yes, that's the sale price; however, Apple products rarely go more than 10% off. Ever. So we can use $500 as a fair comparison, and it's still double after paying proportional taxes.
joshuamarksmith··on Wyze $20 Smart Watch
There's entire companies built around this data. In fact, one of my former employees partnered with one and paid for my FitBit. In the aggregate, FitBit purchases will drive down the probability of healthcare claims, saving the company money overall.
joshuamarksmith··on Ask HN: What are the least competitive consumer and enterprise markets?
I feel that maps of existing least competitive markets are low in competition.
