joshuahaglund··on New research highlights the damage caused by processed food
The hummus comment was to point out that there are foods which people might consider processed, but it doesn't mean it's less healthy than their unprocessed ingredients. Just depends on how it was processed. Maybe I'm misunderstanding "processed" tho

But I guess it's kinda obvious that there are levels of processing and IDK what impossible is doing. But I'm curious.

joshuahaglund··on New research highlights the damage caused by processed food
You basically said "fiber needs are different, google it" so I did, and I don't see anything supporting that statement. You bring up ketosis but I though we're talking about more or less "normal" diets that consume carbs.

I think keto is (in most instances) a dangerous fad diet, but feel free to experiment. Tho I have at various times cut sugar and processed carbohydrates (only eating whole grains) out of my diet and everything was sweeter.

Fasting and keto are not the same thing.

joshuahaglund··on New research highlights the damage caused by processed food
The article barely mentions it but one big loss with processed foods is dietary fiber, which seems to help regulate carbohydrate absorption (iirc).

I scaled the nutrition facts to match serving size grams, all number are grams except cal: calories. I hope formats ok...

                Serving
size cal fat protein carbs fiber
  Impossible 113 240 14 19 9 3
  Beans(pinto) 113 161.90 0.66 9.91 29.74 9.91
  Refried beans 113 85.45 1.92 4.79 12.78 3.51
  Ground Beef 113 308 20 31 0 0
Looks like impossible managed to keep the 3/1 ratio of carbs to fiber that beans have, while increasing the protein ratio and adding fat.

Hummus is technically a processed food. But if it's not too high salt or filled with preservatives, it's not less healthy than eating garbanzo beans with sesame seeds, etc. From my perspective, impossible is a little healthier than a burger (a lot healthier if you count the environment) but it's not a salad.

joshuahaglund··on A massive oil spill in the Pacific Ocean reached the Southern California coast
Just because it happens in nature doesn't mean it's OK for us to make it happen in more places. If you've ever been to the beach around that oil seep you'd know it sucks to get the tar on you or your surfboard. We don't need more.
joshuahaglund··on Pandora papers: biggest leak of offshore data exposes financial secrets of rich
It's really long but did you read even half of it? Because:

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, one of his country’s richest men, rose to power promising to crack down on tax evasion and corruption. In 2011, as he became more involved in politics, Babis told voters that he wanted to create a country “where entrepreneurs will do business and will be happy to pay taxes.”

The leaked records show that, in 2009, Babis injected $22 million into a string of shell companies to buy a sprawling property, known as Chateau Bigaud, in a hilltop village in Mougins, France, near Cannes.

Babis has not disclosed the shell companies and the chateau in the asset declarations he’s required to file as a public official, according to documents obtained by ICIJ’s Czech partner, Investigace.cz. In 2018, a real estate conglomerate indirectly owned by Babis quietly bought the Monaco company that owned the chateau.

Sounds like at the very lest it was unreported. We have half the story, which in a lot of cases sounds like fraud. The other half of the story is in tax documents.

ETA: The other thing is a lot of these people have the power to fix these systems that enable corruption, and like Babis, publicly say they will. But are they going to fix the system if they're using it?

joshuahaglund··on Germany has one of the lowest tuition fees
They averaged the entire us University system, and only covered in state tuition at public university. In-state varies greatly, from $16,070 in NH, $14,440 in PA to $5,220 in WY. Out of state tuition is 2 to 4 times as expensive. I think 6 figure debt is often from private or advanced degrees.

https://www.valuepenguin.com/student-loans/average-cost-of-c...

Edit: I also wonder what the living costs in other countries is. Do students in Germany pay for all their expenses too? Books, housing, food? Because your costs for a year are going to be another 15k or more, unless you can live and eat at home and walk to school.

joshuahaglund··on Video of Tesla FSD almost hitting pedestrian receives DMCA takedown
I keep seeing people incorrectly call less than perfect driving conditions "edge cases." That term refers to rare conditions. Rain, snow, pedestrians, and support pillars are not rare.
joshuahaglund··on Uber must employ its drivers, Dutch court rules
It sounds like you have another source of income. If you were in the middle of a good chapter you could turn down a ride. I don't think you're exactly the kind of driver these companies are looking for, but if they were I think they'd have a hard time finding enough of you.

