joshcohen··on The bizarre role reversal of Apple and Microsoft
Thank goodness you shared your opinion.
joshcohen··on Microsoft Shares Soar to Record on Earnings Boost From Cloud
Do you know why share count decreased? I was under the impression that new shares have been continuously issued.
joshcohen··on Cuomo signs bill prohibiting Airbnb listings in NYC
Why is it OK to burden one group of people (visitors) but not another (residents)? There's something missing in your argument.

I'm curious why you desire 12 month leases over, say, 4 month leases. What's the major difference from an owner's perspective?

Indeed!

When I visited NY recently I found that hotel pricing was competitive with AirBnB.

Some people prefer AirBnB so they can feel like they live in the cities they're visiting, this certainly sucks for them.

joshcohen··on Shame on Y Combinator
Why?
joshcohen··on Shame on Y Combinator
One candidate has repeatedly been dishonest and suspected of corruption while in government previously (and honestly, the list goes on and on). If people don't take a stand against this type of thing, it is a tacit acceptance.

No it is not tacit acceptance. People weigh pros and cons of each candidate and make a choice. No donation or endorsement implies 100% allegiance, only an overall preference. I'm sure Thiel thinks Trump is fairly idiotic. "But he's a sexist" doesn't change anything even if it were true.

Anyone is free to shun people for their publicly stated political stance but any particular policies or personal attributes of Trump or anyone are not in a special category that is shun-worthy.

joshcohen··on Logical Induction
Although P_n can't be computed in anything like n steps.
joshcohen··on Logical Induction
I'm not an author but this property with respect to a universal 'semimeasure' holds in the limit as time goes to infinity, as do most stated properties of logical inductors. The fact that they're computable is academic.
joshcohen··on Logical Induction
In this setting we're using discrete probabilities so we don't have to worry:)
joshcohen··on Logical Induction
It's not clear if there are any practical applications to automated theorem proving (and that's not the goal of the work). This is primarily motivated by very "theoretical" decision theory.
joshcohen··on Logical Induction
Solomonoff induction is useful because without it there's no model of induction with infinite computational resources. "Logical induction" is not useful in the same way because without it we already have such a model: simply prove/disprove the propositions.
