joshguthrie··on Higher Order Macros in C++
Anecdote: In BS school, we had 48 hours to write a "C-with-some-kind-of-objects". My code ended up being 75% macros and we got bonus points for abusing the preprocessor.
joshguthrie··on Scott and Scurvy (2010)
>the only professionals who remain ignorant about prior work in their field are software developers

Throwing that much salt will be useful for my journey on the S.S. Reinventing The Wheel, thanks!

joshguthrie··on Magic: The Gathering Is Turing Complete (v5)
Is this from Unhinged?
joshguthrie··on Is there an Internet-of-Things vigilante out there?
Question I got afterwards was: Apart from disabling telnet, what kind of long-term modifications are made to the system?

I don't mind a nice vigilante "malware" that disables out-of-date daemons, but I mind if suddenly it added an opening for something else.

joshguthrie··on Is there an Internet-of-Things vigilante out there?
>Resetting an infected device will remove the Wifatch malware Best. Malware. Ever.
joshguthrie··on FlashAir: Memory Card with Wireless LAN
What is the point?
joshguthrie··on What If You Used iOS 9's Low Power Mode All the Time?
Traveling in Japan over the summer, I bought a powerbank. It was useful because I was moving a lot, taking a lot of pictures with my phone, using it a lot for other stuff without charging it. Plus I always had a 4G modem with me.

However, more than 25% of the Japanese I met were using Powerbanks too. Look around you at a smoking area, in the subway,... and those numbers may confirm themselves.

joshguthrie··on Noteslate
How exactly is this better than http://www.amazon.com/Tomy-Megasketcher-Magnetic-Drawing-Boa... ?
joshguthrie··on A new exploit makes it simple to bypass OS X's security protections
"It's not an exploit, it's a feature."
joshguthrie··on Things I was unprepared for as a lead developer
If my junior intern is being delayed in her work because I can't answer her questions, I'm not her manager, I am the idiot who is delaying our team's output.

She is one meter to my right, unless I tell her "Sorry I'm trying to think of something give me five minutes", I want her and ANYONE who joins my team to ask me any and all questions, otherwise A) I've done a bad job showing my team they can communicate properly with me B) I've done a bad job managing them because I am slowing them down.

joshguthrie··on Things I was unprepared for as a lead developer
Thank you for expressing exactly what's going on in my mind.

I hate being interrupted, we all do, even working as a cashier in McDonalds. But the idea that a special branch of people SHAN'T be interrupted is snowflake treatment.

I already feel privileged over other employees in my company for having flexible workhours (felt sick yesterday evening, sent a text at 1am and got at work around 2pm today despite a production deployment being scheduled for 5pm), now if suddenly MY time is more important than anyone else's, I'm not an engineer, I'm a snowflake in an ivory tower.

joshguthrie··on Show HN: Jerbs – Browse GitHub Jobs on an interactive map
Strange behaviour: Job offers with location "Anywhere" map to my own location.

It was quite surprising to discover I was working at GitHub and we were hiring for five positions.

joshguthrie··on Lisp implementation in sed
I am dreaming of a JavaScript implemented in sed, which itself implements Lisp.
joshguthrie··on Ask HN: Why has nobody built a better Wordpress?
Because all these features come at a price.

If you can see why wordpress is terrible, you don't need it and can easily whip out your own replacement.

If you can't see why it's terrible, then it's the perfect product for you.

joshguthrie··on Cutting Corners or Why Rails May Kill Ruby
refines are coming soon into ruby-core (2.2.0 IIRC).
joshguthrie··on Ask HN: Are there forgotten servers out there?
Same here, found abandoned routers in the ceiling at the school where I was doing junior sysadmin work.

Took us an afternoon trying to find out their origin and make sure they weren't malicious but in the end they were just eating watts.

joshguthrie··on True hardware random number generator for $50
Last I heard, there was a free Quantum Random Number Generator with an API out there: http://photonics.anu.edu.au/qoptics/Research/qrng.php

Shameless self-insert: https://github.com/joshleaves/node-qrand

joshguthrie··on Do you really know why you prefer REST over RPC?
I prefer REST because one way fits all usages:

GET /resources, POST /resources, GET /resources/id, PUT /resources/id, DELETE /resources/id

Five routes for one resource type. If you need more resources, you nest your URIs. Why would you need POST /deleteResource?idRes=id when you can just DELETE /resources/id?

Code reuse wins.

joshguthrie··on Secret Shuts Down
I agree with this sentiment.

4chan's /b/ is seen as "the cesspool" and nobody tries to make it better because nobody wants it to be better. It just needs to be that place where the EMT that spent his day dealing with life and death can relieve his stress and let go of what's plaguing his mind with "lol, tits or gtfo"[1].

Because in the end, it's all a big joke.

1: Can't find back the exact screenshot were a /b/ user was saying this, sorry.

joshguthrie··on Why Some Men Pretend to Work 80-Hour Weeks
Did the switch (and switched companies) the other way around: I've never been happier. My CTO even gave me the day off yesterday to spend time with my girlfriend I hadn't seen in two weeks.
joshguthrie··on Japan maglev train breaks world speed record again
Not marketing, I've seen people being allowed to get on trains while the controllers where whistling for the train's departure.
joshguthrie··on French civil code now on GitHub
Do we even have another recent law that everybody in France remembers?

And seriously, every single new law is pushing somebody's agenda. The author could've chosen the "animals are human being" change and we'd have another you yelling not being fond of developers pushing their love for animals.

joshguthrie··on French civil code now on GitHub
Nice use of git, never thought of that. Who's up for other countries law books?
joshguthrie··on The Recipe for the World's Largest Rails Monolith
Okay, THAT was impressive.
joshguthrie··on That Api – Rails API starter kit that includes devise gem setup
How is this better than using a template?
joshguthrie··on Thrust: Chromium-based cross-platform, cross-language application framework
I'm curious about this. How are native modules compiled if I want to deploy from my architecture X to windows, os x and linux?
joshguthrie··on Thrust: Chromium-based cross-platform, cross-language application framework
I'm supplying a node-webkit app to thousand of clients and I feel you.

We thought "Hey, it runs on everything!" would be nice for our future roadmap...but didn't we say the same about Java?

joshguthrie··on Startup advice: cold recruiting
As a developer, I like the point where the recruiter is not trying to bait us with bullshit ("The Facebook of Uber for Porn"). Any mail containing a "our company does X" gets send to the trash.
joshguthrie··on Why You Should Always Use === and Other Bad Practices
Why you should not use "should" or any other imperative in your HN contributions if you don't want to be downvoted to hell and back.
joshguthrie··on Is the Internet a Mob Without Consequence?
The real issue is not the mob, it's the companies kneeling over to bad PR.

We've already got mobs in our streets fighting for X and Y (I won't go politically into whether the reasons are right or wrong), except governments (mostly) don't care about bad PR from a mob. The real issue is that for any single thing, Twitter mobs can rally and ask for the firing of anybody.

Look at our most recents "mobs": DongleGate, libUvGate,... The common denominator is that all people participating in these lack any empathy to see human beings as anything else than a commodity and don't care about any kind of consequences while companies just fire people because "we have to issue some kind of punishments".

Sure, there have to be consequences for "bad behavior" or anything that hurts the company's public image, but is firing at the first offense really the only way to punish a bad employee?

Well, good job tech scene! We've disrupted the scene and built Witch-Hunt-As-A-Service. Free of charge!