I feel like being able to monetize your freetime is a luxury a society can't afford when your leisure activity could be someone's job. You could spent time volunteering, like meals on wheels or something. But instead you're driving down the labor rate, as a hobby.

That sounds harsh and I don't want you to feel personally attacked, so I'll just it's cool, no one's perfect. But jobs need to pay live able wages, IMHO.

joshuahaglund··on Polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) as a Way to Increase Food Volume and Satiety
This comment makes no sense, it's like you've never heard of organic farming
joshuahaglund··on Airbnb raises violent crime rates in cities as residents are pushed out
People like Uber because it's cheaper than taxis but I'm hearing complaints that prices are up. Seems the reason it's cheaper than taxis is Uber is subsidizing with investor money and they shifted costs to the drivers, many who are realizing it's not worth it. Seems to me Uber has always been unsustainable (they're billions in the red, spending to capture market share) but they were hoping to have self driving cars to eliminate drivers by now.
joshuahaglund··on Bezos donates $100M each to CNN contributor Van Jones and chef Jose Andres
I just think this money shoulda been paid in taxes so we could collectively solve problems instead of some guy hand picking a couple lottery winners.
joshuahaglund··on I am often asked if I will “return to cryptocurrency”
I know liquor stores with crypto ATMs with displays. If you log into paypal, you can buy crypto. They're absolutely marketing to people with not much money.
joshuahaglund··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
WTF is up with this thread, that a comment like this would generate down votes? And that people would think disinformation is not harmful?
joshuahaglund··on Organic and regenerative agriculture are revitalizing rural Montana economies
I think hackers like understanding complex systems and problem solving within them (or at least trying). The environment and modern agriculture is a complex system and food scarcity is a problem to be solved. And ADHD.

I work with technology but I'm skeptical that we understand some of the complex systems we claim to understand (or just as likely, something about the bottom line for a big corporation means it's hard to get the full story). 20th century agriculture was focused on short term gains, often resulting in profits for a few big businesses, that eventually resulted in big "unforeseen" problems. Like soil depletion, cancers among farm workers, runoff and polluted waterways. Technology caused those problems, so I guess sometimes it's good to be reminded that sometimes older methods can be better than new.

joshuahaglund··on Crypto crash deepens, stocks slip
Please explain how exactly a constrained monetary supply keeps politicians honest? Seems to me that is pretty much entirely dependent on an informed and participatory electorate.

I think a constrained monetary supply just means the politicians we elect have less influence over the economy than the people with the most wealth. In either scenario, there will be untrustworthy politicians who need to be out voted or voted out.

I'll agree with you that the monopolies (or too big to fail whatever) in finance and technology should be broken up. And I hope everyone who is into crypto banks their fiat at a local credit union.

But I think for most people using lightning means getting an account with a wallet provider. Couldn't they suspend your account for violating ToS? I guess some people could setup their own channel but I don't think that's what most people do.

Proof of Stake just means the biggest entities will have control. That doesn't sound stable to me but good luck.

joshuahaglund··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
I guess my point is that with PayPal, as a buyer, the transaction fees are seamlessly included in the price.

With crypto, it depends. Which coin? Which wallet? Which seller or marketplace? I'm curious if you care to share more about your transactions, that cost less using crypto. Now, if you're saying that you bought at $100 and it's at $1000, and you "paid less" that way, that's just this stage of the ponzi scheme's doing, not an inherent feature of the network that lowers costs.

joshuahaglund··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
randomhodler84, have you heard the phrase "last man holding the bag?" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagholder This crypt ponzi scheme turned the natural progression of itself into a meme that reinforces itself. But GME is at $180, so you could be right. Stupidity could yet win and our future could be doomed to feed an ever increasing amount of resources into accounting. I hope it's just mania and we can go back to regular low energy databases to keep track of funds.
joshuahaglund··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
Have you heard of PayPal? Because i buy things internationally and pay with PayPal all the time. If I don't receive the order, I can contest and cancel the charge (sometimes). And there's no transaction fee that I'm aware of.

