joshbaptiste··on Making an app promo video: Lessons learned by an indie dev
Cool commercial.. is this app being marketed to real estate professionals, do it yourself home buyers or handy man types?
joshbaptiste··on Condoms not effective against HPV or herpes
Assuming your partner is also not promiscuous
joshbaptiste··on Ken Thompson on GitHub
Tweet from Brad Fitzpatrick (of memcached fame) on the Golang team: https://twitter.com/bradfitz/status/537699677596966912
joshbaptiste··on Ken Thompson on GitHub
Cool and he actually got "ken" as his username. Github must have been saving that username, unfortunately "https://github.com/rob/" is already taken.
joshbaptiste··on DragonFly BSD 4.0 released
Indeed.. although they are aiming for a production quality platform with the upcoming release of the HAMMER2 filesystem.
joshbaptiste··on DragonFly BSD 4.0 released
Out of the BSDs, I would say DragonFly is the most innovative. Its implementation of virtual kernels, HammerFS, thread scheduling via message passing and it has been rock solid as an NFS file server, serving all my local media to other *nix nodes on my LAN. Wikipedia gives a great rundown on the innovations and why Matt decided to fork.

joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: Can we talk about FreeBSD vs. Linux?
Start watching http://www.bsdnow.tv , great show focusing on the *BSD's.
joshbaptiste··on An Introduction to Servo [video]
Darn wish this was on Youtube, I just love casting the direct stream (not tab) of tech presentations on my 50". The sound is awfully low, will have to download and boost the audio via sox since I'm interested in hearing how Servo performs under Rust at this early stage.
joshbaptiste··on Redis cluster, no longer vaporware
Wonder is Antirez is considering starting a commercial Redis alternative providing commercial support a la Nginx.
joshbaptiste··on Hackers Are Controling 17,000 Apple Computers

joshbaptiste··on Poll: A browser without tabs?
No thanks.. If it's not tabs then it's multiple windows that I have to be "ALT+Tab"ing into constantly.
joshbaptiste··on Show HN: Deebrief, a better way to comment on YouTube videos
Really good, to be honest I really don't see me using a separate website to comment on youtube videos, would be a good product to be brought by Google and integrate natively though.
joshbaptiste··on [Developers] SMSBump – Cloud Messaging API

joshbaptiste··on [dead]
heh.. I chortled, indeed is it only the U.S. that does this free phone lock in contract scheme? I simply buy my phones outright (Nexus 5 atm) and hook it up with an MVNO (Simple Mobile atm) that works with sim cards.
joshbaptiste··on A Google Site Meant to Protect Is Helping Hackers Attack
TLDR - Hackers use Virustotal.com to test and refine their malicious code.
joshbaptiste··on Mosh: A replacement for SSH
Reposts are fine, gets the blood flowing again. I totally forgot about Mosh and decided to watch the awesome presentation on their website, also decided to enable on my tablet via JuiceSSH.
joshbaptiste··on Ftrace: The hidden light switch
Wow great debugging article from the performance guru B.Gregg. I'm also not comfortable tracing kernel functions as of yet and remain in user space so far with Sysdig,strace,ltrace.. but a tool such as perf(1) I definitely need a more practical understanding of.
joshbaptiste··on Firejail – Simple Linux sandbox with seccomp
ah nice, an mbox rival.. http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/mbox/
joshbaptiste··on Body Cameras on Police Can Reduce Use of Force Citizen Complaints
Do officers decide when to turn on/off these cameras? Are the recordings stored on the device itself? I don't see how cameras would help much if both questions are true.
joshbaptiste··on Memfd_create() syscall merged into Linux tree
Blog post on memfd https://dvdhrm.wordpress.com/tag/memfd/
joshbaptiste··on Unikernels: Rise of the Virtual Library Operating System
Some good comments prior of MirageOS https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7726748
joshbaptiste··on How compatible is LibreSSL?
There's a social policy that one must adhere to when interacting with groups within certain "geekdom" domains. I learned it while idling on IRC EFNet in #Linux, #LinuxHelp in the early 2000's. To an outsider it comes off as harsh and dismissive but It really does weed out the random noobs/script kiddies who refuse to read a man page or put any effort into solving a problem themselves. I learned how to exhaust all possible search options before posting and how to formulate a question properly, by providing clear and concise examples of the problem resulting in less followup questions and quick solutions to my issues.
joshbaptiste··on A practical guide to protocol buffers in Go
It's a blog, not a peer reviewed ACM article. I read and learn from others no matter how they decide to express themselves as long as the content is relevant and helpful at solving current or future issues.
joshbaptiste··on How compatible is LibreSSL?
I didn't take the tone as condescending at all. It really was (as I read it) constructive criticism for the portability maintainers.
joshbaptiste··on Gaudi – a simple orchestrator using Docker containers
Should post this as a Show HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/show
joshbaptiste··on High-priced prostitute arrested in death of a Google executive
I don't get it, why would she off one of her money maker clients? I can only speculate that either she is a serial killer and this isn't her first rodeo or she was contracted and the rabbit hole goes a bit deeper.
joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: Finding a job for beginner programmer?
Always Be Coding https://medium.com/@davidbyttow/abc-always-be-coding-d5f8051...
joshbaptiste··on Recovering deleted files using only grep
Yep.. installed Dragonfly last week on my home server, the concept of virtual kernels and Hammerfs was the selling point for me, +1 for you sir.
joshbaptiste··on Jrnl – A simple command line journal application
Creating it in Go would relieve the user of installing and/or compiling any other libs to run the application in Python, a set of static binaries which could be compiled to run on FreeBSD,OSX,Linux,Windows without much effort.
joshbaptiste··on Jrnl – A simple command line journal application
or create a Go version (which may be a nice future side project for me) hmm..