Do you buy $5 items internationally? Because the bulk of my international orders are low value items. If I have to spend more on a transaction fee than the item costs, I'm not gonna buy the item. Oh, lightning you say? You really think I should trust that more than pay pal?

joshuahaglund··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
I'm personally angry that this whole crypto ponzi scheme has gotten so big. That miners are producing e-Waste is the least of its environmental impact.

The president was censored (for violating TOS) after he called for violence.

I experience linear time, how about you?

joshuahaglund··on Anthony Levandowski Pardoned
Come on, suicide? If you loose your job for saying "this is unethical" do you call that suicide? It's called having a backbone. "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." These GOP folks who stood behind Trump but are now critical choose the side that's winning at the time rather than stand up for what's right.
joshuahaglund··on GitHub reportedly fired a Jewish employee who called Capitol rioters “Nazis”
To the people saying stop using the term Nazi there were people in "camp auschwitz" shirts and "6 million wasn't enough" tattoos (referring to the number of Jewish people killed). There absolutely were Nazis in the streets.

I'm disappointed in github for their actions and in the HN community that I see people defending Nazis.

Also, FWIW, this is what 20,000 American Nazis in Madison Square Garden in 1939 looks like. Nazi, white supremacist, neo-confederate, all the same thing, all in America. Complacency and nit-picking verbiage will only make them stronger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC1MNGFHR58

joshuahaglund··on Tell HN: Aaron Swartz died today, 8 years ago
Deplatforming is when a company kicks someone off its service for violating TOS. Canceling is when a community who previously supported someone sees another side of them and changes its mind. I believe you're conflating the two. But neither is a call to violence. As others have said, stop the false equivalence.
joshuahaglund··on Tell HN: Aaron Swartz died today, 8 years ago
If "the next Bernie" promotes violence then he's not the next Bernie and I won't support him and I don't understand what's so hard to understand about that.

Y'all think "it's both sides" but, in America, this call to violence (straight up armed insurrection) is unique in right wing politics. And if it showed up in the Left I wouldn't tolerate it.

Show me someone on the right who was deplatformed who didn't preach hate.

joshuahaglund··on Tell HN: Aaron Swartz died today, 8 years ago
If they incite violence yeah. Is that confusing?
joshuahaglund··on Tell HN: Aaron Swartz died today, 8 years ago
It is not obvious that having someone publicly call for trial by combat at the capitol increases the probability of that happening, compared to no public proclamation? But what you're saying is that removing said content is going to somehow increase the violent behavior? By what means? Because you followed someone into to a cesspool? Then you were already drinking diluted pollution.

People do not get banned simply for being a member of a political party, people get banned for spreading hate and inciting violence. Maybe you should reconsider who you follow if the people you follow wallow in hate and bigotry?

Why doesn't the party of individual responsibility doesn't seem to understand you can just stop following the hate? Seek out and follow reasonable voices. But I'm afraid the whole appeal is more emotional resonance more than reason.

Tolerating hateful violent rhetoric will not de radicalize anyone.

joshuahaglund··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
I've used a work hat and/or work shoes as a reminder to myself and my roommates that I'm working. Not like a hard hat, just things I wouldn't normally wear, that I wear "at" work.
joshuahaglund··on My thoughts in response to the lawsuit against the Internet Archive
Have you ever borrowed a digital book? It's for a limited period of time usually a couple weeks, in an app of some sort. That's what they did, that's CDL.

They temporarily removed waitlists which did allow more people to borrow a title than they had licenses, as physical libraries closed and as schools tried to get online. It was an unprecedented time. They had the support of major libraries. They stopped early when they got sued.

The lawsuit should be dropped.

joshuahaglund··on My thoughts in response to the lawsuit against the Internet Archive
Using controlled digital lending, yes. Why not? The libraries hold licenses to lend this media in physical format but were temporarily shifting to lending using controlled digital lending.

They didn't just give away unencrypted copies to be pirated. They did what libraries do, lend media.
